Greetings from Petco, gang… is DS slow or is it the wireless I’m “stealing” from the pressbox?
May 21, 2008 at 7:14 pm
decent first inning… a K, a double play ball they stayed out of by starting the runner and a weak pop up. We can deal wit that.
May 21, 2008 at 7:16 pm
#1@Rich Campbell: Hey, Rich. Greetings from my living room.
May 21, 2008 at 7:17 pm
#1@Rich Campbell: Probably both.
May 21, 2008 at 7:18 pm
Gerut starts us off with a single… and then barely gets back on an attempted pick off from the plate… is it a hopeful sign that in a year when everything is going wrong, he got back in time?
May 21, 2008 at 7:20 pm
grrrr… spoke too soon. That looked more like this year has…
May 21, 2008 at 7:20 pm
Iguchi GIDP in the first. Deja vu…
May 21, 2008 at 7:23 pm
OG spanked that ball…. too bad it was just foul. He is on a tear the likes of which we have rarely seen from him in a Padre uniform.
May 21, 2008 at 7:25 pm
There will be no sneaking the cheese past Adrian.
May 21, 2008 at 7:26 pm
A-GONE!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Right over by the beach!
May 21, 2008 at 7:26 pm
Not much doubt about that one… nice shot, Adrian
May 21, 2008 at 7:26 pm
#8@Rich Campbell: He is seeing the ball extremely well.
May 21, 2008 at 7:29 pm
He may have made it anyway as the requisite representative from the Padres, but Adrian is playing like an All-Star
May 21, 2008 at 7:32 pm
Adrian will be the All Star this year, what with Peavy hurting…
May 21, 2008 at 7:34 pm
OG got a great jump on that ball.
May 21, 2008 at 7:41 pm
The Padres should bat their pitcher 8th and Bard ninth. It would reduce the number of double plays he could ground into, plus it would be something new and different.
May 21, 2008 at 7:41 pm
Shrek should’ve knocked him arse over kettle… a man is standing there double clutching on second, you need to take him out!
May 21, 2008 at 7:42 pm
Flashback -
TEXAS MANAGER RON WASHINGTON AND DESIGNATED HITTER MILTON BRADLEY WERE EJECTED BY HOME PLATE UMPIRE JEFF NELSON IN THE TOP OF THE SECOND INNING FOR ARGUING BALLS AND STRIKES.
May 21, 2008 at 7:44 pm
Keep the faith guys… closing the laptop to conserve power to write later…
May 21, 2008 at 7:46 pm
#12@Geoff Young: Not to be a downer, but while he’s hitting the ball with good power, hasn’t his average dropped like 30 points or something over the past few weeks…
May 21, 2008 at 7:51 pm
CY just took one hard for the team. Damn CY and the team don’t need this.
May 21, 2008 at 7:52 pm
Yikes, that was scary.
May 21, 2008 at 7:53 pm
#20@Marsh:
Date/BA/Slug
May 08: 0.307/0.550
May 20: 0.269/0.511
The drop in slugging percentage (0.039) is almost entirely due to the drop in batting average (0.038), thus his power has stayed pretty good.
May 21, 2008 at 7:54 pm
Man, I came home just in time for that gruesome play.
May 21, 2008 at 7:55 pm
#20@Marsh: He’s hitting .393/.469 /.500 over the past 15 games.
I really, really hope CY is okay. That was horrible.
May 21, 2008 at 7:56 pm
Explanation for those of us out of tv range, please?
May 21, 2008 at 7:57 pm
#25@Geoff Young:
How? See post 23
I didn’t see the CY play. Geeze, I hope he’s okay.
May 21, 2008 at 7:59 pm
So, Tony Clark is good for something!
May 21, 2008 at 8:02 pm
My hatred of Pujols grows by the second. Geez, I hope Bard is okay.
May 21, 2008 at 8:02 pm
Pujols has now taken out two of the Padres players.
May 21, 2008 at 8:03 pm
#26@michael: Pujols hit a line drive back to the box that knocked CY out of the game. Then he took out Bard on a play at the plate that knocked him out of the game. Clean play, but still…
May 21, 2008 at 8:03 pm
#30@Kevin: In one at-bat!
May 21, 2008 at 8:04 pm
#27@Marsh:
Okay folks, I’m a moron. Sorry Geoff. I thought that we were talking about Agone!
Geesh, Bard’s out too. Wow. How many times in major league history has an entire battery left the game injured during the same inning?
