Let’s take a quick look at how BA’s top 30 prospects are doing so far. Stats are from Baseball America and are through games of Apr. 24. Thanks also to LynchMob for providing periodic updates in the comments to various posts early this season.

Michael Johnson is fascinating. He’s got 67 plate appearances so far; 35 times he’s walked, struck out, or hit the ball out of the park. Anybody know where Billy Killian is? I can’t seem to find him on any rosters.

I’d still like to see Tim Stauffer get half a season under his belt at Triple-A, but if he keeps pitching like this and nobody steps up at #5 for the big club, it’s going to be difficult to keep him at Portland.
There are good BB:AB ratios from Barfield, Kottaras, McAnulty, Knott, and both Johnsons.
Only Bush and Cruz have decent SO:AB ratios and Bush is borderline.
Only Knott and M. Johnson have good BB:SO ratios.
Knott, Ramirez and both Johnsons have strong XBH:H ratios.

A Corey Smith sighting in yesterday’s BA Daily Dish …
Could this be a sign of things to come for Padres third baseman Corey Smith? Or just another hot start followed by his long history of inconsistency? Smith, a first-round pick of the Indians in 2001 out of Piscataway (N.J.) High, always seems to get out of the gate strong, but then flounders with prolonged droughts at the plate with errors mounting as the offense struggles through June and July. Traded for Padres’ first rounder in 2001, Jake Gautreau, Smith is hitting .324/.377/.507 with two homers and six RBIs in 71 at-bats overall. He’s committed four errors in 17 games.
