Mailbag: Special Vinny Edition

The Adam Eaton to Texas rumors continue to float around but as yet, nothing has actually happened. Meantime, we've gotten some real good responses on the Brian Lawrence - Vinny Castilla trade so I thought I'd run a few letters, comments, and the like. Enjoy... From the venerable and ubiquitous Anonymous: I heard from a reliable (and completely trusted) source that the Padres were minutes away from releasing B-Law last year (right before Pedro Astacio went on the DL -- when that ...

Friday was supposed to be mailbag day, but somebody was pretty bummed and beat after Thursday night's debacle against the Devil Rays. The Padres are not playing inspired or intelligent baseball right now, and I'm having trouble writing inspired or intelligent analysis. This is the first real bad streak they've had all year and it is not at all fun to watch. Brian Lawrence pitched a beautiful game yesterday and got no support. He gave up a run on a single after a pop up that three Padres stood around and watched drop for a double in the second, then served up a homer to Orlando Hudson (incidentally, why is it that the likes of Hudson, Frank Menechino, and Gregg Zaun have no trouble hitting the ...

I don't have a stupid little story to lead in with today, so let's get right to the letters. Seems we touched a few nerves in the May 24 entry. This makes us very happy. From Jeff #287: Damn, Geoff. You hit the nail on the head with every one of your points. I couldn't agree more with [Kerry] Robinson, Tank [Dennis Tankersley], and the frustration. This is a takeable division, but the Padres will have to be smart to take it. I still expect [Dodgers' GM Paul] DePodesta to go get himself some middle infield talent that will make the Dodgers a force. And that aside, even if we can just fumble along, and take the division without much thinking involved from management, ...

I get home just in time to catch the ninth inning of East Coast games, so I can't offer much commentary on last night's contest. But I can say that seven innings of shutout ball after two straight losses is exactly what a #1 pitcher should give. Like the six punchouts. Today is the first day I'm really happy the Padres signed David Wells. Moving along, today's letter comes from frequent contributor Anthony Trifiletti: Nice summary of the Padres in April. [Khalil] Greene is becoming one of my favorite players to watch; he's not flashy in an Ozzie Smith way but he gets to a lot of balls and like you say, he has a great approach at the plate. It's not often that you can ...

Hippies have bad acid flashbacks. Padre fans have bad catcher flashbacks. I mistakenly referred to Ramon Hernandez as Carlos Hernandez yesterday. Hope I didn't freak anybody out with that one. Thanks to a couple of Jeffs for letting me know. Anyway, today's letter comes from Bill Robens, who writes, in response to the March 9 entry: I've been going through the new Prospectus and I too have found something to get irritated with. On Ichiro(!)'s comment, the first line is "This is the player people think Tony Gwynn was". The implication being that Ichiro's the real deal, and BETTER than Tony. Comparing their age 27-29 seasons: Ichiro SB/CS OPS+ 350/381/457 56/14 127 321/388/425 31/15 125 312/352/436 34/8 110 Gwynn ...

I don't ordinarily like to start the week with a mailbag, but today's letter is so passionate, it really can't wait any longer. Regular reader Jeff #287 writes: Real quick... well, I probably won't be, but about [Rey] Ordonez. You say you're not as upset as you feel maybe you should be. I think you really should be, I'm downright PO'd at the signing. What bothers me: KT said in the SDUT (in not so many words) that even if Khalil plays better than Ordonez, but at about the level of Vazquez, which is to be expected with a rookie competing for his first ST ever, Khalil goes to Portland. I am of the firm ...

Hope y'all had a great Thanksgiving! We went out to a killer buffet at this place called the 94th Aero Squadron. Sat out on the patio, watched the planes take off from and land at Montgomery Field. Very relaxing, very filling. So the long-awaited trade with the A's finally happened. Was that like pulling teeth, or what? No matter, the Pads finally have a legit catcher. Now it's time to start working on the bullpen. Rod Beck is still a possibility, as is Japanese reliever Akinori Otsuka: Padres Look To Sign Otsuka (Baseball America). Meantime, Terrence Long is rumored to be nearing the end ...