May 21, 2008 at 8:04 pm
You know I’m not really big on hitting people intentionaly but I think Pujols needs one in the ribs his next AB.
May 21, 2008 at 8:05 pm
Bard’s gone for awhile folks. Knee was bent back at a bad angle. Tough Luck. Hope Barrett is ready to roll. Otherwise its a platoon of Luke Carlin and Shawn Wooten.
May 21, 2008 at 8:05 pm
#33@Marsh:
BY THE SAME GUY!
May 21, 2008 at 8:06 pm
#34@Steve C: C’mon. How is Pujols, in any way, in the wrong on either play ?
May 21, 2008 at 8:07 pm
#31@Geoff Young: Thanks for the info…I think. Jesus Johnson! What the hell did we do to the Baseball Gods????
May 21, 2008 at 8:09 pm
#34@Steve C: I would agree if everthing had been intentional. However Pujols is one of the nicer guys in MLB. I wouldn’t touch him.
May 21, 2008 at 8:10 pm
#37@JP: Doesn’t matter…
May 21, 2008 at 8:10 pm
Who do we have to sacrifice to appease the baseball gods? Where’s Mark Bellhorn????
May 21, 2008 at 8:10 pm
In a hotel in LA….watching Lakers come back on the Spurs. Gonna get on MLBTV right now. Sounds like Pujols and his steroid looking body is killing us. I hope he’s not on the juice but he’s pretty darn big for a 20 something. Imagine when he’s in his 30’s. He could be bigger than Mo Vaughn.
No disrespect to Albert…hope we never hear he’s on roids.
May 21, 2008 at 8:10 pm
#37@JP: As much as I can’t stand Pujols, he did nothing wrong there. Just dumb luck.
May 21, 2008 at 8:14 pm
That play at the plate probably will take Bard out for the rest of the season.
May 21, 2008 at 8:15 pm
#40@Steve C: That, imo, is a horrible attitude. Let’s hit someone with a potentially injurious object because, through complete coincidence, he happened to hit a ball up the middle injuring a pitcher and then slid, apparently cleanly, in and injured the catcher? That is just so wrong.
May 21, 2008 at 8:15 pm
Back on for a moment… the C.Y. play was bad… not just the sight, the sound. Especially after I glanced back at Matty V. for confirmation and he motioned that it him him square in the face. I was hoping the glove was the softer sound there.
The Bard play is just wild. A battery taken out by one player in a third of an inning? In what amounts to a single at bat?It may have happened before, but I’ll bet not more than once.
May 21, 2008 at 8:15 pm
Pujols looked genuinely concerned while CY was sitting on the mound. And I want to hate the guy, too, but c’mon.
I’m more upset about Padres relievers setting the record for most inherited runners allowed to score. This is ridiculous.
May 21, 2008 at 8:16 pm
#45@Pat: but its right to hit a player if he hits 3 HR’s against your team?
May 21, 2008 at 8:17 pm
#44@Turbine Dude:
are you kidding? I didn’t see……just reading comments here. That bad?
May 21, 2008 at 8:19 pm
#46@Rich Campbell: Rich could you tell where the blood was coming from? ie. nose, or a possible cut above the eye. Not to sound morbid, but it might help us understand the extent of CY’s injury.
May 21, 2008 at 8:21 pm
#49@Oside Jon: His leg got bent in a way that it was never designed to go. Looked awful.
May 21, 2008 at 8:21 pm
#47@Stephen: Yeah, Pujols and Adrian were praying together after the play. There was nothing even remotely resembling intent.
May 21, 2008 at 8:22 pm
#50@Turbine Dude: Looked like it was coming from his nose.
May 21, 2008 at 8:24 pm
#50@Turbine Dude: The St. Louis feed on DirecTV stayed close on Young longer than Ch. 4. Not sure exactly where it hit Young, but his shirt was basically red when he left.
May 21, 2008 at 8:24 pm
It looked to me like it was coming from his brow/forehead just above his nose.
May 21, 2008 at 8:27 pm
Trying to change the subject, but Cedric Hunter hit another HR tonight.
May 21, 2008 at 8:27 pm
I’m not even sure how much Pujols touched Bard. It certainly wasn’t a physical play.
Sometimes the leg goes bad on its own. My knee has certainly done that.
May 21, 2008 at 8:28 pm
#50@Turbine Dude:
The quick glance I had made it look like blood was coming from just above his nose.
May 21, 2008 at 8:29 pm
Sarcastic (hopefully, but probably not) round of applause from the home town crowd for Pujols.
