No one watching this week’s attempt at 350?

Haha I live on the east coast and still barely woke up in time.

#1@St. Oops: Yeah, it’s pretty quiet in here. Everyone must be at church praying that we can at least be .500 this year.

Crabbe got lucky with that one.

    #2@Brett: Haha, same here.

Nice to see us not waste a lead-off double.

Also nice to see the Marlins making some more errors. Lovely crash and burn for Crabbe.

Any word on Greene? Just got in here.

We can tear at Edmonds all we want but you can’t argue w/the fact that he is a consumate team player. I have seen him sacrifice bunt twice this year to perfection and he did a great job hitting to the right side to get Hairston over to third (which resulted in a run).

I just noticed GY’s latest poll. I see I’m not the only person in here that is anti-Edmonds.

#7@JP: He’s done well this series, which worries me. I was just thinking to myself that we need a “I hope to h*#& not.” option for the latest poll.

    Ugh Uggla.

  10. Turbine Dude Says:

#7@JP: I can’t argue that. However, I don’t think he is a good fit for this particular team. The same was said about Silent L last year.

  11. Turbine Dude Says:

OT: I’m going to be selfish here and say that I hope we get the win today, but not for Mad Dog. I want him to get 350 at home so I can be at the game. :)

  12. JP Says:

#10@Turbine Dude: I think he is indeed “done” but find it admirable that he still does the little things needed to win rather than always muscle up and try to hit a bomb to save his job.

    #10@Turbine Dude:

Is he hitting to the right side intentionally or is his timing so messed up that’s about all he can do? His “hit” chart shows a lot of 4-3 putouts.

If the team isn’t fast, it doesn’t get faster by being reckless on the base paths. That CS hurts.

  15. Brett Says:

I wasn’t that thrilled with Edmonds ground out to second to advance the runner. He was up 3-1 in the count. Try to drive it..

    Current score: 0
  16. JP Says:

#15@Brett Well, he could have muscled up and hit a lazy fly to center. I was thrilled to see a grounder to second.

    Current score: 0
  17. JP Says:

Ahead in the count, Edmonds hit a lazy fly to center in the 4th. I wish he had done that in the 1st.

  18. Tom Waits Says:

The bigger question is why Edmonds is even starting against a LHP, especially a hard thrower. It should be Hairston in CF, Huber in LF, unless Huber isn’t healthy.

Jacobs loves pitches on the outside corner.

  19. Matt Says:

    Do not pitch to Uggla!

  20. JP Says:

#18@Tom Waits: Agree w/you. Maybe because Huber has an OPS of .523 in about 130 mlb plate appearances. 8 walks in 131 at bats w/1 homerun. Uggh !!!
I’d rather see what Ambres can do. Ambres at least has some speed (some power) and can play center field.

  21. St. Oops Says:

Now that’s an ugly stat: Padres have been retired in 3 or fewer pitches 10 times today.

    Current score: 0
  22. Tom Waits Says:

#20@JP: If the Padres cared about his major league at-bats, they’d have never traded for him. He’s a career 878 OPS hitter in the minors.

I wouldn’t mind using Ambres and Gerut, but with Ambres you’re talking about a player who also has uninspiring major league numbers and a worse record in the minors despite being older than Huber.

  23. Brett Says:

Ugh… well that’s that. That error leading to the fifth fun really killed us. I wish Maddux would just get to 350 already. They left him in too long against Philly and here today so he could have a shot at 350.

Also, Who do you think makes the start on Thursday? Germano, Ledezma, Estes, or Rusch?

    I’m really hoping its Ledezma.

This ump crew stinks. Don’t think Buddy got his money’s worth - hell, it’s about time he went out and made a stink about something.

  26. Tom Waits Says:

Like I said, Rusch, Jacobs likes the pitch out there.

I expect Glendon has punched his ticket out of here. They can swap roles for Ledezma and Germano, drop Rusch, and maybe bring up a stick.

Edmonds runs like he’s got a elephant on his back. That ball was very catchable. Another brick in the wall.

Edmonds with another terrible play in CF giving up that rbi double. Too bad Black’s not around to see it.

  29. JP Says:

#26@Tom Waits: Sounds like a go. Rusch is gone. Ledezma will probably be the guy for the 5th spot.

