Cautionary tale from La Casa de Joven…
Wife: Get a haircut, you look like Leif Garrett.
Me (busting out some crazy old school moves): Hey babe, I was made for dancing.
Long, awkward silence.
Really. Long. Really. Awkward.
Silence.
Wife: Get a haircut.
Anyway, some of these links are kind of old, but not as old as Leif Garrett. They’re still worth checking out.
More Cameron-for-Nady Reaction
- Cameron for Nady: Class on the Cheap (Catbird in the Nosebleed Seats). Jeff Kallman expresses doubts about Xavier Nady as an everyday player and shares a nice Mike Cameron story.
- Cameron Yards (Mets Walkoffs and Other Minutae). Cameron is one of only three Mets to have back-to-back walkoff hits.
- Padres end center-fielder search with Cameron (Baseball America). Jim Callis gives his take on the deal.
- In the latest Cooperstown Confidential, Bruce Markusen offers his thoughts on the trade as well as where some of the Padres free agents might land.
King of the Hill
- Padres get Hill as third-base insurance (Baseball America). The ever-popular PTBNL is headed to the Pirates in return for yet another third baseman. Denis Savage at Scout.com speculates as to the identity of the PTBNL.
- Padres get third baseman in trade with Pirates (U-T). Of Hill, Kevin Towers says, “We think he has tremendous upside.” Also, more non-updates on the potential David Wells deal.
Whatever
- Grading the NL Starting Pitchers (Win Shares) (Beyond the Box Score). Just how bad was the Padres starting pitching in 2005? Let’s just say they should be thankful they play in the same league as the Cincinnati Reds.
- An Interview with Blue Jay Scout Kimball Crossley (Batter’s Box). Crossley spoke at the AFL symposium I attended earlier this month. A former sports journalist with an understanding of sabermetric principles, Crossley has taken the road less traveled in becoming a scout.
- Padres’ Prospect Journal: Sean Thompson (Scout.com). Left-hander Thompson talks about Thanksgiving at home in Tennessee.
- Padres Prospect Interview: Justin Leone (Scout.com). Vinny Castilla isn’t the only third baseman the Friars have picked up this winter. He’s just the oldest.
- Report from the Rose City (Scout.com). John Conniff interviews Jonathan, of PDXBeavers.com fame. Get the latest on the kids just a step away from the Show.
- Friars Roast (Baseball Analysts). Rich Lederer makes the case for the Padres re-signing Brian Giles.
- Blogger Profile: David Pinto (BaseBlogging). The blog is new, the blogger is not. Bill Ferris, of the Detroit Tigers Weblog, has started up BaseBlogging “to be a resource for baseball bloggers (and sports bloggers in general).” He starts off with a bang, interviewing the man behind Baseball Musings.
- Speaking of David Pinto, thanks to him I now know that Chan Ho Park is getting married in Hawai’i
- Ed Barnes and Brian Wilmer talk with Padres TV broadcaster Mark Grant in the July 21 edition of The Writers Radio. In addition to discussing the Padres’ off-season trades and free agent possibilities, Mud gets in some classic digs on broadcast partner Matt Vasgersian. All in good fun, of course.
Also, we’re still talking about Padres left fielders in 2005 and how the silly market for relievers could impact the Padres in their efforts to re-sign Trevor Hoffman. As always, enjoy!
According to KGTV, Padres re-signed Gilly.
Leitner is saying on 1090 that the Padres are about to announce a three-year deal with Giles.
Keep your fingers crossed.
Confirming that teddy just announced the Padres signed Giles. Very cool.
Go Padres!
Now if we can sign Hoffy, we’ll be set, no!
But teddy said Giles wouldplay left. Who would play right, assuming Cameron is in center?
Woo-hoo! I assume this means Johnson will be in RF (better arm than Giles), with Roberts as 4th OF or to Boston.
What a beautiful thing to open the web up to…
As for Hoffy, NO WAY! Not at what he’s asking…
As Paul R. and I were talking about yesterday, $5m per for 2? Yes. 6…? Ehhh, 7…? No…
Gilly, Cameron, Johnson is a solid outfield.
“Solid” is an understatement.
Richard are you RBW…
That’s great news! I was hearing that Toronto was offering in the range of 4 yrs, 50 million.
Then again, I could not picture Giles playing in Toronto. St Louis? Absolutely. Atlanta? You bet. But Toronto? Not so much.
Don’t know if everyone hear reads the Gaslamp blog, but there was a great link there. A NY Newsday story about the Yankees feeling like they were “used” by Giles to drive up his price. Puhleeeeze.
It’s a very humorous read.
I bet Giles is going to be psyched to play next to Cameron.
This is great, b/c it means that Cameron can hit 5th or 6th, right? Wait, maybe not . . .
Loretta
Greene
Giles
Klesko
Cameron
Castilla
Johnson
Olivo
Cameron probably bats cleanup here. Maybe you would flip Johnson and Olivo. I don’t think Kahlil’s a great fit for the two-hole, but I can’t think of anyone better.
Note: I’m projecting that Dave Roberts is gone for the above lineup.
Klesko may find himself on the bench. I just heard that the Padres may package Aki & Eaton to Texas for Mench, Laird, & Nix
Mench at 1B?
I’m not keen on shipping Aki, but I like getting Laird & Mench.
SS Greene
2B Loretta
LF Giles
CF Cameron
3B Castilla
1B Klesko
RF Johnson
C Olivo
I REALLY don’t expect Klesko to our 1B all season. We’ll end up eating the contract and finding a better bat.

Finally a link.
I don’t mind shipping Aki. He experienced a significant dropoff in performance last year (ERA+ of 230 in 2004 to 107 in 2005), which seems a bit low but closer to what I’d expect from him. He is cheap, but isn’t there only one year left on his contract? If all we have to give up is Eaton (whose career ERA+ is worse than Lawrence’s), and we get Mench, Laird, and Nix, we’re doing pretty well for ourselves. Besides, if there is one thing Towers can do, it is hunt down undervalued relief pitching. What would our line-up look like if that trade went through?
Yeah, Peter. It’s me.
