Is anyone else sick of Barrett not producing at all? His bat is anemic, he can’t throw runners out, he calls a mediocre game and he seems to choke in every clutch situation. When Bard gets healthy, I’d like to see Barrett released. This guy isn’t even worth league minimum, in my opinion, yet he managed to scam arbitration pay (what– 4 mil?) off of us.
We should release KG as well then…..you realize we’re talking about 56 whole AB’s for Barrett this year right?
Barrett sposed to be able to hit too, but he is cursed, so….we have that going for us.
Barrett sucks. I say keep him but send him to Lake Elsinore just for the humiliation factor. I’m kidding, but I hear and understand your complaint. When will Bard be back anyway?
#2@Mark Ase: What about last years AB’s? Sometimes you cut a player based on what they are doing now… not often but sometimes.
#4@Oside Jon: Bard wasn’t exactly setting the world on fire with his bat before his injury either.
We have to keep Barrett for now. Colt Morton is hitting .176 at AA & it would be a good idea to let Hundley get his one more year at AAA.
#5 SDSU-yes let’s cut a catcher over about 180 AB’s in and out of being hurt…..so when are we cutting Bard?
If people don’t like the guy……just say it-but let’s not try and blame the team’s issues on someone who was a BACK UP when the season started.
Meanwhile the starting SS hits just as bad and get’s a complete free pass while making more money.
Greene plays excellent defense. Barrett plays poor defense.
Whatever you think of either, they are not parallel examples.
OT … I’m an Omar fan … here’s video of him with a straight steal of home yesterday …
http://sanfrancisco.giants.mlb.com/media/video.jsp?mid=200806132910840
… plus he made 2 other highlight-reel plays with his glove … the dude is a stud …
OT … Griffey to TB rumors … http://www.baseballprospectus.com/unfiltered/?p=905
Michael Barrett actually have the highest OPS+ of the three catchers that have gotten decent playing time. Josh Bard plays pretty terrible defense too. Luke Carlin’s track record is a .687 career minor league OPS. Let’s release all of them!
#11@Ben B.: Wow. Has. Oops.
#11@Ben B.: Good point. It’s why I don’t mind Luke Carlin in the lineup daily though he is hitting a buck eighty…at least he plays good defense.
Yeah, I mean three positions that you expect to get good offensive production out of – third base, catcher, and left field —all three have been below average by position – yet a guy that can fill two of the three, Chase Headley hasn’t got the call yet to fill. A bit puzzling to say the least.
Above average OBP % (with the Petco handicap/alibi) doesn’t mean a whole lot if your offense can’t score knock them in.
#14@JP: Catcher is not a position a team expects to get good offensive production out of. Not unless your catcher is Russell Martin.
Catcher and shortstop are the most important defensive positions. Those are the spots that teams have historically played defensive specialists. After those positions, center field and second base are the next most important.
#16@Kevin: Of course, I am expecting Pads catchers to hit like Johnny Bench (or even like Benito Santiago) and that is really not reasonable.
The Chase watch, is over.

9: Okay, pointless question…
When a pitcher is throwing home to try and catch a runner stealing home, does that pitch go towards the pitch count?
Common sense in that situation says that it wouldn’t. That it clearly was the pitcher trying to throw out a runner. But there’s so much grey area in baseball sometimes that there’s usually more definition to the rules than just “common sense”.
Question is, who gets released to make room for Headley? PMac?
#20@LaMar: I would bet on Huber.
#14@JP: We’ve had above average production out of both left field and third base. And catcher is the position you expect the least offensive production out of, so I don’t even know where you’re going with that.
#16@Kevin: The position adjustments are catcher (+10.5), then shortstop/center field (+5.25), then second base/third base (0), then left field/right field/pinch hitter (-5.25), then first base (-10.5), then designated hitter (-15.75).
#20@LaMar: McAnulty has been one of our better hitters this year. I’ll be shocked if they cut him.
#22@Richard Wade: Please excuse my ignorance. What is position adjustment?
Did something happen to Hairston? He was listed in the starting lineup for the U-T, and now he’s gone.
This is going to be a long game if every out they make turns into a highlight.
Hopefully it just means we’re hitting the ball hard.
Hairston was scratched because he hyper-extended something
the messiah will be here shortly :-p
#20@LaMar: I would guess the fact that Huber wasn’t even penciled in to start against the lefties the past two days (before Hairston’s injury) suggests he’s the one taking a hike. Unless Hairston goes on the DL now with his hyper-extended something.
