August 31, 1969, San Diego: Padres 5, Expos 2 (box score); Expos 6, Padres 1 (box score) The Rolling Stones' "Honky Tonk Women" had ascended to the top of the pop charts and was enjoying its second week in the #1 spot. The expansion Padres and Expos, meanwhile, continued their descent into realms best left unexplored by professional baseball teams. On a Sunday in San Diego, the two clubs hooked up for a doubleheader in front of 4,782 fans. Dave Roberts faced right-hander Jerry Robertson in the opener. Robertson was a ...

August 29, 1969, San Diego: Padres 3, Expos 0 (box score) Following two straight series sweeps at the hands of the Mets and Phillies, San Diego welcomed the Montreal Expos to town. For all the Padres' faults during their inaugural season (and there were plenty), they never seemed to have trouble beating their fellow expansion team from north of the border. On a Friday at San Diego Stadium, right-hander Al Santorini dominated. He allowed an infield single to journeyman outfielder Ty Cline in the third inning and a single to left off the bat of Coco Laboy with two out in the ninth. Those were the only two hits ...

1969: Wise, Phillies Overpower Padres

August 22, 1969, Philadelphia: Phillies 10, Padres 0 (box score) After winning their first series since the All-Star break in Montreal, the Padres headed to Philadelphia to take on the next worst team in the league. If the Padres were going to gain ground on the Expos, now would be as good a time as any. The Phillies, though, had other ideas. Ten-game winner Rick Wise got the start in the opener against Clay Kirby. Wise was nasty. He went the distance, scattering six singles (three to backup catcher Walt Hriniak, who enjoyed the only three-hit game of his career) and two walks while fanning 10. On the other side, Kirby ...

1969: Niekro Does It All in Extra-Inning Affair at Montreal

August 21, 1969, Montreal: Padres 1, Expos 0 (box score) Joe Niekro, Jerry Robertson, and a whole lot of zeroes. That was the story on a late-August Thursday in Montreal. The Expos had an early opportunity in the second, when Coco Laboy reached third with one out on an error by left fielder Al Ferrara, but couldn't score. In the sixth, they put runners at the corners with two out, but Laboy popped up to catcher Chris Cannizzaro to end the threat. Other than that, Montreal never came close. The Padres, for their part, didn't have much more success against the rookie right-hander Robertson. In the fifth, Cito Gaston reached ...

1969: Padres Lose Slugfest at Jarry Park

August 20, 1969, Montreal: Expos 11, Padres 10 (box score) If you like offense, this was the game for you. Even though the Padres ended up losing, they made a valiant comeback attempt. The Expos jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead in the first on four singles and a walk off San Diego starter Tommie Sisk. The Padres responded with a run of their own in the second, but Montreal scored four more in the bottom half of the inning. The big blow was a Ron Fairly three-run homer off reliever Dave Roberts, who had replaced Sisk after just nine batters. San Diego stormed back in the fourth. With ...

1969: Padres Hold On to Squeak Past Montreal

August 19, 1969, Montreal: Padres 5, Expos 4 (box score) Way back before MLB systematically destroyed its Montreal franchise, when the commissioner wasn't ownership's puppet, there was an impressive demand for the sport in Quebec. How else would you explain 14,250 fans attending a contest between two teams that together had won barely 30% of their games with just over a month remaining in the season? The Padres struck early against right-hander Steve Renko in this one. Ivan Murrell was hit by a pitch to start the second inning. After advancing to second on a Chris Cannizzaro groundout, Murrell moved to third on a Tommy Dean single. One out ...

1969: Padres Falter Late, Drop Series to Expos

June 12, 1969, San Diego: Expos 4, Padres 1 (box score) After splitting the first two games at San Diego Stadium, the Expos and Padres remained deadlocked in a scoreless tie through six innings in the rubber match. Not until the bottom of the fifth had either team put a runner past first base. In that inning, the Padres loaded the bases with two out for Tommy Dean, who grounded out to end the frame. Montreal broke the tie in the seventh. With one out and nobody on, Rusty Staub launched a home run to right off Joe Niekro. The Padres came back with an unearned run the following inning. ...
