September 12, 1969, Los Angeles: Dodgers 5, Padres 3 (box score) San Diego jumped out to an early 2-0 lead against Bill Singer. With one out in the second, Van Kelly drew a walk. Jerry Morales followed with a double to center that scored the Padres' first run. Morales advanced to third on a Ted Sizemore throwing error on the play, then scored on a sacrifice bunt by Chris Cannizzaro. The Dodgers came back with a run of their own in the fourth. Three straight singles off San Diego starter Al Santorini to start the inning made the score 2-1. It could have been worse, but Sizemore bounced ...

September 4, 1969, San Diego: Padres 3, Dodgers 0 (box score) Dick Kelley and Bill Singer squared off in the first of a four-game series at San Diego Stadium. Kelley didn't last long in this one, being lifted for Gary Ross with one on and two out in the third. (Anyone know the story here?) The Padres, meanwhile, took the lead in the bottom half. With one out, Roberto Pena singled to center, as did Ollie Brown. Al Ferrara followed with a double to right-center that scored Pena and Brown, putting San Diego on top, 2-0. Ferrara led off the sixth with a home run to left to ...

September 1, 1969, San Diego: Padres 5, Phillies 2 (box score) After suffering through a miserable 5-22 August, the Padres opened September at home against Philadelphia. Left-hander Grant Jackson started for the visitors and failed to record a single out. Jose Arcia led off the first inning with an infield single. Roberto Pena singled to center, and Ivan Murrell tripled both of them home. A balk by Jackson plated Murrell, making the score 3-0. After Nate Colbert walked, right-hander John Boozer replaced Jackson and retired the Padres without further incident. San Diego added two runs in the fourth. Colbert drew his second walk of the game, and Ed Spiezio ...

August 26, 1969, San Diego: Mets 8, Padres 4 (box score); Mets 3, Padres 0 (box score) Dick Kelley and Tom Seaver squared off in the opener. The Padres took a 2-0 lead in the second on a one-out Nate Colbert walk followed by a two-out Cito Gaston home run. The Mets tied the score in the fourth, on the exact same sequence that plated San Diego's runs. Tommy Agee drew a one-out walk, and Donn Clendenon drilled a two-out homer. In the sixth, with Tommie Sisk now pitching for ...

August 13, 1969, San Diego: Cubs 4, Padres 2 (box score) The Padres scored first in this Wednesday evening affair, but they could have done even more damage. In the second inning, with Bill Hands on the mound for Chicago, Nate Colbert led off with a single to left. Al Ferrara walked and Ivan Murrell reached on an error by third baseman Ron Santo. After Walt Hriniak flied to right for the first out, Tommy Dean was intentionally walked to load the bases. Joe Niekro struck out and Jose Arcia grounded to second to end the inning. San Diego had a 1-0 lead. In the fourth, the Cubs took ...

1969: Padres Lose in Extra Frames at Forbes Field

July 24, 1969, Pittsburgh: Pirates 4, Padres 3 (box score) The Padres started the second half of their inaugural season much as they'd ended the first half: with a loss on the road. Unlike the 10-0 shellacking they'd suffered in Atlanta four days earlier, this game was tight and could have gone either way. San Diego scored in the first off Pirates right-hander Dock Ellis. Jose Arcia and Roberto Pena led off the game with singles, putting runners at the corners with nobody out. After Ollie Brown hit into a fielder's choice that cut down Arcia at the plate, Nate Colbert singled home Pena to give the Padres a ...

July 10, 1969, San Diego: Braves 3, Padres 1 (box score) Dave Roberts, making his second big-league start for the Padres, lasted just four batters into this game. Felipe Alou singled, Felix Millan walked, Hank Aaron doubled, Rico Carty walked, and Roberts was yanked. Gary Ross came in and slammed the door, but the Braves' 2-0 lead would prove insurmountable. Atlanta scored its final run in the seventh. With Billy McCool on the mound for the Padres, a single, walk, two sacrifice bunts, and another single put the Braves up, 3-0. San Diego finally got on the scoreboard in the bottom half of the frame courtesy of a rare ...
