Also, did you realize that Tony Gwynn didn’t wear #19 during his playing days at SDSU? I took a photo of the Aztec Wall of Fame beyond right field that documents this, but it came out blurry. Gwynn wore #28. Who wore #19? That would be Padres manager Bud Black.

Stuff to waste time on while waiting for pitchers & catchers…so why #19? The Padres roster for 1982 shows no #28, so presumably Tony could have had that number if he wanted it. According to this link, he wore #53 in ST in ‘82:

Did he just not really care what number he wore? (gasp)
Why #19?

I’m sorry to say it, but those SDSU uniforms are pretty ugly. Was this a special event or do they wear those for every game?

SDSU literally has about 20 uniform combinations. These weren’t one of the better ones.

I’ve been able to listen to a bit of Oregon St baseball on the radio here yesterday and this morning … vs U of Georgia … I like it when my radio has baseball play-by-play coming out of it …
Hey, here’s a seed I’d like to plant … it occured to me last season, but it didn’t happen … that it’s gonna be special if/when Tony Gwynn Jr steps to the plate in Petco for the first time … and if he makes the team out of spring training (I don’t know how likely/unlikely that is, do you?) then that might happen on May 25th, the first (and only) time the Brewers come to town … I hope it happens …

dprat, I’ve always heard it was Whitey Wietelmann who brought Tony into the clubhouse at Spring Training and gave him #19 the year he was going to break with the club because big league players didn’t wear numbers like 53.

Padres came out on top in my baseball simulation of the NL West. Each pitcher from the NL West faced every other pitcher from the NL West. The simulation measured Pitcher A + Offense A + Bullpen A vs Pitcher B + Offense B + Bullpen B, not just Pitcher A vs Pitcher B. Each simulation was ran 2500 times for a standard error of 0.01 in the winning percentage.

RE 9: Cheers. It’s one of those stories that, even if it isn’t true, should be true. I’ll bet you could ask 100 people at a Padres game these days who Whitey was and 99 of them would have no clue, but for real hardcore, old school fans he is an icon.
