Series Preview: Tom Goyne Talks Phillies

Tuesday, April 29, 2008
by Geoff Young
The Padres head to Philly for three starting Tuesday evening. Among other things, this means I got to pick the brains of Tom Goyne, proprietor of the estimable Balls, Sticks, & Stuff, about his team. (We did this last year, too, and had more fun than you can shake a ball, stick, or stuff at.) Without further ado, I turn the blog over to Mr. Goyne... Ducksnorts: How many games do you see the Phillies winning this year, and will it be enough for a return trip to the post-season? Goyne: Given that the ...

Series Preview: Jim McLennan Talks Diamondbacks

Friday, April 18, 2008
by Geoff Young
Yeah, it's Friday, but we've got something way cooler than links. We've got Jim McLennan, of AZ Snakepit fame, with us, and he's going to give us the dirt on this year's Diamondbacks. Ducksnorts: I picked Arizona to win the NL West in 2007 on the strength of its good young position players. The team took the division, but without much help from said players. Now that these kids have a year of experience under their belts, what are your expectations for the Diamondbacks in 2008? McLennan: For obvious reasons, the experience is certainly going to help. This time last year, Chris Young had just made his major-league debut, Mark Reynolds was in Double-A and Justin Upton was all the way down in High-A. Now, ...

Series Preview: Rox Girl Talks Rockies

Tuesday, April 15, 2008
by Geoff Young
The Padres and Rockies hook up for the first time since that fateful Game 163 in Denver last October. I recently had a chance to chat with Rox Girl of the excellent Rockies blog Purple Row about her expectations for the 2008 season, the challenges of marketing a team that plays half its games west of Connecticut, and more. Ducksnorts: Coming off their first World Series appearance, I'd imagine the Rockies are a hot item in town right about now. How optimistic are fans that this team can return to the playoffs in a very competitive NL West? How do you see this club doing in '08? Rox Girl: The mood around Lodo is very optimistic. Well, at least it was before we got pummeled ...

Series Preview: El Lefty Malo Talks Giants

Monday, April 7, 2008
by Geoff Young
The Padres embark on their inaugural road trip of 2008. First stop is San Francisco, where long-time Padres skipper Bruce Bochy calls the shots but long-time Padres nemesis Barry Bonds no longer calls home. We caught up with veteran Giants blogger El Lefty Malo to chat about the upcoming series between these two NL West rivals. Ducksnorts: Let's start with the elephant in the room: What does Barry Bonds' departure mean to the Giants franchise and the city of San Francisco? El Lefty Malo: In the context of everything else that's happened this winter, it means the Giants should have the worst offense in the major leagues this year. They were just about there with Bonds, and adding Aaron Rowand isn't going ...

Series Preview: Lisa Gray Talks Astros

Monday, March 31, 2008
by Geoff Young
I'm making a concerted effort to do more interviews this year and get more voices talking here at Ducksnorts. With that in mind, it's my great pleasure to bring you Lisa Gray, of the excellent Astros Dugout, who will tell us a little more about the Padres' first opponent of 2008. Ducksnorts: The Astros and Padres are similar in many respects. Both teams entered the league during the '60s and still are largely ignored by the national media. With the retirement of Jeff Bagwell and now Craig Biggio, how does the franchise go about re-establishing itself in an environment where so much emphasis is placed on individual players, particularly those in large media markets? Gray: That ...

Q&A with Tom Krasovic

Monday, March 24, 2008
by Geoff Young
Tom Krasovic has been covering the Padres for the San Diego Union-Tribune since 1994. Recently he took time out of his busy schedule to discuss baseball, the beat, and life. We exchanged emails over the course of several days, and although it's difficult to convey certain nuances over the 'net, Krasovic's passion for the game quickly became evident. Ducksnorts: Who were your favorite baseball players when you were growing up? Krasovic: Immortal Angels such as Tom Satriano, Roger Repoz and Alex Johnson, just because the California Angels were my team as a young boy. Then came the 1970s and a move to southern Ohio so I tracked [Joe] Morgan, [Johnny] Bench, [Pete] Rose, [Tony] Perez, [George] Foster, [Dave] Concepcion, [Cesar] Geronimo. Rooting for the Angels still came ...

Interview: Steve Poltz, Part 5

Thursday, December 13, 2007
by Geoff Young
In Part 4 of our chat with singer/songwriter/Padre fan Steve Poltz poltz.com, Steve talked about Steve Garvey's homer in the NLCS in '84, shagging fly balls while Tony Gwynn took batting practice, and more. In our final segment, Steve discusses his meeting of Ken Caminiti, the heartbreak of watching USD alum Brady Clark struggle in Colorado, and his favorite baseball movies. *** Ducksnorts: How about the '98 team? Steve Poltz: Back in '98, Kevin Brown did it all. He was such a gamer; I f***in' loved that guy... [Ken] Caminiti, down in Mexico getting an IV... I have a memory of him driving on his motorcycle at Windansea -- that was the year I knew the whole ...
