Analysis of NL West bullpen workload from Buster Olney’s ESPN blog today:
Arizona Diamondbacks
Luis Vizcaino: 26 games, 25.1 innings
On pace for: 83 games, 80 innings
Brandon Lyon: 22 games, 22.2 innings
On pace for: 70 games, 72 innings
Jose Valverde: 21 games, 20 innings
On pace for: 67 games, 64 innings
Jorge Julio: 20 games, 23.1 innings
On pace for: 64 games, 74 innings
Thoughts: Julio was a good addition for the D-Backs, another good arm for what has been a surprisingly good bullpen (until Valverde blew saves in the last week).
Los Angeles Dodgers
Danys Baez: 24 games, 27.1 innings
On pace for: 75 games, 85 innings
Takashi Saito: 24 games, 26 innings
On pace for: 75 games, 81 innings
Tim Hamulack: 21 games, 20 innings
On pace for: 65 games, 62 innings
Thoughts: The return of Eric Gagne should help everybody in the pen and take some pressure off Baez, who warmed up in the seventh inning a couple of days ago.
San Diego Padres
Scott Cassidy: 24 games, 26 innings
On pace for: 75 games, 81 innings
Brian Sweeney: 19 games, 28.2 innings
On pace for: 59 games, 89 innings
Scott Linebrink: 22 games, 24 innings
On pace for: 69 games, 75 innings
Trevor Hoffman: 18 games, 18 innings
On pace for: 56 games, 56 innings
Thoughts: Hoffman has probably lasted this long because of Bruce Bochy’s judicious use of the closer. Bochy disciplined himself in the way he employed Hoffman and has had the same dominant closer for 12 seasons.
Colorado Rockies
Jose Mesa: 28 games, 23.1 innings
On pace for: 87 games, 73 innings
Brian Fuentes: 21 games, 20.2 innings
On pace for: 65 games, 64 innings
Ramon Ramirez: 17 games, 21.2 innings
On pace for: 53 games, 68 innings
Thoughts: Mesa’s innings are a concern, but there is a school of thought in baseball that once you hit a certain age — and Mesa has long since gone past this age, whatever it is — you don’t care about how many appearances you have. You just pitch until you can’t pitch any more. Colorado GM Dan O’Dowd says Fuentes’ emergence has been extremely important, because he’s given the Rockies’ bullpen some structure.
San Francisco Giants
Kevin Correia: 13 games, 26 innings
On pace for: 41 games, 81 innings
Steve Kline: 21 games, 14.1 innings On pace for: 67 games, 46 innings
Thoughts: Early-season injuries to Armando Benitez and Tim Worrell have made the bullpen a merry-go-round of bodies, so no particular reliever has been worked as hard as many of the Giants relievers have been worked under Felipe Alou.