That’s a good idea. Walk two of the first three batters. Usually a recipe for success…
Baek taking lessons from yesterday’s bullpen crew…
I prefer the Josh Banks “approach to pitching without good stuff” of throwing strikes and working ahead to the Cha Seung Baek approach of nibbling and getting into lots of three ball counts.
Suppose Huber knows he’s low man on the totem pole?
#31@Ben B.: I prefer the Cliff Lee “approach to pitching” of throwing 3 balls in the left-hand batter’s box and letting the ump call them strikes.
Miami CF and Padres draft pick Blake Tekkote just ripped a 2-run homer to right in their opener of the College World Series
Of course, after we all ragged on Baek, he retires 13 in a row….
Hopefully we can get a rally going to get a lead the bullpen can’t blow.
Baek did a nice job rallying after the first. He’s still not a very good pitcher, but if he can avoid walks he’ll be serviceable. I hope Black goes to the bullpen for the seventh though.
#36@Ben B.: That strategy certainly didn’t work out very well yesterday…
But I’ll take the quality start and get him out of there before he turns back into a pumpkin.
Looks like we’ll get yet another lead-off double that doesn’t go anywhere…
Another decent start for Baek but of course the Padres aren’t generally going to put runs on the board for he or anyone else.
16 in-a-row for Baek. Let’s score some runs!
Dogs lost 12-7, DBacks down 4-2 in the fifth…
Gerut with the bomb!!!
Keep it going boys…
For some reason Gerut is getting a better swing on tough lefties now then when he was 5 years and two knee surgeries ago.
He plays everyday now as far as I am concerned.
And EGon, Giles and Adrian go down on seven pitches combined…
#43@JP: Gerut’s numbers (265/336/428) are approaching Cameron’s career averages (250/339/445). I’d take that for the rest of the year.
Doesn’t appear to have the speed, but also doesn’t strike out twice as much as he walks.
#43@JP: Presumably Harriston sits with Headley in left when he gets here?
I don’t see any point in bringing Headley up if he isn’t playing almost every day.
If a .300 average is the threshold number that essentially equates to a “good to very good” BA then what is a “good to very good’ OPS ? Is it .800 or around there ? Sorry to burden you all with the neo (nouveau) stats novice inquiry but I am at work and cannot research at the moment.
Simply checking scores and seeing what my friends at DS are saying !
Bell back for the ninth? He only threw 8 pitches.
I know how Turbine Dude feels some days…
#46@Sean Callahan: It sure looks that way doesn’t it.
#47@JP: If 350 is good (not great) OBA and 450 is good (not great) SLG, 800 would seem reasonable. There are better stat guys then me, but they all seem to have something better to do today..
C’mon we can’t get to Joe Borowski ? Pads need this game !
C’mon PMAC ! How about a late innings knock when it counts !
#51@JP: We ALWAYS make mediocre pitchers look like Cy Young (or in this case, Trevor Hoffman)…
#18@Field39: Just heard the good news. Hope this kid can live up to everyones expectations. Lookinf forward to hollerin’ at the young ‘un. Anybody thought up or heard any good nicknames for CH yet?
I’m surprised Bud’s letting Carlin hit here…
I know you usually don’t bat for a catcher but it’s Luke Carlin.
Carlin is perhaps as bad a major league hitter as you will see but his defense will keep him hanging around for a few years.
#55@Sean Callahan: If you wern’t going to hit for Carlin, it was bad idea to let Greene steal.
DBacks now down 10-2 after 6.
We shouldn’t lose any ground today, but let’s try to gain some.
What were the odds of PMac getting Greene home from 1st?
I don’t think Greene stealing made much difference, other than that PMac might not have seen good pitches. The odds of PMac hitting a double were probably about the same as Carlin getting a single.
Aghhhhh, thought we gave up another one armed dinger…Whew
Bell gives up the first hit since the first inning.
#60@Sean Callahan: A point I hadn’t thought of at the time. The Tribe essentially says “thanks” when Khalil steals 2nd because pitching around PMAC is what they wanted as Carlin is that bad offensively.
Checking in…..Gotta love Bell in the chili cheese retro uni. Celebrating my wedding anniversary. Gotta head back to the beautiful wife…..GO PADRES!!!
YES!!!!
Ok, Gerut can lead-off with another dinger…
10 hits vs. 3? We need to finish these bast@rds. Alright, so my wife let me post another one….Black Angus being delivered right now. Second place is not far away!!!
Bell with 5Ks in 2IP.
He’s Baaaaacckkk!
OK, maybe Edgar….
