September 28, 1969, Atlanta: Braves 4, Padres 2 (box score) The Braves jumped out early in this one and then hung on late to complete their sweep of the Padres. Clay Kirby started for San Diego, while Pat Jarvis got the call for the home team. With two out in the first inning, Hank Aaron singled. Rico Carty followed with his 16th homer of the year to make the score 2-0. Atlanta scored again in the third to extend its lead to 3-0. The Padres answered in the fourth when Ollie Brown led off with his 20th home run of the season. San Diego threatened in the seventh, but with two ...

September 21, 1969, San Diego: Braves 8, Padres 2 (box score) The Braves scored twice in the third off Joe Niekro, and that was, effectively, the game. They added five more in the seventh -- the final run coming on Hank Aaron's 43rd home run of the season -- to pad their lead to 7-0. San Diego pushed across a run in the bottom of the seventh. Roberto Pena tripled to lead off the inning. One out later, an Al Ferrara ground out scored Ron Slocum, running for Pena. The Braves and Padres exchanged single runs in the eighth to make the final score 8-2. Three Atlanta batters finished with ...

September 19, 1969, San Diego: Braves 12, Padres 3 (box score) Another day, another blowout. The Padres trailed, 4-2, after an inning, and that was as close as they ever got. The Braves banged out 17 hits and San Diego starter Mike Corkins left after retiring just one of the six batters he faced. Rico Carty and the light-hitting Gil Garrido collected three hits apiece, with Garrido driving in three runs (he finished with 10 RBI all season in 251 PA). Clete Boyer also drove in three runs, while Orlando Cepeda and ex-Padre Tony Gonzalez each added two hits. Heck, even Braves starter Milt Pappas knocked his second homer ...

1969: Niekro Beats Niekro, Padres Win

July 13, 1969, San Diego: Padres 1, Braves 0 (box score) One run. Not a lot of margin for error there. The last time the two Niekro brothers had faced each other, Joe won in relief for the Cubs at Wrigley despite older brother Phil's three-run homer earlier in the contest. This time, the two hooked up as starters, and each put on a terrific performance. The Padres scored the game's only run in the fourth. Nate Colbert led off with a double to left. With two outs, Ivan Murrell singled him home. Atlanta, ...

July 10, 1969, San Diego: Braves 3, Padres 1 (box score) Dave Roberts, making his second big-league start for the Padres, lasted just four batters into this game. Felipe Alou singled, Felix Millan walked, Hank Aaron doubled, Rico Carty walked, and Roberts was yanked. Gary Ross came in and slammed the door, but the Braves' 2-0 lead would prove insurmountable. Atlanta scored its final run in the seventh. With Billy McCool on the mound for the Padres, a single, walk, two sacrifice bunts, and another single put the Braves up, 3-0. San Diego finally got on the scoreboard in the bottom half of the frame courtesy of a rare ...
