First off, I’d like to thank one of my faithful readers for pointing out an error I made in yesterday’s entry. Derrek Lee did, in fact, play at Rancho Cucamonga during his Cal League tenure, not at Elsinore as I stated. I was working from two different sources, one of which didn’t have the team name listed. Apologies for not catching that earlier.
Padres were off yesterday, start their series against the Giants tonight at the Q. Bullet points today.
- Young Barfield, SS Greene top MVP prospects (U-T). Speaking of Josh Barfield:
“He was the best-fielding second baseman in the Cal League at 20 years old,” said Tye Waller, the Padres’ director of player development.
“I know because of his throwing motion, he’s a little long, a lot of people have concerns about his ability to play second base,” Waller said. “I’ve got to be the patient guy. With the improvement he’s made, I’m not convinced he cannot be a second baseman. I think he can fix that glitch.”
- While on rehab assignments, Padres’ major leaguers become goodwill ambassadors to team’s farmhands (U-T). A nice "feel-good" story.
- Padres could use another boost (Padres.com). Mike Scarr answers reader questions about the catching situation and other possible areas to be addressed this winter.
I’m tired, there’s nothing much happening right now. We’ll get back to our insanely detailed look at Barfield real soon. Meantime, let’s see if we can win a few against Barry Bonds and the crew from San Francisco…
