Hayhurst Takes Off, Eh?

Tuesday, October 7, 2008

Right-hander Dirk Hayhurst has been claimed off waivers by the Toronto Blue Jays. Dirk was gracious enough to chat with us not long ago. Although his Padre career lasted just 16 2/3 innings, it got his foot in the proverbial door. Here's wishing Dirk all the best in Toronto (one of my favorite cities) as he continues to pursue his baseball dreams. Also, Josh Bard and Shawn "What Am I Even Doing on This Team?" Estes have filed for free agency. Bard and Estes spent much of 2008 on the disabled list. Despite his struggles this year, Bard ends his Padre career with some solid numbers: .282/.358/.412 in 268 games. Bard turns ...

One Less Reason

As you are no doubt aware by now, the Padres have traded Greg Maddux to the Dodgers for two minor-league players to be named later or cash. According to Tom Krasovic at the U-T, "By Oct. 15, the Padres will choose two Dodgers minor leaguers from a list of five already agreed upon by the two clubs." Cash apparently is an option that "would come into play only if injuries weaken the identified trade list." Thoughts? Yeah, I have a few... I'm thrilled for Maddux. He's a class act who has ...

Padres Farm Report: Spotlight on San Antonio

I once caught a game at San Antonio's Wolff Stadium, back when the Missions were a Mariners affiliate. It's a nice ballpark in a nice town -- definitely on my short list of places to return to one of these years, especially now that the Padres have their Double-A team there... San Antonio Missions in a Box: Record: 63-56 Runs Scored: 557 Runs Allowed: 479 BA/OBP/SLG: .265/.349/.392 (Texas League: .269/.341/.410) ERA: 3.46 (TL: 4.33) DER: .656 (TL: .647) Source: Baseball-Reference. This is a good ballclub with some solid young talent. The pitching has been superb (San Antonio leads the league in ERA by a healthy margin -- the second place team is closer to last than first), although we need to attach a ...

There Goes a Really Slow Man

The Padres have dealt first baseman Tony Clark to Arizona for minor-league right-hander Evan Scribner. That's two trades between the teams in the past 12 months after a decade of nothing, in case you're wondering. Most fans in San Diego will remember Clark for his dramatic homer against the Mets' Billy Wagner on June 8, which culminated a season-high five-game winning streak for the Pads. I'll remember Clark for talking about his kid's soccer game during batting practice back in spring training. That and his being lifted for some ...

IGD: Padres vs Mariners (28 Jun 08)

Padres (32-49) vs M's (29-50) Cha Seung Baek vs Carlos Silva 7:05 p.m. PT Channel 4SD DIRECTV: 741 AM 1090, FM 105.7, XM 183 MLB, B-R The Padres have re-signed Brett Tomko, whose sizable contribution to 2007's collapse often gets overlooked by folks more interested in placing all the blame on Trevor Hoffman. Why was Tomko available, you ask? Because the Kansas City Royals had no use for him. If that isn't a ringing endorsement for any pitcher's services, then I ...

Shadow Puppets

For those of you who might have "missed" Monday night's game, here is a quick recap: The Cardinals scored their first runs of the game on a fly ball to deep left that Scott Hairston dropped into the stands for a two-run homer. They scored their next run on a bases-loaded HBP to Yadier Molina -- yes, that Yadier Molina. They scored their next run on a homer by Cesar Izturis -- yes, that Cesar Izturis. Then Albert Pujols homered, which is fine because, well, he's Albert Pujols and that's what he does. Then Todd Wellemeyer drove in a run -- yes, that Todd -- wait, who the heck is Todd Wellemeyer? The game ended. I see the white flag. I'm not prepared to acknowledge it just yet, but ...

Padres Release Edmonds, Shuffle Deck Chairs

So much for Jim Edmonds. Ducksnorts readers projected him to hit .255/.338/.418, with the most pessimistic of us pegging his OPS at a limp 645. Sadly, the former All-Star didn't even come close to those meager numbers, finishing his Padres career at .178/.265/.233 in 103 plate appearances and, more importantly, looking lost in center field. Edmonds has been released, and his spot on the roster taken by Jody Gerut, who presumably will see most of the action in center field. This is a gutsy move considering that Gerut has 26 big-league games under his belt ...
