For your pre-game entertainment, I’ll carry-over one thought from this morning’s thread on Lake Elsinore …

As first noted here by Melvin Nieves a couple of days ago, there’s a new place to go to see minor league stats …

    http://www.baseballprospectus......noreqa.php

… in addition to “real stats” it also has “regular translation” (for thinks like park effects) *and* has what it calls “peak translation” (but has been better described as “peak projection”, ie. a reasonable estimate of what each player’s stats would/will translate to as a 27-year-old major leaguer) … which, to me, is a *very* interesting perspective!!!

For example, here’s 3 of our boyz from amongst the Cal League leaders …

Year Age Tm Lge AB H DB TP HR BB SO R RBI SB CS Out BA OBA SA EQA EQR BABIP POW Krt
    Kellen_Kulbacki 2008 22 LEL Cal 287 86 11 0 18 39 51 49 50 0 2 205 .300 .389 .530 .307 53 312 275 156 62-RF -1

    Cedric_Hunter 2008 20 LEL Cal 479 142 28 2 11 48 36 83 62 7 4 349 .296 .358 .430 .276 70 303 147 68 100-CF -1

    Eric_Sogard 2008 22 LEL Cal 435 122 27 2 10 64 56 73 60 5 4 321 .280 .371 .418 .278 65 304 161 112 83-2B -4

ps. the “pre” function used to work … but now it doesn’t seem to … whassup?

Fox Sports is reporting that Brian Giles was claimed on waivers by an unknown team. My initial thought was that they try to pass everyone through just to keep their options open. However, sources say the Padres want to make a trade with that team, but it is also not yet known if the team is willing to give up a player for Giles. Interesting.

I was on the Hairston bandwagon a few months ago. Now I’m on the Gerut bandwagon.

I didn’t realize Gerut was a FA at the end of the season. With his lack of major league service time, I figured he would be up for arbitration or something. If he continues to hit like this, the Pads are going to end up in a bidding war for him, which is not good. Since he says he loves it here, I think they should try and get him signed ASAP while his price tag is still affordable and other teams can’t bid for him.

    http://web.minorleaguebaseball.....p;did=milb

    … hey, it’s a start! A passed-ball by Carlin allows 3 unearned runs :-(

There’s growing data to support a Sept look-see for Ciofrone … who was on NO ONE’s radar screen even just a couple of months ago … but is now sporting a .324 / .399 / .515 line in 75 games at Portland. Seems like he’s a super candidate for 2009’s “utility infielder” …

Gerut has quietly put together a great season. It seems like he’s all the way back to where he was as a rookie. BP’s translated stats (neutral park) has Gerut as 316/384/498, better than his (untranslated) 279/336/494 rookie season.

Or to use OPS+, +121 for this year compared to +120 for 2003.

  89. Bruce Says:

#15@JMAR: Let’s see what happens. I am favor of the move as long as we get something decent back. If we just let him go and save the money hoping that he will come back in the winter, I will be disappointed, as well as if we get some C level prospect. He’s an average, if slightly above average, OF, but signed at a below market rate.

It is almost certain that the player coming back has to be a minor leaguer right? Otherwise the player coming in the opposite direction would also have to clear waivers. Or does it not matter?

#90@Turbine Dude: Heard it, pretty cool. Good to see your boy Merideth throw well.

  94. JMAR Says:

#89@Bruce: The kinds of players that pass through waivers (high salaried veterans) aren’t the kind of players the Padres would want back, so I have to think they would get minor leaguers that aren’t on the 40-man roster back. The good thing is that they can easily shop him in the offseason or just keep him for next season, so they can probably just pass on the deal unless the claiming team gives up some good talent.

  98. Lance Richardson Says:

    #97@Field39:

I think that the 10 and 5 are tied to MLB service time, rather than calendar dates, but it would seem to me that OG has been in the majors the whole time, accumulating service time. I’d guess that he’d be a 10-5 guy this offseason. Of course, I could be entirely wrong.
