The Padres recently claimed right-hander Josh Banks off waivers from Toronto. I didn’t think much of it at the time, but ESPN’s Keith Law shot me a note saying it was a nice pickup. I asked him to elaborate, and here’s what he said:
FB 90-94, four-seamer, dead straight. Plus splitter. Flashes an average CB but rarely used it, which I think was the TBJ coaches’ dictum. SL is a non-factor. 60 command and 70 control. Nice kid, seemed baseball-smart to me the times I talked to him.
And before you say anything, just remember that Law used to work in the Blue Jays front office. Maybe Banks has a career, maybe he doesn’t. For the price of a waiver claim, what’s the harm in finding out?

Man, every time after the Padres lose I check to see if any of our minor league affiliates won as a small comfort.. well 0-for-everything today. At least Eric Sogard is continuing to mash in Lake Elsinore.
I was busy packing last night (moving) and completely forgot about the game. Kind of weird….Seeing that we lost I’m glad I skipped it.
Anyway, hope we don’t get swept by the snakes. Then it truly would be the low point for the Petco Padres.
I’m getting a bad feeling abaout this season, just like the housing market, rising food costs, gasoline going to quadruple in price by 2012, and my Padres in a recession.

To me, and it hit me like a bolt of lightening around late January (and I commented as such on this blog) , the ‘dumpster diving’ utilized to fill outfield and bench spots was way over the top and in hindsight, embarrassingly inadequate. Coupled with the ridiculous ‘Antonelli’ will get a try in centerfield January experiment (as if this were a solution to the huge hole lefy by Cameron and Bradley departures) , the Padres managent look rather silly right now. Also of concern, is their possible overvaluing and chest thumping regarding the true value of their top prospects (Headley & Antonelli) so as to spin the always evident lack of development of this regime into what appears to be an overnight success story. In fact, albeit only 15% into the season, when you presently look at the farm systems of an Arizona or a Colorado and how a team like the AAA Beavers stack up against AAA Colorado Springs or AAA Salt Lake, we appear to be at least a year or two away, if that.
Prediction : The dumpster diving will continue and the Padres will pick up either Frank Catalanotto or Kevin Mench to patrol left field.
BTW, would Ducksnorters be thumbs up or thumbs down to picking up Coco Crisp for a prospect like Antonelli or Headley.
I honestly believe, if the Pads simply had one more bat in this lineup they would easily have two to three more wins at this point.

I’m all for getting crisp at this point but not at the cost of Headley or Antonelli. Crisp is a good player and if he was the last piece of the puzzle then I think it would be worth giving up one of our top guys to get him but I don’t think adding crisp would turn this team into a playoff contender so why mortgage your future to add a good player who you’ll control for 1 or 2 more years to a team that will still not make the playoffs.
#4@JP: I don’t understand, are you advocating for a bat or Coco Crisp? The two don’t really go together.
#4@JP: Thumbs down. He started hot, but the last two years don’t go away with one good month. Plus, we’re getting below-average production from 5 positions. No way one league-average bat cures that. He’s a complementary piece at best. That’s like paying to have your house repainted when the water heater has flooded your basement.
#4@JP: I doubt the Padres will make a move for a Mench or a Catalonatto. McAnulty is perfectly serviceable in left for the time being and we don’t have to give anything up to run him out there every night.
The Padres could easily have two or three more wins if a couple line drives had fallen for hits, too.
And count me as a no vote on either Headley or Antonelli for Crisp.
