I would point out that the Reds have gotten off to a poor start and are pulling up the rear in their division, looking up even at the lowly Pittsburgh Pirates, but the truth is, I’d kill to be in their position right now.

Forget winning, just stay safe out there…

Between this season and last, Adrian Gonzalez has appeared in 209 games. Over that same span, Mike Adams, Josh Banks, Luke Carlin, Bryan Corey, Shawn Estes, Jody Gerut, Edgar Gonzalez, Sean Henn, Justin Huber, Wil Ledezma, Paul McAnulty, Colt Morton, and Jared Wells (13 of tonight’s 25 man roster) have combined to appear in 220.

Might as well call us AAA San Diego.

When it can’t get any worse, it can’t get any worse. I know the limitations of our new call-ups but the dynamic has at least changed drastically. I can’t possibly be upset with these moves because again, it can’t get any worse.

#1@Bryan: Stay Class AAA, San Diego.

I’m not insinuating I’m upset because obviously these moves are a product of unforseen injuries. I’m just pointing out that this is a roster full of fringe major leaguers at this point.

I don’t know if I can handle another injury. Last night punished more emotions than I knew I had. What a frightening night. I am afraid that regardless of injuries or not, we just don’t have much to build on yet. I will be taking draft day off again to watch it and I hope I am not disappointed…but I should know better.

I’m not ready to give up on Hairston. He went the other way for a nice little single in his 1st at bat. I think he picks it up this season and proves his keep. He has some speed and decent power and still fairly young.

Chipper went 2-for-4 with an RBI. He is hitting .412.

Iguchi single, steal, goes to third on error. Giles single. Gonzalez home run. Three runs, all with two outs.

Good reaction to having the top two pitchers and the starting catcher go down: Pissed.

Carlin can’t hit a lick but he is markedly better defensively than Bard. Especially in the area of framing pitches. Not to mention his cannon arm. He might not be a bad backup in the coming years.

Portland Beavers are a fun team to track. They hit like crazy and thus are never out of a game. Ambres collects three more hits tonight.

Might as well open the bin and pour the lot out and do some needed player evaluation. Sometimes a year like this is a blessing for this reason. I can see tonight why the Pads let 30 year oldMike Adams stuck around on reserve list for 2+ years and not do much of anything – the guy has decent stuff.

#41@Kelly in SD: Adams has been not been healthy for 2 years and just returned so his Port. work may not be indicative of his value if healthy. BTW, he has had a year of good work in the majors a couple of years back (2003 or 2004 Milwaukee). We shall see, certainly more Mike Adams types fizzle out than make it all the way back by adding consistent value over a season or two.

  56. Posted May 22, 2008 at 10:03 pm | Permalink

#55@LynchMob: Beavers win … I listed to the last couple of batters on internet radio … apparently Bass opened the 9th, up 6-4 with a pair of HBPs … yikes! Then with bases loaded and one out, batter rips a line drive that Myrow dives and catches, and then he gets up and dives to first base to double up the runner on 1st … ball game. So, Myrow can play some D … and Bass isn’t “mr. automatic” in the 9th :-)

Sorry LynchMob — the call ups from Portland surprised me a bit, correct me if I’m wrong but is it safe to say that none of the three : Adams, Wells or Banks knew it was coming. None of them have been lights out or anything close to major league level efficiency but oh well, why not ? One guy who does intrigue me a bit now on that Portland roster is Edwin Moreno, so I am kind of tracking him now.

Antonelli sure draws a lot of walks. Even on the 0-fer nights he still seems to at least get a free pass.

One has to wonder if maybe he should be a little more agressive early in the count.

Just got back from the game and a bit of bar tab. Hick!

Wow. What a night? Didn’t start well, actually. We hit the pub and I had two beers before first pitch – a first. We looked at the drizzles outside and I mentioned that balls aren’t leaving the park tonight. Boy, was I wrong. Really glad, I had those beers by the time Griffey hit one out to the beach. Got another beer and yup, mopped a little. The thing was even with the 2 run HR given up by Wolf, he was pitching well and the Padres were working the count on Harang. My friend ended up saying Harang was being harangued by the Padres. Tee..hee…hee….

Man, the place rocked when Iguchi stole that base and ended up at 3rd only to be driven in by OG. The crowd exploded with roars at El Hombre’s HR. Wow.
Am I glad I was wrong about the balls leaving the park. And then Mike Adams came in to shut the door. That was about as much fun as I had in the ballpark and all things considered, it was a great night for Padres fans.

Whew! Must go to sleep now. Hick!

  63. Posted May 22, 2008 at 10:54 pm | Permalink

#38@Kevin: This was actually a slick move by Black. By sending Wolf out to start the inning, he forced the Reds to burn a pinch-hitter. The pitcher’s spot was due to lead off, but right-handed hitting David Ross came off the bench to bat. Then Black brought in Mike Adams, and Cincy countered by sending Scott Hatteberg up in place of Ross.

#59@JP: I agree with you … I can’t believe any of the 3 weren’t shocked by the call up … which means our expectations should be low … I don’t know Edwin Moreno, I’ll keep my eyes and ears open (when I read MadFriars and/or the Beaver’s Blog @ Oregonian).
