decent first inning… a K, a double play ball they stayed out of by starting the runner and a weak pop up. We can deal wit that.

Gerut starts us off with a single… and then barely gets back on an attempted pick off from the plate… is it a hopeful sign that in a year when everything is going wrong, he got back in time?

The Padres should bat their pitcher 8th and Bard ninth. It would reduce the number of double plays he could ground into, plus it would be something new and different.

The drop in slugging percentage (0.039) is almost entirely due to the drop in batting average (0.038), thus his power has stayed pretty good.

#40@Steve C: That, imo, is a horrible attitude. Let’s hit someone with a potentially injurious object because, through complete coincidence, he happened to hit a ball up the middle injuring a pitcher and then slid, apparently cleanly, in and injured the catcher? That is just so wrong.

  46. Posted May 21, 2008 at 8:15 pm | Permalink

Back on for a moment… the C.Y. play was bad… not just the sight, the sound. Especially after I glanced back at Matty V. for confirmation and he motioned that it him him square in the face. I was hoping the glove was the softer sound there.

The Bard play is just wild. A battery taken out by one player in a third of an inning? In what amounts to a single at bat?It may have happened before, but I’ll bet not more than once.

That 2 runs are on Harry. Even listening to the radio, Thatcher sounded bad with his command and I heard that Germano was warming up already.
I can’t believe Harry let Thatcher to face Molina after he failed to retire Duncan.
Maybe a Harry being a lefty himself felt a sympathy for Joe T. Bad decision and he should be called on this one and have somebody rap his left hand. Bad manager.

Hate to say it but I place a good amount of the blame for this loss on Cla Meredith – He need to man up and give us a decent performance in the face of crisis (CY’s injury). He stunk in a high leverage situation in terms of this teams psyche. Oh well, so goes 2008 so far.

#118@Rich Campbell: BTW, I wasn’t aware they would let you bring your laptop into the park. I’m going to do that next time we attend. Just how many open wi-fi connections did you find there?

OK, Matty just said Bard sprained his left ankle. Earlier he reported that it was a compound fracture.

OK, just to finish at .500, the Pads need to go 65-49 for the rest of the season. That’s .570 after going .354 through the first 48 games. And as of tonite they do not have #1 or #2 pitchers or #1 or #2 catchers. I’m waving the white flag tonite. Sadly its only May 21.

Didi: Let me tell you about an 0-11 road trip I took covering the Mariners in 2006 …

Finally, we can move on to the post game show (which should be interesting) and I can go to bed.

124: Ouch. Do tell, Corey. It can’t be worse than that one season in which the Padres reeled in 14 wins in a row and still managed to be under .500 (it seems to me) and still far from contending.

125: G’night. Sleep tight, don’t the loss bites too much.

#124@Corey Brock: He asked for *funny* stories … not *horror* stories (like what’s happening in real life right before our eyes). We need *humor* … now more than ever!

    #107@Turbine Dude:

I don’t like being told what’s appropriate for me to watch. Matty V was irritating me tonight, although I probably couldn’t put forth a convincing argument as to why.

This pic (complements of the Friar John Blog) of KK’s HR on Tuesday night *will* cheer you up!

#128@Stephen: I totally agree with you on that as long as it wasn’t accessable to little kids. I pay for HBO, Cinemax, etc. However, any kid who has irresponsible parents will allow their kids access to carnage, so there has to be some accountability somewhere, no?

Scanning the standings, it looks like the Pads have the worst run differential in baseball, and easily so. (-74)

#128@Stephen: And by the way, most of us don’t watch baseball in the same fashion that some kids today watch movies like “Jack Ass.”

I’ve brought my laptop to the Park several times… Usually when I’m behind on an editing assignment. I had the Verizon modem with me, but why use it if I can pick up the Pressbox? Mind you, I can’t pick it up just anywhere in the ballpark, but when in Toyota Terrace, I usually can.

I’m happy CY is alright. That was scary. And many of you may know that I’m far from Pujols biggest fan, but I have to say that he was very concerned about Chris and I have to respect that.