I guess the Nevin trade probably indicates that D.Lee is going to be longer in recovery than they may have let on.
Stauffer has been pitching great in his last 3 starts…candidate for spot start if Peavy’s spot in the rotation. Etherton, Sweeney, Junge, and (god forbid) Cowcat are all also candidates.
… it’s a bit clunky to use the web page … but there are plenty of other former-Padres to vote for: Ben Howard, Jake Gautreau, JJ Furmaniak, Jesse Garcia, Freddy Guzman … *AND* … Tony Gwynn
Jake Peavy is going to miss a start, or at least the team wants him to miss a start. Peavy has been dealing with an injury to his shoulder since September of last year, one that is structurally similar to the injuries hindering Bartolo Colon and Ben Sheets. Peavy is fighting the idea that he shouldn’t be out on the mound, willing to settle for having his start pushed back rather than missed. Peavy admits that his shoulder has been bothering him for the better part of a month. His effectiveness belies the problem, making it hard to say that he’s degrading while pitching. Keeping Peavy healthy is key for the Padres, so expect them to watch him closely, shortening his pitch counts and using off-days to get him extra rest when possible.
I have always disliked Chicago (Cubs) for some reason. Maybe it was Sammy hitting massive shots off us, or one of those over-hyped teams. Then you add in Baker who was at the helm for most of Giants using the Padres as their rag you use to clean up nasty things, hated them more.
Now I feel sorry for them. I fear Nevin is going to be a big bust; not sure what they gave up for him, but his OPS splits:
H: 762; R: 665; .762 in Texas? Yikes. But with those numbers, he could play 3B for us again. Given that, I am glad we are doing playing Chicago this year to avoid some 4 HR day for Nevin.
remember how we caught the Cubs at exactly the right time? Well, it looks like we are going to catch the Pirates at exactly the WRONG time. They were a hapless bunch early in the season and couldnt hit or pitch their way out of a paper bag. Not so recently. Jason Bay is hot, having won two consecutive “players of the week” awards while the Buccos just swept the Brewers by outscoring them 36-8 in the four game series. This is not the time we need Jake to go on the fritz..
Phil Nevin is in the last year of his contract so he will become a free agent in the off season. Would we have any interest in bringing him back on a one year 1-2 million dollar contract? Can he still play 3b or not? hmmmm?
In case there wasn’t any doubt, Cesar Carillo won’t be seen in San Diego anytime soon…
“Carrillo to disabled list
Those anxiously awaiting the Portland debut of Cesar Carrillo (including many of us at pdxbeavers.com) will have to wait a little longer. After being transferred to Portland from AA Mobile May 19, Carrillo has not pitched. The club’s press release announcing the move states that Carrillo is suffering from a strained right forearm flexor.”
Nevin was never and definitely now would not be a viable option at 3B. McAnulty is getting a bit of work down at the corner, but…we need a third baseman.
Best player in the Pads system never to really get a chance?
Jack Cust. OBP approaching .500 (not fluky either, almost 200 PA).
Perhaps Jared Wells should get a shot in Peavy’s spot. Anyone else we know come straight up from AA to the majors, never again to throw a minor league pitch?
Why not just play Bellhorn at third full-time, let Castilla go (really, he’s of no use to the Padres or any other team at all) and bring up Cust to see what he can do? His OBP right now is 466, and he never really got a shot with the Orioles. He would certainly have to be better than Vinny. Hell, Ron Santo currently is better than Vinny.
its going to be a while before anything is done about vinnie.
this mornings u/t had this quote:
The Padres rank 12th of 16 in the NL in scoring, although as they start a seven-game trip that begins tomorrow in Pittsburgh, they rank among the NL’s top four in runs scored on the road. Manager Bruce Bochy predicted better results from third baseman Vinny Castilla, who has one home run and is batting .216 after a 1-for-22 slide.
“We think we spotted something,†said Bochy, referring to a small mechanical glitch that soon could be corrected.
so, we wait an see if Vinnie can improve on his numbers(it wouldnt take much) How long we wait is anybody’s guess.
I’m interested to stir the “Top 10 Feats by a Padres Player†conversation a bit more … on an off-day … so far, ones mentioned that I’ve added to my personal list are …
– Andy Ashby’s 75-pitch CG
– Trevor’s 53-save season
– Vauaghn’s 50-HR season
… with “special mention” to Finley’s HR to kick-start the drive to the 1998 WS …
Remember, I’m sorta fishin’ for one I came across while researching the career of #80 on the Padres Top 100 list … to be published “shortly” over a Friar Faithful …
There is no way we will ever see Nevin back in a Padres uniform. Nevin wasn’t shipped out because of his contract (the same amount is being paid to Chan Ho) he is gone because he was a cancer in the clubhouse. Management’s patience wore thin. I have even heard a lot of rumors that players on the team had enough of his attitude also. His numbers this year are better but look at all the hitters in that line-up to protect him. Not only will Nevin not be playing for the Padres (and let’s just say for a crazy reason he was… Sandy Alderson would never, Never, NEVER let anyone in the organization even think about walking him anywhere near the 3rd base bag!) I would be willing to bet he isn’t in baseball next year. I don’t think Phil’s pride will let him sign a minor league contract and I’m pretty sure that’s all he’ll get. I think it’s funny nobody ever brings up steroids with that guy. He was the freaking hulk for a couple of years and hit like crazy then all of a sudden he gets a lot smaller, stops hitting, and complains about the ballpark for the next year and a half. Basically if you can’t tell I hate that guy and would probably cease breathing if I saw him at 3rd for the pads… Sandy and KT would never let that happen though!
In Jerry Crasnicks chat today at espn.com he mentions the exact same thing about Nevin – that he’s a pain in arse and will be very vocal about not playing with the Cubs. He’ll be in Japan next year or gone for good.
For those that keep track (and, yes I’m one), the Pads’ home Batting average is up to .228.

Etherton’s gone — traded him back to KC earlier this week.
I bet they’re going to bring up Stauffer for the start. He’s been pitching well, 1st round pick, yada yada yada

I wouldn’t mind having nevin come off the bench if they gave him EY type money ($700K-$800K) I dont know how he would be in the club house though.

oh I see, u want an individual’s feat. Lemme think on it and I got a couple..

No Nevin, please. His ship has been sent away to far far away.