That’s a start – if Giles and Adrian can’t get it done, we’re hosed…
I was just going to say I hope Giles doesn’t double, because they’ll walk Adrian…
Clark’s chance to put the hurt on Cleveland…
Hit it hard and deep!
OK Kouz – you hit it hard and deep!
C’mon Kooze, be smart now.
Great at-bat by Clark to foul off the high ones and work the walk.
MOTHER YEAHHHHHHHFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF
That was smart! SWEEEEEET!
KOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ
DONG!!!DONG!!!DONG!!!DONG!!!DONG!!!DONG!!!DONG!!!DONG!!!DONG!!!DONG!!!DONG!!!DONG!!!DONG!!!DONG!!!DONG!!!DONG!!!DONG!!!DONG!!!DONG!!!DONG!!!DONG!!!DONG!!!DONG!!!DONG!!!DONG!!!DONG!!!DONG!!!DONG!!!DONG!!!DONG!!!DONG!!!DONG!!!DONG!!!DONG!!!DONG!!!DONG!!!DONG!!!DONG!!!DONG!!!DONG!!!DONG!!!DONG!!!DONG!!!DONG!!!DONG!!!DONG!!!DONG!!!DONG!!!DONG!!!DONG!!!DONG!!!DONG!!!DONG!!!DONG!!!DONG!!!DONG!!!DONG!!!DONG!!!DONG!!!DONG!!!DONG!!!DONG!!!DONG!!!DONG!!!DONG!!!DONG!!!DONG!!!
#74@130tom330: Does that qualify?
A little deja vu for Cleveland fans – Kouz hitting a grand slam.
Who pitches the bottom of the tenth?
#73@Sean Callahan: Was that hard and deep enough for you?
(Hard and deep?!?! We gotta come up with a better adjective combo….)
We needed this one. CC Sabathia has struggled this year so we have a decent chance to take this series.
Looking at the bullpen ERAs doesn’t give you great amounts of warm fuzzies…
I’d go with Hoffman even though its not a save situation. But Corey it is.
#50@Sean Callahan: I would go with .850 or so.
#80@Sean Callahan: How sweet it it:)
#81@Lance Richardson: It worked didn’t it?
You come up with a better suggestion and I’ll start using it.
Ehh, it IS! : )
#86@Sean Callahan: that kooz went hard n deep
Is Luigi in there with him? ROTFLOL! Thats too funny
Way to sell out there Jody. Nice try bud
#82@JP: He’s been quite good of late. He had two terrible outings at the beginning of the season.
Well done boys! Put that in your REALLY annoying drum and pound it!
Woo hoo! Way to come back boys.
Baek figured out how to throw strikes and get guys out, the offense chipped away and Kouz dealt the death blow.
Let’s take the series tomorrow!
Victory!!!
I’d say we gave it to them Indians “hard and deep”!!!
Ducksnorts.com…blogging the Padres, AND homoeroticism, since 1997. Not that there’s anything wrong with that…
#94@Lance Richardson: Since my URL got eaten and Geoff’s busy, Google your home run call and look at the Wikipedia entry half way down.
Yours is just as bad as mine!
Headley’s been called up.
#95@Sean Callahan: Mine’s worse, but I’ve got tenure!
#97@Lance Richardson: Damn!
#54@130tom330: “Chase On-Base”? Haha. Nah, there’s gotta be a better nickname. But hopefully he lives up to it
#28@Ben B.: AP game story storys clarifies that Hairston’s “something” is his elbow …
OF Scott Hairston was scratched from the lineup due to a hyperextended left elbow. He is day-to-day.
I turned on the Stanford CWS baseball game today in time to watch Padre draftee Erik Davis pitch … ug … the best news is that he wears uni #19 … the bad new is that his pitching was stunningly wild and ineffective … Stanford won, which means they’ll play at least 2 more games … which I’ll bet makes it likely Davis will get at least 1 more appearance …
#54@130tom330: Blazing Saddles references perhaps?
#47@JP: Depending on how you choose to look at it, the .300 of OPS is roughly .850. OPS is kinda crappy, though. You’re better off looking at as far as simple rate stats go (2*OBP+SLG)/3 where the league average is .357 this year and the .300 equivalent of it would be about .410.
Giants just lost, to go with losses by the Dodgers and Diamondbacks.
The Padres are now in third, one game behind the Dodgers and 6.5 behind the Diamondbacks.
Loved the uni’s today …

#19@Steve from Boston: I’ve watched the video of Omar’s steal home and I’m pretty sure I see the pitcher step off the rubber, so his throw home is not a pitch. If it were a pitch, and the catcher step’d up like that, then the batter could simply swing and hit the catcher and get catcher’s interference … so it’s key for the pitcher to step off the rubber.
