Subject: Sample Ducksnorts e-mail newsletter
Greetings from surprisingly cold and rainy San Diego,
Welcome to the new and improved Ducksnorts newsletter, where you’ll get the latest on what’s going on here at the site and then some. But enough about me, let’s get the goods.

HIGHLIGHTS FOR MARCH 13 – 19, 2006
==================================
————————-
Catching Up with Catchers
————————-
On Monday we looked at the Padres catching situation, specifically Mike Piazza, Doug Mirabelli, and prospect George Kottaras. There have been some rumblings that the Red Sox might be interested in reacquiring Mirabelli, but to date it’s been more talk than action. As for Piazza, who am I to argue with his explanation of how to hit a baseball: “Keep it simple. See the pitch, let it unfold, trust your hands.” Sounds like a good plan to me.

Spare Outfielders
—————–
On Tuesday we tried to figure out who might stick with the Padres as the outfield backups. Some of the names might surprise you. Jack Cust? Eric Valent? Meantime, nobody is sure what will happen with prospect Ben Johnson, who seems destined to follow in the footsteps of Xavier Nady as the guy who never really gets a shot.

Replaceability, Contingency, and Get Well Soon
———————————————-
On Wednesday (are you noticing a pattern here?) we discussed reliever Doug Brocail’s recent angioplasty and how his close call served as a reminder that life is a pretty cool thing. His chances of returning as a big-league pitcher, as well as what timetable that might entail, remain unknown. Ducksnorts continues to wish Brocail a full and quick recovery.

World Baseball Classic Recap: Semifinals
—————————————-
Ducksnorts is at the inaugural World Baseball Classic semifinals and finals in San Diego. We’ve got commentary and photos up from Cuba’s 3-1 victory over Dominican Republic on Saturday afternoon, as well as from Japan’s rain-drenched 6-0 win over Korea in the nightcap. For Padres fans an extra treat was getting to see former Friar Akinori Otsuka (who received a warm round of applause during introductions and when he came in from the bullpen) close the latter for Japan.

WHAT’S ON DECK
==============
Ducksnorts will be back out at Petco Park on Monday night for the World Baseball Classic final between Japan and Cuba. Expect plenty of commentary and photos.
Beyond that, we’ll be keeping an eye on the latest developments at spring training (e.g., Adrian Gonzalez vs Walter Young as backup first baseman). I’m also working on an NL West preview with the folks at Baseball Analysts and, of course, the Padres preview at Baseball Think Factory. Both of those should run sometime this week.
Finally, I’m toying with the idea of asking people to submit their projections for Padres players this year, but I don’t know how much interest there would be, so that may or may not happen. Feel free to let me know your thoughts on this (or anything else) at geoff@NOSPAM!ducksnorts.com.
