Nice one. Maybe Don Wakamatsu read your piece, Geoff.

I still have fond memories of Branyan hitting monstrous foul balls. The guy can definitely hit and hit the baseball far. Of course, nobody seems to notice this guy nationally.

Oh, the comments are filled with Adam Eaton ineptness as a ML pitcher. Enjoy.

#7@Didi: Thanks for the Branyan update. As I mentioned in last week's article, I'm thrilled to see him finally getting a shot and making the most of it.

My colleague Michael Street wrote a fun piece on Branyan at BDD not long ago. I especially enjoy the conclusion. 8)

I remember when ...

... the Padres were criticized by some for not signing a couple of "big name" free agents ... such as these 2 who are now on a list that BP calls "untradable" ...

Positional value and market forces usually combine to create some hard-driven deals, but how do you explain the Astros' predicament with Carlos Lee? A left fielder who was already looking very DH-y when he was inked to a surprising six-year, $100 million deal, the slugger's locked in place with a no-trade window that extends through 2010. The deal will still have two more years (and $37 million) to run once that clause winks out of existence, but how many teams can you expect will want to trade for a 35-year-old big man to park at DH or kill grass with his shadow after planting him in left, let alone invest in the hope he won't lose too much of his power leaving the Crawford Boxes behind him?

... Bradley might not even be the most untradeable Cub. that would probably be Kosuke Fukudome, whose now-you-see-it/now-you-don't production reinvents the concept of what it means to go streaking, and with his no-trade clause and salaries of $11.5 million, $13 million, and $13.5 million through 2011, Cubs fans can expect to buckle in for an especially lengthy roller coaster ride.

A familiar name. Whoever made the bet a few season ago, better pay the winner up.

#4@Masticore317: For some reason, this question made me wonder how Kyler Burke is doing ...

http://web.minorleaguebaseball.com/milb/stats/stats.jsp?n=Kyler%20Burke&pos=OF&sid=milb&t=p_pbp&pid=501965

He's the prospect we gave up to get Barrett ... Burke was the 35th pick in the 2006 draft ... and he's now in his 2nd go-round at Low-A ball ...

Just a reminder of what the long odds are even for a "first round draft pick" ...

ps. Here's a source that agrees with GY that Ben Johnson's not played since 2007 ...
