#44@Tom Waits: This has been a lost year for Bard - no doubt. I hope you are right about a 'far' more than likely bounce back. Bard had a stretch of 500 at bats over 2 seasons (playing in a platoon situation) that with above average production and really that has been about the extent of his top play. Coupled with the fact that he is in the lineup for his bat and not his defense, if he doesn't hit at the 90-100+ OPS level than he doesn't bring much value.
Now 31 years of age, it seems clear that he is not an everyday catcher. Therefore, should the Pads look to add a proven veteran catcher in case Bard does not bouce back ? I am not sure that Hundley could take the majority of the load as an everyday catcher.
Current score: 0 (to vote for this comment, please visit the site)

#46@SDSUBaseball: If the Padres see Maddux as a league-average 200 innings guy, and if he'd take 6M, that would work. The problem the last 2 seasons has been that the Padres have built the rotation around the proposition that Maddux is much better than that and have paid him on that miscalculation.

I'd rather throw the money at Oliver Perez, myself. Significantly younger and possibly cheaper, with SD ties. IIRC, when he was traded he said he'd love to come back someday. And that was before the pitching nirvana of Petco. But the specific name isn't as important as the Padres finally realizing that the rotation needs more attention than it's received most years since 2003.
Current score: 0 (to vote for this comment, please visit the site)

#44@Tom Waits: If they can resign Maddux (for a more reasonable price say... $6M) Isnt he your league average innings eater? Then throw some money at AJ Burnett and I think you can turn this team around very quickly next year.
Current score: 0 (to vote for this comment, please visit the site)

#38@David Coonce:

1. Gerut's been a terrific hitter this year, closing in on Agon for the team lead in OPS +. His performance against lefties may be a fluke, but there are lot of starting outfielders who have some platoon splits. I don't see how he's not a starter.

2. Egon's defense is what keeps him from being a regular, probably.

3. In fairness, Hundley was a late scratch before yesterday's game. The Padres do have a backup catcher; his name is Luke Carlin. Last night they only had one catcher on the roster. It still might have been smarter to pinch-hit with....who, Iguchi, I guess?.... and then use Egon behind the plate. At least he's worn the gear before. Bochy used to drive me crazy with that every so often - so worried about what might happen in the 10th inning that he reduces the team's chances of even getting there. Unfortunately, Iguchi vs. Lidge isn't a terrific matchup for us either.

4. Shrek would be a nice fit as a platoon player.

7. The reason(s) this team has been terrible are also fixable. Whether they'll have the will and / or money to do it is a different story. They've had good luck finding relievers in the past, and the bullpen has been by far the weakest link. They need one good SP and a league-average innings-eater, and they have the money to get that. And they need to get something at the plate out of SS and C, which would have made this year's offense well above-average. It's far more likely that Green and Bard regress to the mean than that they have another terrible year.
Current score: 0 (to vote for this comment, please visit the site)