Antonelli with another 2-hit game … Germano with a decent start … for AAA Portland …

… whodathunkit???
* Pitching match-ups in NY appear to be ~
Rasner v Wolf
Pettite v Peavy
Chamberlain v Banks (what a thrill for Josh Banks).
* Yet another QS for a Padres starter .
* What is the Padres record with Carlin behind the plate anyway ?
* If the Padres continue to play better ball and are in this thing in July and August will they make a move/trade to actually upgrade the bullpen (ie-pick up a veteran arm for the pen?). Lets face it–now that guys like Gerut and Egon are proving to not only NOT embarrass but actually perform well, the only legitimate concern now for 2008 seems to be the middle relief –not sure I want to go to war in the dog days with Adams, Che Guevara, Corey,Hampson and Meredith as the guys.
#108@jp: -The Padres are 11-5 in games where Carlin is the primary catcher
-Maybe that reliever we need could come from within: Clay Hensley is healthy and starting to throw well again. He did a great job in relief for us back in 2005 giving 48 innings of 1.70 ERA.
#109@Brett: I don’t feel comfortable with Clay Hensley as the option but then again I didn’t feel so good with Jody Gerut roaming centerfield on a regular basis either.
If we can get out of this road trip alive then we have a nice homestand ahead against some beatable teams in the Twins, Tigers and Mariners.
I am pinching myself…..are we really in this race ? I am thinking that 84-78 now will win the division …so we still have to play some knock out baseball (53-39) to win it but not inconcievable.
The biggest comebacks in Padres history as far as bad starts was the 1988 Padres which started 21-36 and finished 83-78 so I have been comparing this teams climb to respectablity with that teams. At this point, the 1988 Padres were 30-40 after 70 games.
#110@jp: Hensley gave us two above average years before his bad one last year where he was hurt. If he is healthy, I think he can be an asset, not just a mop-up.
Also, I was curious and looked at Barrett’s game logs with the Padres. In games where he was the primary catcher last year the team went 10-21. However, this year the team is 8-7. It doesn’t necessarily mean mean anything but its interesting to look at. I’m not sure any one player (besides the pitcher) can have that much of an impact on the team’s record in days he plays.
#110@jp: Not sure that the bullpen will be a major issue.
Hoffman is Hoffman.
Bell is excellent.
Adams: 3.29 ERA with a 9.88 K rate
Corey: 3.12 ERA with the Padres
Meredith is puzzling, but he is not going anywhere.
Hensley, Cameron and Estes could all join the bullpen, replacing Hampson, Guevara and probably Corey.
When Young comes back, Baek can leave the rotation.
It could be a really nice staff 1 to 12.
#113@Kevin: I agree 100%. Once we get everyone back, I think the pitching staff as a whole will be a strength. Then if we can just get some production out of Khalil and the catching position we should be in good shape.
From Elias Sports Bureau:
Kevin Kouzmanoff’s grand-slam homer capped a five-run 10th inning as the Padres took an 8-3 decision in Cleveland. No Padres player had connected for an extra-inning grand-slam from the team’s birth in 1969 until Aug. 4, 1990, when Joe Carter hit one off Rick Mahler in Cincinnati. But starting with that one, the Padres have had five extra-inning grand-slams since 1990, which ties the Mariners for the most by any major-league team over that span.
#113@Kevin: You guys always err on the side of optimism which is good, makes for an more enjoyable season but Hensley, Cameron (shaky control) and Estes (never worked out of pen) hardly pacify my fears. But lets face it, we only need one or two of all of these guys off of this scrap heap to step up and we will probably be o.k.
Really small sampling with Adams, though I like his stuff and Corey is a journeyman who has never really showed consistency over anything close to a full mlb season.
Watching the game right now as I followed the game live on Yahoo (had to work the night shift).
Gerut got robbed in the 1st inning or he would have had a 4 for 5 night.
Is not Kouzmanoff’s grand slam not a long out at Petco or what (or does it even make it to the track ?). I had no idea how much of a joke Progressive Field truly is as far as cheap homeruns. It seems worse than Great America B. in Cincy
Stand at home plate in Jacobs Field in Cleveland and it seems as if you could reach over the right-field fence by merely extending your arm – Buster Olney
When Gerut starts turning on hard throwing 3/4 lefties with authority then you kind of wonder if anything is possible…..
re: 54 and 99. Chase Headley = Golden Boy or GB
