Padres Sign Five Top International Prospects

Thursday, July 3, 2008

I never think of the future. It comes soon enough. --Albert Einstein I'm no Einstein, but I certainly think of the future. So, apparently, do the Padres. As threatened, they have proven to be major players in this year's international market. In our recent discussion with Sandy Alderson, he indicated that the Padres hoped to "sign some players that we think are a cut above what we've been able to sign in previous years," and that's precisely what they've done. On July 2, the Padres, who have been criticized in the past for not investing as heavily in amateur talent as they might, shelled out $5 million on five players: RHP Adis Portillo, SS Alvaro Aristy, OF Luis Domoromo, INF/OF Corey Adamson, and RHP Elvin Tavarez. ...

This whole Allan Dykstra thing has me a bit puzzled. I'm glad that the Padres are investigating whether Dykstra's pre-existing medical condition might cause further problems, but I wonder why this is becoming an issue during contract negotiations. Maybe before drafting him would have been a better time to resolve any lingering concerns? With the injury to last year's first-rounder, Nick Schmidt, you'd think the Padres would want to err on the side of extreme caution. I guess they are, but the timing seems a little strange. Here's hoping it all works out okay. Triple-A -- Portland 5, Colorado Springs 4...

I've got a new article up at Hardball Times on everyone's favorite first baseman from Eastlake High... Triple-A No games scheduled in the Pacific Coast League. Double-A -- South All-Stars 7, North All-Stars 3 Kyle Blanks, Chad Huffman, and Craig Cooper combined to go 0-for-9 with a walk. The other Missions representative, Matt Buschmann, worked two scoreless innings of relief. The game took place at Hammons Field in Springfield, which I visited on my way back from Cooperstown last summer. That was the day before my car got smashed. Good times... High-A No games scheduled in the California League. Low-A -- Fort Wayne 8, West Michigan 0...
