Friday Links (23 Jun 06)

A handful of days each year I am absolutely crazy busy at work. Today is one of those days, so this will be brief:

  • Woody Williams strikes out five as Storm topple Quakes (North County Times). Williams, out since May 12 with an injured left calf, needed 42 pitches to get through 3 innings. He is slated to make a start at Triple-A Portland before rejoining the Padres on July 1.
  • Sale of Beavers complete (MiLB.com). I actually discovered this via 6-4-2. I don’t have much to say about it, but there’s more info over at PDX Beavers.
  • Speaking of PDX Beavers, they also point to a poignant article on minor-leaguer right-hander Dewon Brazelton. Hard not to pull for the kid. There are some intriguing quotes here from Portland pitching coach Gary Lance as well. A good read.
  • Baseball America’s current Prospect Hot Sheet finds Padres catcher Nick Hundley “in the team photo.” Two third basemen that we’ve been talking about lately as potential replacements for Vinny Castilla make the list — Cleveland’s Andy Marte and Washington’s Kory Casto. The latter is starting to intrigue me — he was the Nats’ #5 prospect coming into the season but he is blocked by Ryan Zimmerman. He isn’t super young (24 in Double-A), but what the heck. We’ll have to add him to our wish list.
  • In the latest edition of Ten Things I Didn’t Know Last Week, Dave Studeman examines the most cost-effective bullpens this year. It will come as no surprise to anyone who follows the Padres that they are way up near the top. I expect they were probably up there last season as well.
  • Making It Home (Baseball Crank). The Crank takes a look at which players are best at scoring once they reach base. The top Padre is Josh Barfield — nestled in between Ichiro Suzuki and Randy Winn. Don’t even ask about Mike Piazza.

That’s all for now. Don’t forget about the Baseball Prospectus Pizza Feed at Petco Park on Friday, June 30. I’m planning to be down at The Field beforehand, so maybe a bunch of us can meet up or something. I’ll put out a reminder around the middle of next week.

  1. I’m still continuing to root for Dewon to succeed. We both attended Middle Tennessee State, and he was so dominant in college that I never really understood his fall in professional baseball until I heard the entire story.

Brazelton’s a great kid, and it would be a wonderful story if he could somehow find his way back to the big leagues and be successful.

  2. On Radio this morning, Bochy:

    - Ben Johnson will be starting in LF
    - Doug Brocail has a setback yesterday with a groin pull
    - Woody will be starting in the doubleheader against the Giants.

I wish Dewon the best. He threw a one hitter last week. The Padres sure could use some more pitching.

  3. Im glad that johnson is going to be starting in LF today, im going to the game tonight and would have been pist if EY was playing instead (nothing against EY is just johnson is more exciting) I just hope Greene, Barfield and Gonzalez are all playing tonight.

  4. GY – I’ll be at the Feed … and will plan to join you at The Field … I might even try to bum a ride from you (I’ll be staying in Kearny Mesa while I’m down there) … I talked with PeterF earlier this week (ask him about his “brush with fame” next time you talk to him :-) ) and it sounds like he won’t be able to make to this one …

  5. Ouch, something happened to Dewon last night … here’s what the game summary said …

The Beavers used seven relievers after a back injury knocked out starter Dewon Brazelton six pitches into the first inning.

  6. Matt Antonelli went 2-for-4 plus a walk and 2 SBs yesterday as Eugene bump’d their record to 4-0 to start their short-season … I find it odd, however, that Antonello DH’d … the guy who play’d 3B is David Freese and he’s started the season going 6-for-12 (.500/.571/.833) (but according to the roster, he’s 23-years-old = 1-2 years older than the typical players at short-season-A).

  7. Matt Bush is back at SS for Ft Wayne … http://tinyurl.com/rrpke

  8. …. and he went 0-2 with a SO. He is in midseason form.

  9. That Bush story doesn’t give me a warm feeling. Maybe he sounded a lot more dedicated and driven but they didn’t use those quotes. As it is he comes off like the same arrogant kid who walked out of Tony Gwynn’s hitting camp because big-leaguers were teasing him.

  10. Yeah but you got to admit that Jered Weaver would have been a horrible choice as well I mean come on a 1.37 ERA would not be worth the extra mil the padres would have needed to pay him (I’m being sarcastic if you couldn’t tell).

There’s no one to blame except Mr Moores. Great job buddy!

  11. At Portland tonight, J. Wells with an *aweful* start (7 BBs in 4.1 IP) … McAnulty back at 1B … HR by Sledge … http://tinyurl.com/ht2dk

  12. Kyler Burke is playing pro ball … for the AZL Padres … and has his first pro hit … http://tinyurl.com/rwbay

  13. Ben Johnson’s batting in the #2 spot … 3 K’s tonight … but does have an assist from LF …

  14. Jake lookin’ good on paper … thru 8 …

    Pitches-strikes – G Meche 108-60; E Fruto 15-10; J Peavy 113-79.

    Ground balls-fly balls – G Meche 4-7; E Fruto 0-2; J Peavy 3-11.

    Batters faced – G Meche 23; E Fruto 4; J Peavy 29.

    … 6 hits + 0 walks + 9 K’s + 1 ER … 1-1 vs M’s …

  15. DavidB posted this yesterday at pdxbeavers.com …

    Sean Burroughs – 3B – Devil Rays

Devil Rays designated third baseman Sean Burroughs for assignment.

Burroughs is making $1.5 million this season and has been terrible in Triple-A. There’s no way he’s going to be claimed. Jun. 21 – 10:49 pm et

(His numbers at Durham…221, .258, .257…a lower slg pct than on base pct!)

… OUCH! … but I’m sure *none* of us are surprised.

  16. Wow, Barry steals second then gets driven in on a single to put the Giants up 3-2 vs A’s … http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/boxscore?gid=260623126 … so does that make Jason Kendall the worst catcher in MLB?

  17. Giles up … bases loaded … 1 out … bottom of 10th …

  18. Bingo!

    B. Giles singled to center, R. Bowen scored

    Padres win 2-1 … Linebrink gets the W … a good night @ Petco!

  19. Kory Casto for the padres 3b!!! Hes hittin over 300 with 12 bombs!!
