Stephen Faris: 7 IP, 5 H, 0 R, 0 HR, 3 BB, 3 SO
Jonathan Ellis: 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 HR, 0 BB, 3 SO

Faris provides another strong outing for the Missions, who spin their second straight shutout… I still can’t find anything on why Steve Garrison left Thursday’s start after just two innings, but here’s a cool article on the young southpaw.

High-ALake Elsinore 8, Stockton 7

Kellen KulbackiEric Sogard: 2-for-5, 2B, HR
Cedric Hunter: 2-for-5
Mitch Canham: 1-for-4, HR, HBP
Kellen Kulbacki (DH): 2-for-4, 2 HR, BB
Ernesto Frieri: 5.2 IP, 5 H, 6 R, 4 HR, 1 BB, 6 SO

The wind was blowing 16 mph out to left, but only one (Kulbacki’s second) of the eight homers hit in this contest is described as having gone to that part of the field.

Low-AFort Wayne 11, Dayton 3

Brad Chalk: 2-for-5, SB

Sawyer Carroll: 2-for-5, 2B
Logan Gelbrich: 1-for-4
Rob Musgrave: 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 HR, 0 BB, 1 SO

I will catch the Ems in Eugene on Tuesday. Woo-hoo!

RookieAZL Cubs 16, AZL Padres 15

Keisy Marte: 2-for-3, 2B, 2 BB
Jaff Decker: 2-for-4, 2B, HR, 2 BB, E
Edgar Garzon (1B-3B): 2-for-5
Kevin Hansen (PH-2B): 1-for-1, 3B

This is hilarious. The two teams combined for 31 runs, 35, hits, 7 errors, 15 walks, and 8 wild pitches. The nine-inning contest lasted 3 hours, 59 minutes… Decker continues his torrid start.

RookieDSL Nationals1 8, DSL Padres 0

Jonathan Galvez (DH): 0-for-2, BB
Rymer Liriano: 0-for-4

Paul DePodesta riffs on Galvez, noting the radically different playing conditions in the DSL. It’s worth remembering that the league SLG in 2007 was .320, which is much lower than that of MLB last year (.423).

  1. Garrison left the game early on Thurs b/c he was hit in his pitching arm and they wanted to be on the cautious side. Just a little bruising and swelling, but apparently he is fine and will make his next start.

  2. Padres 4th round draft pick Jason Kipnis from ASU had a great night in the Cape League last night. He went 4 for 5 with a double and a stolen base. He’s hitting .385/.467/.423 in a very tough hitting league this summer. He looked good in the outfield as well.

6th round pick Cole Figurora is struggling, hitting .146/.205/.195.

  3. Decker sure knows how to start his professional career.

Kulbacki has made a nice turnaround in LE.

    Faris keeps on rolling.

    Any word on John Hudgins?

  4. #1@Brandon: Thanks for the update; I was hoping a lack of information meant it wasn’t serious.

#4@Masticore317: I haven’t heard anything on Hudgins in a while… And yeah, Kulbacki has been fantastic.

  5. Ordered my ticket yesterday for the BP event. I’ll give away my season seats that night, and sit with the common folk. :-)

  6. #5@Geoff Young: Hudgins seemed like he had a chance, but being out for so long surely isn’t helping.

  7. I think you all need to know about Geoff’s man-crush… Geoff and I were talking about Kulbacki back in January I think it was. He was just gushing… I asked they’d kissed yet. He wouldn’t answer. It was really disturbing…

  8. #7@Masticore317: Hudgins reminds us that TJ surgery is not a silver bullet.

#8@Peter Friberg: GY should only be embarrassed if he HASN’T kissed him yet. Kulbacki will kiss anybody.

  9. #9@Tom Waits: I thought the comparisons to OG were based on his body type and mixture of on-base and power skills. ;-)
