The way the Dykstra thing is playing out makes me wonder about the Stauffer pick in 2003. The Padres claimed they didn’t know about the shoulder injury before they drafted him, but the existence of the injury saved the Padres around $2m. Now they drafted another “injured” player even though there is no reason they didn’t know about the injury beforehand. No matter what Dykstra’s leverage is weakened now, I wonder if that was the reason for the pick (since the pick certainly wasn’t the logical one). On one level it sort of makes sense — save $1m here to spend $1m on a Dominican player.

I was at that game last night, when Nick hit that dinger we all knew it from the sound it made off the bat - and so did he. And for him to be able to come through the next inning was even sweeter.
