The Shape of Things to Come

Wednesday, May 7, 2008
by Geoff Young
Top of the ninth, two on, one out. Adrian Gonzalez steps to the plate. Braves manager Bobby Cox summons ex-Padre Royce Ring, who promptly hangs a breaking ball. Gonzalez swats it high and deep down the right-field line. He, catcher Brian McCann, and plate umpire Wally Bell all watch as it sails into the Atlanta night... just foul for strike one. Ring proceeds to fan Gonzalez. After a pitching change, Kevin Kouzmanoff lofts a harmless fly ball to center, into the waiting glove of another ex-Padre, Mark Kotsay. Game over. The Padres lose again. That's the season in a nutshell so far. The Padres play poorly, and then, when they get opportunity, it fizzles... or misses by a few feet, whatever. I'm not prepared to ...

Padres Farm Report (8 Apr 08)

Tuesday, April 8, 2008
by Geoff Young
Tom Krasovic at the U-T reports that Michael Barrett has been placed on the 15-day disabled list (h/t Baseball in Fort Wayne) due to a "strained throwing elbow" suffered during Monday afternoon's 8-4 win over the Giants. Much is unknown at this point, but it doesn't sound good. Meanwhile, Colt Morton will come up from Double-A San Antonio to replace Barrett on the big-league roster. Josh Bard is expected to see most of the playing time at catcher in Barrett's absence. Triple-A -- Portland 9, Sacramento 1 Matt Antonelli: 0-for-3, 2 BB Craig Stansberry (3B): 2-for-4, 2 2B, BB Chase Headley (LF): ...

Random Roster Notes

Tuesday, March 18, 2008
by Geoff Young
Brian Giles saw his first action this spring on Monday. He went 0-for-2 against the Diamondbacks in Tucscon, but who cares? The important thing is, he was in the lineup and able to play right field. Quoth Giles: This was a pretty good test. I know it was only three innings, but the conditions weren't that good out there. It's a little wet in the outfield, and it's windy and cold. Meanwhile, Rule V draftee Callix Crabbe is pushing hard to make the Padres' Opening Day roster. Batting eighth and starting at third base on Monday, Crabbe singled twice and doubled in three trips to the plate. He's hitting .415 this spring, which doesn't tell us as much as his career .369 OBP ...

Prior Returns Home to San Diego

Thursday, December 27, 2007
by Geoff Young
The Padres have signed right-hander Mark Prior to a 1-year deal worth a guaranteed $1 million plus incentives that vary depending on whom you ask. ESPN's Buster Olney reports that the total package could be worth "over $3 million", while Dan Hayes at the North County Times places the high end at $5.5 million. Quoth GM Kevin Towers: Mark Prior is a competitor and is working hard to regain the form that made him one of the great young pitchers in the game. The good news is that Prior is 27 years old and has name recognition. The bad news ...

Padres Lose Bradley to Rangers

Sunday, December 9, 2007
by Geoff Young
Milton Bradley is gone. On Thursday, the Padres were optimistic that they'd retain his services, but now it appears that the Texas Rangers have swooped in and grabbed him. Because the Padres didn't offer Bradley arbitration, they won't receive a compensatory draft pick. (We didn't re-sign Bradley, and all we got was this lousy T-shirt.) Congrats to the Rangers, who have made the bargain signing of the winter. Bradley comes with considerable baggage, but he is a difference maker in the lineup, the likes of which the Padres hadn't seen since the days of Ken Caminiti, Tony Gwynn, and Greg Vaughn in '96, '97, and '98, respectively. Here's hoping for better news on the Kosuke Fukudome ...

Wolf, Peavy, and Winter Leagues

Monday, December 3, 2007
by Geoff Young
I normally don't like to report on stuff that hasn't quite happened yet, but there isn't much else going on right now, and these two items are potentially important pieces to the puzzle for 2008 and beyond. Randy Wolf Signing First up, the Padres are about to sign left-hander Randy Wolf, who pitched for the Dodgers in 2007 when he wasn't on the disabled list. Wolf has missed huge chunks of time over each of the past four seasons and is coming off August shoulder surgery, so it's hard to get a good feel for what he's capable of these days. That said, he strikes me as a reasonable gamble. Wolf is only 31 years old and provided decent (97 ERA+) production for the Dodgers over ...
