Reader LynchMob sends us the following:
I’m not an Oscar Salazar fan… can you help me understand how/why he’s going to make the Opening Day roster?
He seems perhaps a good study on the concept of “Replacement Level” players… he seems like he’s got to be below-replacement-level… but if that were true, then the Padres could (and [...]

The Padres have signed veteran catcher Yorvit Torrealba to a 1-year, $1.25 million deal, with a $3.5 million mutual option for 2011. The deal was agreed upon last Friday and made official on Tuesday.
Things to know about Torrealba:
He hit .258/.316/.394 over the past four seasons despite getting to play half his games at Coors Field

The Padres have signed veteran right-hander Jon Garland to round out the 2010 rotation. The deal is $4.7 million this year, plus a mutual option for $6.75 million in 2011.
Excluding 2005, when he masqueraded as a front-line pitcher, Garland has been a league-average innings eater throughout his career. He’s filled that role for a long [...]

I watched a replay of the ‘98 NL West clincher Tuesday night on Channel 4. Mel Proctor and Rick Sutcliffe called the game (with Mark Grant handling the John Weisbarth “roving reporter” role), which made me realize how very dearly I will miss Matt Vasgersian this year.
The fun part of that game, of course, was [...]

Right-hander Dirk Hayhurst has been claimed off waivers by the Toronto Blue Jays. Dirk was gracious enough to chat with us not long ago. Although his Padre career lasted just 16 2/3 innings, it got his foot in the proverbial door. Here’s wishing Dirk all the best in Toronto (one of my favorite cities) as [...]

As you are no doubt aware by now, the Padres have traded Greg Maddux to the Dodgers for two minor-league players to be named later or cash. According to Tom Krasovic at the U-T, “By Oct. 15, the Padres will choose two Dodgers minor leaguers from a list of five already agreed upon by the [...]

I once caught a game at San Antonio’s Wolff Stadium, back when the Missions were a Mariners affiliate. It’s a nice ballpark in a nice town — definitely on my short list of places to return to one of these years, especially now that the Padres have their Double-A team there…
San Antonio Missions in a [...]

The Padres have dealt first baseman Tony Clark to Arizona for minor-league right-hander Evan Scribner. That’s two trades between the teams in the past 12 months after a decade of nothing, in case you’re wondering.
Most fans in San Diego will remember Clark for his dramatic homer against the Mets’ Billy Wagner on June 8, which [...]

The Padres have re-signed Brett Tomko, whose sizable contribution to 2007’s collapse often gets overlooked by folks more interested in placing all the blame on Trevor Hoffman. Why was Tomko available, you ask? Because the Kansas [...]

Let me just say up front that I’m a fan of guys who get the most of our their ability. If you aren’t gifted with overwhelming tools and still find a way to succeed, unless you’re a complete jerk, I’m behind you.
With that disclaimer out of the way, it should come as no surprise that [...]
