Blast from the Past: Mark Phillips Outrage

Tuesday, November 25, 2008
by Geoff Young
What a fool I used to be. Those are Neil Peart's words, but they apply here as well, so I'll use 'em. When the Padres traded Bubba Trammell and minor-league left-hander Mark Phillips for Rondell White back in '03, I was... a little less than pleased. I actually vented in three parts: Part 1 includes this gem: I realize I may not be the most objective person when it comes to talking about Phillips. I've seen him pitch on several occasions and I even once had the chance to chat with him while he was charting a game at Elsinore. But beyond the fact that he seemed like a nice enough kid, he has a serious arm. You just don't see a lot of young lefties ...

One Less Reason

As you are no doubt aware by now, the Padres have traded Greg Maddux to the Dodgers for two minor-league players to be named later or cash. According to Tom Krasovic at the U-T, "By Oct. 15, the Padres will choose two Dodgers minor leaguers from a list of five already agreed upon by the two clubs." Cash apparently is an option that "would come into play only if injuries weaken the identified trade list." Thoughts? Yeah, I have a few... I'm thrilled for Maddux. He's a class act who has ...

Padres Acquire Edmonds

Saturday, December 15, 2007
by Geoff Young
The Padres are about to pick up center fielder Jim Edmonds from St. Louis for minor-league third baseman David Freese. Reportedly, the Cardinals also will be sending $1 million, which is why the deal hasn't been formally announced yet. Edmonds is in decline, and the Pads will need a contingency plan, but I like this move. They're essentially signing him to a 1-year, $7 million deal. Like the acquisitions of Randy Wolf and Tadahito Iguchi (and the re-signing of Greg Maddux), it's a relatively low-risk move. The last time San Diego brought in a guy that everyone else had written off, it worked out pretty ...

Kotsay for Hernandez

Hadn't planned to be away from the blog for so long this time. I started to scratch something together the other day when the Giants went out and picked up A.J. Pierzynski, because I figured that move might impact the Padres. And it did. When last we met, I mentioned that I expected Kevin Towers to grab one of Pierzynski or Ramon Hernandez to be his catcher in 2004. When the Twins-Giants trade went down, I suspected it was only a matter of time before the rumored Hernandez for Mark Kotsay deal would happen. Now that it (apparently) has happened, what do I think of the trade? That's a complex question. I'll start by ...

Giving Away Phillips

What the heck, I haven't done a good rant in a while. Okay, there was the Junior Seau riff the other day but when you get down to it, that was just football. So, if you missed it, the Pads acquired Rondell White from the Yankees. Yep, Kevin Towers finally found a taker for Bubba Trammell's contract and he managed to pick up a decent outfielder in return. Not bad, right? Certainly no cause for a rant. There was one other player in the deal: Mark Phillips. Honestly, when I heard there was a minor leaguer involved, I figured it was a lesser propect, like Bernie Castro or J.J. Furmaniak. Never in my wildest dreams did I imagine it would be ...

Padres Trade Williams to Cardinals for Lankford

Friday, August 3, 2001

I keep telling folks Ryan Klesko can hit lefties. Did you see that grand slam yesterday off Jeff Fassero? On a 1-2 pitch, no less. A thing of beauty... Now, about the Woody Williams-Ray Lankford trade. I have to preface my comments by noting that when Kevin Towers dealt Joey Hamilton to the Blue Jays for Williams back in 1998, I was less than impressed. But Woody has pitched his heart out for the Padres the past 2 1/2 years. He's not the most dominating guy in the world but he's definitely a guy you want on your side. Whatever it takes to get the job done, he'll do it. Great guy to have on a club. I'll miss him a lot. But, as we are ...

Padres Trade Rumors

Wednesday, August 1, 2001
by Geoff Young
More trade analysis: Jayson Stark, ESPN. Closer to home, The U-T this morning reports that the Padres are still working on a potential deal with St. Louis for disgruntled outfielder Ray Lankford. Personally, I don't believe taking away playing time from Bubba Trammell to accommodate a 34-year-old expensive malcontent is such a hot idea. Apparently the Pads also turned down an offer from the Reds of Dmitri Young and Ben Broussard for Phil Nevin. Talentwise, at least that's reasonable. I think Broussard is going to be a stud hitter, in the Brian Giles mode. As much as I like Nevin, I would have been very tempted to pull the trigger on this one. David Lundquist made it to San Diego but never was activated, so ...