May 21, 2008 at 8:30 pm
Bud, it’s OK to use another reliever if one is not getting it done.
May 21, 2008 at 8:31 pm
I’d almost say it can’t get any worse but then again I was thinking that a few weeks ago. At least the game’s still on the line and the Pads have time to ‘try to come back’ (stop laughing!!!).
As for CY, just gotta pray he’s ok. From what y’all described almost sounds like what happened to Cameron with a ball instead of another person
May 21, 2008 at 8:33 pm
Nasal fracture and laceration.
May 21, 2008 at 8:33 pm
CY has a nasal fracture and laceration; he’s at Green Hospital.
May 21, 2008 at 8:35 pm
Sportscenter just showed Cy/Pujols incident.
Cy’s cut was dead between his eyes. He looked cognizant of everything that was going on around him (he was lucid).
To Pujol’s credit, he immediately came over to check on CY and then he prayed with Adrian.
Oh, and then he broke Josh Bard’s ankle….
May 21, 2008 at 8:36 pm
Broken nose and a cut. I wonder how long that’ll put him on the DL or if he’ll have to wear the clear plastic mask a la the NBA.
May 21, 2008 at 8:38 pm
62 & 63 - he’s going to be out for a while no? At least a month
May 21, 2008 at 8:38 pm
#64@Marsh: Do you know for a fact Bards ankle is broken?
May 21, 2008 at 8:45 pm
#48@Steve C: When did I say that?
May 21, 2008 at 8:45 pm
I’m sorry, has Bud just totally thrown in the towel at this point? Did Thatcher just bat with a runner on third?
May 21, 2008 at 8:46 pm
#68@Pat: Never said you did but it happens quite often. But I have calmed since then and have realized the errors of my ways…
May 21, 2008 at 8:47 pm
#70@Steve C: That’s what I’m here for.
May 21, 2008 at 8:48 pm
i think hte team has just given up, they just know that no matter what, something else will go down that’ll screw everything up
May 21, 2008 at 8:50 pm
#69@MJS: Yep, gotta have some pitchers available for tomorrow night’s game. I think surviving this one is the priority right now.
May 21, 2008 at 8:51 pm
#69@MJS: #72@Loren: I’ve given up on this game, but not the team.
May 21, 2008 at 8:53 pm
#73@Geoff Young: I’m a bit suprised that they did not just go straight to Germano.
May 21, 2008 at 8:59 pm
Carlin!
May 21, 2008 at 8:59 pm
Man….I can’t believe this happened while I was away from the TV.!!!!! Please keep the info coming……Hope everyone is OK physically.
May 21, 2008 at 9:02 pm
Carlin was Gary Carter-like on that play.
May 21, 2008 at 9:04 pm
#78@Kevin: That kid is gonna be worth some bucks one of these days in the near future.
May 21, 2008 at 9:06 pm
OK, thanks Adrian. We’re a little closer.
May 21, 2008 at 9:08 pm
Wow!
May 21, 2008 at 9:11 pm
I think the players are playing hard tonight. That doesn’t mean Black will manage the bullpen well, though.
May 21, 2008 at 9:11 pm
What a catch by Schumaker. The Pads can’t buy a break.
May 21, 2008 at 9:11 pm
#79@Turbine Dude: No offense to Bard, but let’s get a good look at Carlin.
May 21, 2008 at 9:13 pm
Another shattered Maple Death Spear.
May 21, 2008 at 9:13 pm
Gonzalez: .189/.286/.324 at home, .321/.347/.634 on the road.
Go figure.
That’s before tonight.
May 21, 2008 at 9:18 pm
#75@Steve C: Good call on Germano.
#78@Kevin: Yeah, Carlin doesn’t look like any kind of prospect to me, but he’s playing like someone who wants to stay in the big leagues. It’s nice to see that kind of effort.
Also, that was a spectacular play by Schumaker to rob Kouz last inning.
May 21, 2008 at 9:20 pm
Black should just stay out there and pitch.
May 21, 2008 at 9:21 pm
The announcers need to shut-up… That was the worst tag at home plate I’ve ever seen. Why try to tag the runner’s body…. put your mitt in front of the plate, damnit! That reach for the runner’s body cost us the out.
I need to stop caring about this team… ugh!
May 21, 2008 at 9:22 pm
#87@Geoff Young: I didn’t know he wasn’t a prospect at all.
May 21, 2008 at 9:23 pm
Why does Thatcher get to play.
