Padres Trade Rumors

Wednesday, August 1, 2001
by Geoff Young
More trade analysis: Jayson Stark, ESPN. Closer to home, The U-T this morning reports that the Padres are still working on a potential deal with St. Louis for disgruntled outfielder Ray Lankford. Personally, I don't believe taking away playing time from Bubba Trammell to accommodate a 34-year-old expensive malcontent is such a hot idea. Apparently the Pads also turned down an offer from the Reds of Dmitri Young and Ben Broussard for Phil Nevin. Talentwise, at least that's reasonable. I think Broussard is going to be a stud hitter, in the Brian Giles mode. As much as I like Nevin, I would have been very tempted to pull the trigger on this one. David Lundquist made it to San Diego but never was activated, so ...

Padres Trade Hitchcock to Yankees for Brett Jodie

Tuesday, July 31, 2001
by Geoff Young
About the Hitchcock trade, it was virtually assured that he wouldn't re-sign with the Padres, so the question became whether it was better to eat his salary and take the compensation draft picks, or go out and get some bodies now. It's a tough call. The two kids Kevin Towers picked up have promise but neither is a top prospect. Darren Blakely is a terrific athlete who gets mixed reviews as a baseball player. Brett Jodie falls into the Brian Tollberg/Brian Lawrence/Junior Herndon mold of finesse righthander. The good news is, Jodie is at Triple-A and pretty close to the bigs. The bad news is, he's probably a #4 or #5 starter at best, and the Padres have tons of those already. Brian Lawrence will assume ...

Promotions, Trades, and the Annoying Diamondbacks

Movers and shakers: Righthander Ben Howard and lefty reliever Cliff Bartosh promoted from Lake Elsinore to Mobile. Southpaw Oliver Perez promoted from Ft. Wayne to Lake Elsinore. Fellow lefty Steve Watkins reassigned from Mobile to Lake Elsinore to take Jake Peavy's spot in the rotation while the latter recovers from a minor elbow injury. Outfielder Kory DeHaan assigned to Mobile from Portland. Infielder Auntwan Riggins assigned to Portland from Mobile. More movers and shakers: Todd Walker and Robin Jennings to Cincy for Alex Ochoa. Interesting. Evidently Walker pushes Pokey Reese back to shortstop while Barry Larkin recovers from his latest ailment. I'm curious to know what Ochoa's contract status is. If he's lucky, he could pull a Jeffrey Hammonds -- put some serious numbers on the ...

Report on Ben Howard, Ideas for Future Articles

Friday, July 13, 2001
by Geoff Young
A report on Ben Howard has been posted. Kind of lost in the shuffle with all the good young arms in the Padres organization, but still someone to watch. I'm calling the column "Future Friars" now. I've been thinking about going to that title for a while, and now seemed as good a time as any to make the change. A couple ideas for future articles: Top 15-20 Padres prospects. I'm not a big fan of making such lists, but people are curious and it gets me thinking about why I like certain players over others. I'll probably do this sometime next week, before I run more Future Friars reports. Trades that brought current Padres here. Yeah, everybody knows about Andy Sheets for Phil ...

Emil Brown vs Ruben Rivera

Wednesday, July 11, 2001
by Geoff Young
First off, the All-Star Game. Based on this year's stats, there was nobody less likely to make an offensive contribution than Cal Ripken, but there he went, knocking one out of the park in the third inning. How sweet was that... Did you see Matt Morris' curveballs? Glad I don't have to try to hit those for a living. And of course, Tommy Lasorda toppling over to avoid being hit by Vlad Guerrero's shattered bat was classic. Elsewhere, the Padres made a minor deal last night, sending farmhands Shawn Camp and Shawn Garrett to the Pittsburgh Pirates for outfielder Emil Brown. I know Brown was a prospect in the A's organization several years ago who was rushed to the big leagues via the Rule V draft, ...

Wohlers to Yankees, Patterson Up with Cubs

by Geoff Young
I'm about to start pumping out some reports on Padres prospects but before I get started I thought we'd take a look back at some of my previous reports to see how some of those guys turned out. In other news, the Reds today traded reliever Mark Wohlers to the Yankees. I'll bet he gets a standing ovation from the New York faithful the first time he takes the mound. Corey Patterson is up with the Cubs. He'll eventually hit like Ray Lankford but don't expect too much just yet.