How long do the Padres let Edmonds make a fool of himself out there?

  31. Brett Says:

I hope they put in Morton to catch this inning. No point in leaving Bard out there

Hey K.T - How about a backup catcher ? Bard looks like he just came back from ‘Nam.

  35. jay Says:

    Fun with math:
Take out our 4-2 start, assume a loss today, that’s 8-18 over the last 26 games, or a .308 winning percentage, apply to the rest of the games (130) = 40 more wins + 12 current wins = 52-110 season.

I don’t think we have a 110 loss team, but just to give some context to how bad this has been.

At least the play has taken some pressure off of Hoffman.

  36. JP Says:

16% of the season (8-18) . It’s a bad streak but it is only 26 games. I have watched enough baseball to know that things can change. K.T’s interseasonal moves have usually worked in the past. Let’s see what he does now. He needs to act now though -maybe not to win the West but to avoid an embarrassing season. My first priority - If they can (even at the price of a prospect) , the Pads need to go out of the organization for a proven outfielder and a veteran -stop gap- catcher. We clearly see that Bard is overwhelmed and breaking down already. Morton, Hundley or Carlin are not sufficient to prevent disaster.

    16% of the season (8-18)

My point is that we have been suffering 110 loss baseball, not that we are actually going to end up near 110 games. Not a particularly profound point. But this has been killing me, and it somehow helps to project how horrible it is.

In other words, the sample size is sufficent. Any moves made going forward that are not aimed directly at improving this team in 09, are cosmetic at best.

Face it, guys. We are not a good team right now and probably not going to get much better. Time to sit the declining vets and play the youngsters, if we have any. That way a 110-lose season can will be productive.

  40. Tom Waits Says:

#36@JP: Morton’s every bit as skilled as most veteran stop gap catchers. Estrada, Casanova, LoDuca, Ross, Barajas, they’re all in the 600 or lower OPS range. In some cases much lower. It’s not Morton’s fault Black won’t use him. There’s no point to trading for a good catcher for the rest of this year unless we can be sure that other improvements will also happen.

#38@Field39: Yep, they have too many holes to worry about fixing them for 2008. If they improve organically enough to make things interesting, fine, but they should not be papering over their gaps. They have some attractive veterans. Wouldn’t bother me one bit if they started moving them sooner rather than later.

  41. SDSUBaseball Says:

#40@Tom Waits: I think Hundley could be better than Morton. Honestly, I don’t see the point of getting a catcher. Bard is good ehough. He has had a rough start, but I dont think he is “overwelmed” or “breaking down”

    Current score: 0
  42. Tom Waits Says:

#41@SDSUBaseball: Hundley may be better than Morton, and he’s in-house already. It’s fine to switch them. It makes less sense to trade for somebody, unless you’re getting a good deal on someone you control for a while.

Bard’s a much better catcher when he’s not being treated like he’s on a chain gang. He’s moving in slow motion. Morton’s had 12 whole at-bats since being promoted, 3 in the last week when Bard has looked overworked.

    - Gerut with HR #5 today + 3 BBs in 5 PA … seems like if Edmonds is cut soon, then Gerut has earned the callup (slide Hairston to CF, play Gerut in LF)

    - Chase with 4 singles today … BA now up to .264

    - I assume the wind was blowing out at The Diamond today … Storm wins 13-11 (on 20 hits) …

    - Cedric went 5-for-6 with 2 doubles

    - Sogard went 3-for-5 … news flash: NO DOUBLES :-)

    - Latos with a short 3 IP inning … 5 H + 1 BB … 3 Ks … 2 ERs … ERA now at 2.70 …

Went to the Lake Elsinore game today, got a glimpse of the future. Cedric Hunter looked good, had 5 hits, good line drive power, athletic and covered center pretty well, decent arm. And he’s only 20, could see him in San Diego in 2010?

Sam Carter hit his second Grand Slam in 8 days, and is second in the league with 29 RBI’s. He’s 6-4 210, has some power, hadn’t really followed him too much before.

#42@Tom Waits: No I totally agree. He needs his time off, but I think he is a fine starter. Morton is fine this year, I just think Hundley will turn out to be the better player.
