Overlooked Players in Padres History

Shifting gears a little, one idea I have for the Ducksnorts 2008 Baseball Annual is a chapter devoted to three or so former Padres that didn't make our lists of top players in franchise history (2007 Annual) but whose accomplishments deserve attention. I'm knee deep in the 1969 season, so one of my subjects will be outfielder Ollie Brown. This leaves two more ex-Padres to consider. With no real guidelines other than they cannot have appeared in last year's book, who should we profile? Here are a few names to help get us started: Steve ArlinGreg W. Oh So Quiet

Welcome to the calm before the storm. Not much going on right now, but the Opening Day roster is starting to take shape. Right-hander Scott Strickland will be waived today, leaving righties Kevin Cameron and Mike Thompson as the leading candidates for the final two bullpen spots. Kevin Towers and Bud Black both think highly of Cameron and like his ability to get lefties out. Cameron got smacked around when I saw him, but my sample of one game is essentially meaningless. I'll defer to the experts here. Meanwhile, nobody is saying who will take the last bench spot now that Todd Walker is gone. I know we all want to ...

The Book Has Arrived!

My grandmother died in January 2006 after living a long and rich life. Born in Albany, N.Y., not far from the Baseball Hall of Fame, she inadvertently fueled my passion for the game when I was a young boy. A friend of hers worked as the house doctor at Dodger Stadium in the mid-'70s and used to give her media sheets from games past, which she then gave to me. They had no value to her, but she saw how I pored over them as though they represented great truths of humankind. If only I would apply myself in other areas the way I did when examining baseball statistics, the written record of my heroes. But I didn't, and so here I am, fascinated by baseball ...

Final Book Update

by Geoff Young
Most of you already know this, but for anyone who has been living in a cave over the winter, I quit my job in November to work full time on the Ducksnorts 2007 Baseball Annual. I'm very pleased to announce that, thanks to the help of many kind folks, the project is nearly complete. Here's a quick update: The book is with the printer, and I should receive a proof copy by Wednesday, March 14; assuming all is well, the book will go on sale by the end of the week. The price is $17.95 plus shipping and handling for paperback, or $9.56 for a PDF download; these price points ensure that my cut is the same regardless, so get whichever works best for you. Help Wanted

There is no great writing, only great rewriting. -- Louis Brandeis Are we there yet? -- me I have a small favor to ask. I've got three chapters that need a good read through, and I could use your help. One is on the '98 season, one is on Gwynn's 3000th hit, and one is on Kevin Towers' trade record. The first two run roughly 25 pages combined, while the latter is that long on its own. I'll need a fairly quick turnaround -- the end of the weekend, if possible -- so it would be great if we could split up the work. If interested and available, please drop me a line. You will have my undying gratitude. For everyone else, here are a couple of fantastic reads:...

Ducksnorts Book Excerpt: The Miracle That Almost Happened

The following excerpt is taken from the Ducksnorts 2007 Baseball Annual, tentatively scheduled for March 2007 publication. This is part of a chapter that focuses on the San Diego Padres’ World Series season of 1998. The Padres kicked off the season in style, dismantling the Reds, 10-2, in Cincinnati behind new ace Kevin Brown, who surrendered just one run over 6 1/3 innings. Brown also contributed at the plate, knocking a bases-loaded double to account for half of a 6-run outburst in the seventh inning. Tony Gwynn accounted for the other half, hammering a three-run homer to right-center. Wally Joyner added a home run of his own, and the Padres were off and running. By the end ...
