Kt was on Scott and BR this morning and said two things of interest.

1. Kouz's shoulder is still bothering him and it is really behind schedule as far as rehab goes.

2. They will be looking to trade Giles within the first few months of the season.

Kouz's shoulder scares me a bit because he has gotten off to a slow start the last 2 years and if he has an injured shoulder at that start of next season I would imagine that it will make his 09 start even slower.

The Padres will be much improved this year.

I am quite confident of a 67-95 record. They may even approach 70 victories. Of course, that would not place them among the worst Padre squads I've ever rooted for, so i can handle it.

Zips 2009 for the Padres. Some odd analysis, imo, at the top precedes the actual numbers. I guess the assumption is the team won't be sold before next winter if the author "wouldn't be surprised if they seriously explored trading Gonzalez next winter." Seems unlikely it would take that long if Moorad is already in an exclusive negotiating position, but it is a very uncertain economy.

#4@Tom Waits: Kill the Burke to SS idea...

Omar Vizquel...Really? What happened to the youth movement? All these moves do are take up another bench spot that the Padres don't have. If you assume that Vizquel and Burke are starting, that would leave a bench of:

Hairston
Venable
L-Rod
Cabrera (can't drop him from the 25 man roster or they lose him)
Backup catcher

So if they do that they will have to cut ties with E-Gon and Denker...bleh these moves are bumming me out because instead of a youth movement we are getting the 99-03 Padres...

I like the Burke pickup. A couple years ago I thought he'd be a great fit. It looks like he's struggled a bit since then, but what does it hurt to give him a shot? He's versatile also, playing basically every position.

And regarding the Langston call, I'm STILL pissed about that!

I don't think they signed Burke with the intention of starting him. Towers can't be that foolish can he? I think it's likely that he's here to be the last guy on the bench and be the utility fielder as he's played every position except catcher in the majors.

I still think that they have to trade Kouzmanoff, most likely for a shortstop. Again, it doesn't make any sense at all to play two third basemen everyday and try to fit Gerut, Hairston and Venable into centerfield.

#1@Steve C: Me either. They already had Denker and Lrod to act as Antonelli cushions. Maybe they see Burke as a possible SS, but it's hard to see him as more of a possible SS than LRod.

And right over there in GY's BallHype links there's a story about the Padres pursuing Craig Counsell. Yes, the Craig Counsell whose high -- HIGH, mind you -- OPS+ since 2000 has been 89. His average OPS+ for that period is 73.

Every year somebody brings up Langston and Martinez. 10+ years have not dulled the pain.

re: Burke ... great signing ... no way Antonelli should do anything but start the season at AAA ... he needs to have some serious success at that level ... and I think he will ... and then he will contribute to the Padres ... perhaps that's not until 2010 ... but it's still my expectation ...

I saw a note in my local paper yesterday about the White Sox invitations to spring training ... Bryan Myrow amongst them ... I'll be rooting for that guy ... he's a hitter.