May 21, 2008 at 9:23 pm
Oh, one more thing…. I’m real happy they brought Thatcher back.
May 21, 2008 at 9:25 pm
What a wacky game. This nightmare won’t be forgotten by the Padres faithful for a long time.
May 21, 2008 at 9:25 pm
#90@Kevin: Carlin doesn’t hit.
May 21, 2008 at 9:26 pm
#74@Turbine Dude: Bud Black gave up on this game when he let Thatcher hit with a runner on 3rd. And then left him in to walk a few more Cardinal hitters.
May 21, 2008 at 9:28 pm
That 2 runs are on Harry. Even listening to the radio, Thatcher sounded bad with his command and I heard that Germano was warming up already.
I can’t believe Harry let Thatcher to face Molina after he failed to retire Duncan.
Maybe a Harry being a lefty himself felt a sympathy for Joe T. Bad decision and he should be called on this one and have somebody rap his left hand. Bad manager.
May 21, 2008 at 9:31 pm
Where is Barrett at in his rehab assignment? Is he big league ready for this weekend?
May 21, 2008 at 9:32 pm
Hate to say it but I place a good amount of the blame for this loss on Cla Meredith - He need to man up and give us a decent performance in the face of crisis (CY’s injury). He stunk in a high leverage situation in terms of this teams psyche. Oh well, so goes 2008 so far.
May 21, 2008 at 9:35 pm
#95@Geoff B: Thatcher is a human white flag, but I don’t understand why Black lets him pitch.
May 21, 2008 at 9:35 pm
I hope CY and Shakespeare are OK. Looks like more Carlin which is alright. Nobody else is hitting either. At least Carlin is playing with some spirit. This team just sounds dead and uninspired on the radio even.
That missed tag that bad?
May 21, 2008 at 9:36 pm
#98@JP: Meredith is on the list for sure, but there is plenty of blame to go around.
May 21, 2008 at 9:36 pm
Where is Justin Hampson in his rehab? He bailed the Padres out at least a couple of times last season.
May 21, 2008 at 9:37 pm
#96@Didi: Thatcher gave up three runs. They are all on Black.
May 21, 2008 at 9:37 pm
#97@Geoff B: XX 1090 said this afternoon that he would be sent to Portland for the weekend and could possibly be in the line-up by early next week.
#98@JP: Oh, an ally! Thank God. I’ve been saying that all year! I think everyone in here knows by now how I feel about side arm pitchers.
May 21, 2008 at 9:38 pm
Any clue what the ejection was about? I didn’t see what started the argument, although it was clear something was being said from the bench.
May 21, 2008 at 9:39 pm
Maybe we could move Germano to the outfield. He is certainly hitting better than most of the AAA players out there: PMac, Gerut, Hairston, Huber, etc. He’s batting over .400!
May 21, 2008 at 9:39 pm
I applaud SD4 for not replaying either of those injuries tonight.
May 21, 2008 at 9:40 pm
At least Webb lost tonight.
May 21, 2008 at 9:40 pm
Chipper went 1-for-2 with a homer and two walks. He is hitting .410.
May 21, 2008 at 9:41 pm
7 walks by Padres pitching!
May 21, 2008 at 9:41 pm
#105@Rich Campbell: Rich, it was a high pitch called for a strike and I think tonight’s events stressed Wally to the point he went looking for an argument.
May 21, 2008 at 9:42 pm
#107@Turbine Dude: I’m not sure. The plays are newsworthy.
May 21, 2008 at 9:42 pm
Barrett will be in San Diego tomorrow to work out before going to Lake Elsinore on Friday (www.padres.com), though that might change given tonight’s events.
May 21, 2008 at 9:45 pm
#113@Corey Brock: I was just parroting what Philly Billy said at around 6:40 tonight on the radio. I tend to trust Padres.com more than Billy.
May 21, 2008 at 9:45 pm
109: Still early in the season but man, what a hitter.
I missed the third run there. And now that I know Harry left Thatcher hit with a runner on 3rd, yeah, it’s all on Harry. What a terrible management of the game.
What are all those arms in the bullpen for? Expecting another 22 inning game, are we? OK, I got to stop. It’s getting more and more irritating the more I think about it.
Oh, the Aztecs won 1-0 to stave off elimination.
May 21, 2008 at 9:49 pm
113: Corey, why do you stop blogging? Must be getting too depressing, huh? We understand. If you wonder what it was like for Padres’ fans in 97, 99-02, this is it but longer. Can we get some funny stories from being on the road? Please? Thanks.
