#11@Geoff Young: Here's the Cabrera article.

#13@LynchMob: I put Durango more in the Juan Pierre/Luis Castillo family of hitters. If he hits .290, that's somewhat useful; if he hits .260, not so much.

#14@Lance Richardson: I'm glad to hear Kevin confirm what many of us have known.

On another note, I will have an actual article up (gasp!) this coming Monday.

Today at BP:

Scott (San Diego): Padres have been promoting a lot of the prospect pipeline to the bigs this year. Any players left in AA or AAA to be excited about?

Kevin Goldstein: PLENTY. If I had to give a great leap forward to one team rather than players, it might be the Padres. Players to watch at every level.

I gotta know what y'all think about what Luis Durango did yesterday ...

http://sandiego.padres.mlb.com/media/video.jsp?mid=200909166690453&c_id=sd

… yes, he can FLY! I *love* how he beat the pitcher to 1B … FUN!

Surely he can't succeed long term without ever hitting a ball out of the infield, right? So ... will he be able to do that? Will he be able to draw a walk from an MLB pitcher?

Or is he just Freddy Guzman teasing us again?

Freddy Guzman has resurfaced - the Yankees recalled him to use as a pinch runner. They are considering using him in the postseason in the same role.

#10@Geoff Young: Upon further reflection, I'm thinking also of guys like Greg Brock and Sid Bream.

On another note, this week's column has been canceled on account of life... I will have an article about Everth Cabrera up at THT later this week.

#5@Ryan: Good question. Clark strikes me as a reasonable comp in terms of upside. Likelihood of reaching that level? I'm thinking less than 5 percent. More realistic is something in the Jeff Conine/Kevin Millar range. But Dykstra has work to do before he gets there.

The only negative about the article, imo, is that it doesn't mention Tony Gwynn :-)

OT ... just something I think is of general interest to this community ... about KC's Zack Grienke ...

http://royalsauthority.com/2009-articles/august/around-the-royals-in-ten-paragraphs.html

specifically this entry ...

The big news, of course, was Zack Grienke's record setting 15 strikeout performance last night. Zack was routinely touching 97 mph with his fastball last night and was still throwing 96 mph in the 8th inning. I encourage you to check out Greinke's pitching data over at Brooks Baseball, paying particular attention to the 'All Game Pitch Data' chart near the bottom. You will note that after the first inning, Zack threw above 95 mph and below 75 mph in every single inning. Yeah, the kid's pretty good.
