Blast from the Past: Old Free Agents, Ugly Drafts, and Great Albums

Not much of a theme today. Just... whatever... Remember when we used to lust after Marcus Giles? This was in 2002 -- years before he actually arrived and demonstrated an alarming inability to hit baseballs. We kinda had a thing for Jose Vidro and Bobby Hill back then, too. Don't ask. On the bright side, Royce Clayton signed with Milwaukee, leaving the Padres with their fallback option of... Mark Loretta. That same year, we were underwhelmed by the Padres off-season moves, and who can blame us? The big free-agent signings were 39-year-old outfielder Brady Anderson, injured right-handers Francisco Cordova and Jaret Wright, and 46-year-old left-hander Jesse Orosco. I think all of us were expecting big things from the '03 team after those moves. Could you ...

Me, the Highway, and Life

Okay, here's the deal. I'm driving up to Oregon this week to visit family and catch a couple of minor-league games. I don't know what my availability will be like while I'm off yonder, so posting will be real light this week. I will try to pop in every now and then with reports, pix, and/or videos from the road, but I can't make any promises. At the very least, we'll have the IGDs up and running every day -- assuming anyone is still interested in talking about the games at this point. ;-) When I return to San Diego, it will be to a full-time office gig. Yeah, it's about the money. My family and I miss it. Also, if I've learned anything from writing ...

You Read It, You Name It

I enjoyed my day off so much, I believe I'll take another. The agenda is roughly the same: Drink coffee Play with dogs Watch Stargate SG-1 Play Mob Wars Read Lillian Ross' Reporting Back (where I learned, among other things, that the great Hungarian composer Bela Bartok once wrote a piece for Benny Goodman; I'll need to get my hands on a copy of that) Pass out on couch Wash, rinse, repeat Oh, and somewhere in there I have to write an article... Do I know how to party, or what? Anyway, I'll have the IGD up around 6 p.m. or so. Twins are in town for three. It'll be a hoot...

IGD: Padres vs Tigers (20 Jun 08)

Padres (31-43) vs Tigers (34-38) Greg Maddux vs Eddie Bonine 7:05 p.m. PT Channel 4SD AM 1090, FM 105.7, XM 189 MLB, B-R October 10, 1984: The Padres played one of the greatest games -- if not the greatest game -- in franchise history. They beat the Tigers, 5-3, at what was then known as Jack Murphy Stadium. It's the only World Series game they've ever won, with Andy Hawkins picking up the victory, Craig Lefferts earning the save, and Kurt Bevacqua dealing the death blow in the form of ...

First Padre Blogger Summit

Well, "summit" might be a slight exaggeration, although we were sitting pretty high up in the right-field bleachers. Regardless, on Thursday, a few of us got together for drinks and a ballgame. Attendees included Jason from Padres Revolution (aka sdpadrefan.com), Rich from San Diego Spotlight, Melvin Nieves from Sacrifice Bunt, and yours truly. We started off at The Field for boxty and beer (Boddington's on tap, mmm...), then wandered over to the park just in time to hear the reaction to Ken Griffey Jr.'s 598th career home run. We sat in Section 233, which is actually part of Riverside County, and had a ...

Santana’s Banana Bandana

When I was about 20, some friends and I drove out to Vegas to see the Grateful Dead. It was their first time playing Vegas in many years, and I'd never seen them live. I'm not a Deadhead by any stretch, but it sounded like an adventure, so I went. We took a '69 Volkswagen bus -- I know it sounds cliche, but that was the guy's ride. And yeah, we had to push-start it, like in Little Miss Sunshine. There were maybe six or seven of us. The plan was to find the cheapest place in Vegas and rent a room for two; then everyone else would pile in and take various spots on the floor. It was all very Marx Brothers. Except for the tie-dyed ...

I Brake for Money

Monday, April 21, 2008
by Geoff Young
Posting will be light this week, as I've got to overhaul a client web site. It's a small site, but they need a quick turnaround. More importantly, the gig pays actual money (for the actual mortgage on my actual house), which comes in handy when your primary source of income is a book that nobody buys. The farm reports and IGDs will run every day, but we'll be doing open threads most of the rest of the time. I'll try to come up with halfway decent prompts that you can discuss or ignore. Meanwhile, I've got some other cool stuff going on behind the scenes. I can't say anything about those just yet, but expect to hear more in the coming weeks. You'll know when they ...
