IGD: Padres @ Yankees (18 Jun 08)

Jake PeavyPadres (31-41) @ Yankees (38-33)
Jake Peavy vs Darrell Rasner

Channel 4SD

MLB, B-R

New rule: Only the fifth inning counts…

SD: .248/.320/.394, 34 runs
Opp: .209/.280/.291, 22 runs

With a little extrapolation, Pythagoras puts us at 50-22. What an easy way to pick up 19 games in the standings. Why didn’t I think of this earlier?

Hey Padres fans fortunate enough to call the West Coast home, I of all SD fans need a win from Peavy tonight more than you guys do. At least you did not have to wake up this morning after the Bronx Bomb fest last/Stransberry comedy hour last night to a neighborhood full of obnoxious, sense of entitlement, arrogant Yankee fans like I did. Work wasn’t all that fun today for me here in New Jersey. And believe me, people east of the Mississippi don’t know who Peavy is, so the arrogance of these people goes right into tonight’s start. To add to this misery for me at this point, The Yankees YES network has been showing the 1998 World Series all week. And yes, that was a freaking strike in Game One before Tino Martinez’s freaking grand slam. Ughhh…
Go Padres, endure the NYC rain delay we’re about to see tonight

It figures! I can finally take part in an IGD while watching the game, and now…rain delay.

#3@LynchMob: We’re getting dangerously thin due to nagging injuries. I think perhaps we should send a pitcher down for an extra position player for a week or so.

Maybe Luis Rodriguez? Ambres? I really don’t wanna see Stansberry in there again after the butcher job he did at 2B last night.

Your payroll is $210m and you play a game where your starting 1B is Wilson Betemit? Yikes…..

Brian Cashman is certainly great for baseball, imagine if the Yankees got someone who knew what he was doing. Thank the baseball gods (or whoever) that they are talking about an extension for him.

  6. Posted June 18, 2008 at 4:32 pm | Permalink

#5@Schlom: I’m not sure it was any better when it was Ensberg or Shelly Duncan starting at 1B.

#6@Masticore317: Well, that’s kind of point. At least Duncan is a 1B, Betemit is a utility infielder. That’s the kind of thing the Mariners do — bench Richie Sexson for Miguel Cairo or move Ichiro! to RF so you can get the potent bat of Willie Bloomquist in.

#9@LynchMob: The Yankees YES Network, which I am forced to watch this game on here in New Jersey said they expected to lift the tarp at the bottom of the hour (7pm EST). I’m on the Jersey Shore, about 2 hours south of Yankee Stadium and at 7:55/4:55 PST, it is finally clearing up. So maybe soon…….?….?

Don’t forget folks, the rat bastards who run the Yankees are notorious for keeping fans at the stadium for up to 90 minutes during a rain delay and then canceling the game (keep people there to pay for over-priced concessions for an extra night of concession sales). Maybe they pull the same old, cancel the game right as it clears up (wouldn’t be the first time) and have a double-header tomorrow, which of course totally screws up the Padres looking ahead to Friday vs. Detroit at Petco.
I HATE THE FREAKING SCUMBAG YANKEES!

#8@Richard Wade: True enough but usually a 1B is a good hitter, not a good fielder. Anybody in the majors can probably play the position defensively, but there are certainly a lot of guys I wouldn’t want to play there. Not a lot of difference between Betemit and E-Gon and he’d be down the list on replacements of Adrian.

  14. Posted June 18, 2008 at 5:24 pm | Permalink

#7@Schlom: Ok, but Miguel Cairo is no Betemit.

Not looking so good tonite. Going to have to rally pretty soon to stay in this one. Another throwing error, whats going on lately. 5 errors in NY so far, what happened to NL best, error free (mostly) defense? Are the big-city lights getting to them? Hate to agree, but this bs reminds me of ‘98.

#34@SDSUBaseball: It woulda definitly been ugly, but Huber woulda sold out for the shot down the line. He’s done it time and time again. He has a better first step to the baseball than Magellanulty as well. He might not have had enough speed to get to the shot to the wall, but even Mac wasn’t that far off that ball.

IMHO Huber woulda made the play.

#39@SDSUBaseball: Just because he was sent down doesn’t mean he wasn’t the better fielder. Mac doesn’t have any options and would’ve probably been snapped up on the waiver wire by a AL team in need of a DH. Besides, if his back isn’t barking Mac probably makes that catch on the line as well, why wouldn’t/couldn’t the better glove?

Having watched Huber make that same play 2 or 3 times (his debut game and after the rain delay) already I’m comfortable with the idea he probably would’ve done it again.

Enough of this, nice hit E-Go, needed that!

    Nice work by Egon.

In terms of Huber’s defense. From what I saw he was solid. He wasn’t always pretty, but he made the plays.

I like that Magellanulty nickname. He goes on epic journeys while trying to track flyballs.

  49. SDSUBaseball
    Posted June 18, 2008 at 6:24 pm | Permalink

#45@130tom330: Ya, because I said he had a worse glove than Mac and was sent down because of that glove…. I dont think either have they athleticism to make that catch.

    R. Wade: Now that first pitch curve “strike” to Giles looked nowhere near the zone to me.

  50. 130tom330
    Posted June 18, 2008 at 6:24 pm | Permalink

#43@Masticore317: Not a question of “that good” but a question of “better than that.” He’s got the wheels and the glove, we’ll see him again after the Saul MacHairston experiment fails. He doesn’t have the consistent power of Mac, but he’s rarely flailing around the outfield causing errors and running into other fielders… :)

Again, it’s my opinion, and debatable (IMHO). But I’ve got seats in lower left field and seen a ton of both of these guys.

That said, Mac deserves the shot, he’s paid his dues, hope it works out. But, I hate to see Huber sent down because the “Messiah” has arrived…

  51. Posted June 18, 2008 at 6:26 pm | Permalink

#50@130tom330: Fair enough. I haven’t seen him so I have no opinion. All I know is he was a converted catcher and then a converted first baseman. Usually that doesn’t bode well for someone’s fielding reputation.

  52. 130tom330
    Posted June 18, 2008 at 6:28 pm | Permalink

#48@Mike: right!#49@SDSUBaseball: again, he was sent down because he’s the only outfielder with options, least thats what Towers said on Scott and BR the other day.

Enjoy the rally, here comes the “Messiah,” this should be good.

#65@130tom330: gotta be b/c it’s only his 2nd start after the injury. He threw 90+ pitches.
Only reason he went 6 IP his last start was that he only threw 72 pitches.

#66@parlo: Yeah, but Khalil likes aiming at the foul pole. it’s shallow to right as well, 318 (Giles), but quickly gets to 385 to right-center.

#67@Nick G: That sounds plausible, wasn’t much fanfare about it, not on XX or Ch4. I didn’t realize he threw so many pitches so fast. 93 pitches! Whew, thats not so good. Caution is good when you’re still missing 2/5ths of your starting pitching.

#92@130tom330: Its an old guy with a spoon and a frying pan. I went to some games there in the late 1990s. I think his name is Freddie or Freddie Sez (something like that)
I wouldnt read too much into it, I think it is just an old man who likes the Yankees.
Ten years ago he looked like an older Harry Dean Stanton. I can only imagine how he is now

Antonelli with another 2-hit game (plus a SB) … he’s now got a 6-game hitting streak and is 12-for-39 with 5 walks and only 4 Ks in his last 10 games …

… he’s got a *long* way back to respectibility … but he looks to be started down that path!
