And it’s pretty clear that trend started when Ramon left…although I wouldn’t have paid him $9M per, either.
Let’s go Jake, need to take this series…
April 17, 2008 at 6:38 pm
Is Ramon still playing?
April 17, 2008 at 6:39 pm
TC starting at 1B and hitting cleanup tonight
April 17, 2008 at 6:39 pm
Also, Huer in LF and Hairston in CF
April 17, 2008 at 7:08 pm
Wicked nasty pitch to get Tula~
April 17, 2008 at 7:10 pm
Nice first inning for Peavy
April 17, 2008 at 7:10 pm
Breaking ball is looking good tonight.
April 17, 2008 at 7:12 pm
#7@Geoff Young: Geoff, still no book. Do you have a contact number I can call to check on my order?
April 17, 2008 at 7:16 pm
#8@OkinawaPadres: Maybe the boat got blown off course on it’s way to Okinawa and ended up in the Philipines.
April 17, 2008 at 7:17 pm
#9@Turbine Dude: Sorry, I digress (former Navy).
April 17, 2008 at 7:19 pm
#9@Turbine Dude: I may have to take some libo down there and get it
April 17, 2008 at 7:23 pm
#8@OkinawaPadres: Did you get my email? It has the tracking information. Book is out of the publisher’s hands and with USPS. Let me know if you want a PDF version in the meantime, and I’ll send one your way.
April 17, 2008 at 7:24 pm
#8@OkinawaPadres: Seriously, though. Check the http://www.lulu.com site and see if there is a number.
April 17, 2008 at 7:26 pm
#12@Geoff Young: I didn’t get the e-mail, no. My e-mail address is wolstenholm@triton.ocn.ne.jp or wolstenholmjw@yahoo.com
April 17, 2008 at 7:29 pm
Nice double play to end that half.
April 17, 2008 at 7:32 pm
#14@OkinawaPadres: Now I understand. I sent you emails on 4/12, 4/13, & 4/15. Will try again.
April 17, 2008 at 7:37 pm
Nice AB from Bardo
April 17, 2008 at 7:40 pm
For those of you not getting video: That was an outstanding AB for Jake. Broke his bat on that poke to right.
April 17, 2008 at 7:40 pm
#14@OkinawaPadres: Where in Okinawa are you? I was stationed with the Marines twice at Camp Schwab.
April 17, 2008 at 7:41 pm
OG with a can of corn…uhg
April 17, 2008 at 7:42 pm
#19@Schlom: Foster. Contractor for the Marines (was active duty 95-03)
April 17, 2008 at 7:42 pm
Can we trade for Adam Dunn? I want to see some home runs and guys swinging with a purpose at the plate! I’ve seen way too many weak swings with fewer than two strikes.
April 17, 2008 at 7:45 pm
Thinking ahead here: Tomorrow, CY is starting in Phoenix against the extremely hot hitting DBacks. That might be an ugly one for us…
April 17, 2008 at 7:47 pm
I love seeing Peavy on his game pounding the strikezone
April 17, 2008 at 7:50 pm
Two pitches two outs. Not exactly making him work.
April 17, 2008 at 7:52 pm
#23@OkinawaPadres: Heard on the BP show before the game: CY has been pushed back a day in favor of Maddux, who will go on his normal rest tomorrow night. According to Bud, CY had what was termed a “stiff elbow” after coming out of his last start against the Dodgers. Doesn’t seem to be anything concerning the team, but they felt an extra day of rest was in order. I’m not sure I like the sound of this - the phrase “stiff elbow” doesn’t sound too good to me.
April 17, 2008 at 7:52 pm
Kind of a “b-squad” game with jake pitching. He looks filthy again. he has been pounding the zone all season and he has looked great. Less pitches and still making guys look silly with K’s
April 17, 2008 at 7:52 pm
Man, talk about a rubber match!
April 17, 2008 at 7:53 pm

April 17, 2008 at 7:54 pm
You guys know anything about Josh Alley? Hit a three run bomb for San Antonio tonight and is hitting .467 (don’t know how many ABs)
April 17, 2008 at 7:54 pm
#21@OkinawaPadres: How do you like living there? I didn’t really spent any time away from the bases — we’d occasionally go down to Foster but spent most of my time at the beach at Schwab when we were on the island. Good times….
April 17, 2008 at 7:55 pm
#26@Jefe: On XX 1090 this afternoon, Buddy said it works out well for both guys because Mad Dog likes to stay on his 5 day and CY just wanted the extra day. Interpretate that however you want.
April 17, 2008 at 7:58 pm
26: Just makes he hope ( i mean hope) that Prior can come back and be even 90% of his old self.
April 17, 2008 at 8:01 pm
If you are just going to completely ignore the baserunner like Peavy did right there, why not just go from the windup? It’s not like Peavy gave Bard any chance at all to throw the runner out there. Holliday took a walking lead and started running as even before Peavy lifted his leg.
Didn’t matter though.
April 17, 2008 at 8:02 pm
#26@Jefe: I like our chances with Maddux/Wolf/Germano against the DBacks. All three of those guys have been great so far this year.
Nice K from Peavy!!!
April 17, 2008 at 8:02 pm
#31@Schlom: I love it over here. I’ve got two little ones and I’d much rather raise them here than in the states!!!
April 17, 2008 at 8:03 pm
6 K’s through 4. A few dirty pitches to Atkins there
April 17, 2008 at 8:03 pm
#32@Turbine Dude: So are they skipping him or pushing him back to game two?
April 17, 2008 at 8:07 pm
#38@OkinawaPadres: CY wanted the extra day of rest for a ‘tender’ elbow (Black said it wasn’t a concern, but why push it) and Dog wanted to pitch tommorow.
April 17, 2008 at 8:07 pm
If your gonna strike out, I guess 8 pitches is the way to do it.
April 17, 2008 at 8:07 pm
Hairston is showing a disturbing affinity for pitches about a foot outside tonight.
April 17, 2008 at 8:08 pm
#39@Turbine Dude: gotcha
April 17, 2008 at 8:08 pm
#35@OkinawaPadres: I’ll like our chances against the Dbacks better if we can get the bats going. Hairston looks like he doesn’t have a clue at the plate right now, and outside of Giles, nobody is swinging the bat well right now (with the possible exception of Jake, but he’s not going to face the snakes).
April 17, 2008 at 8:08 pm
#38@OkinawaPadres: They are just swapping the 2 and 3 positions for now.
April 17, 2008 at 8:10 pm
The offense has been really bad this year. It’s tough to watch. No power, some bad approaches.
April 17, 2008 at 8:11 pm
Man, we are making Francis look better than Jake
April 17, 2008 at 8:11 pm
#33@SDSUBaseball:
90% seems very optimistic. I will be happy with 70% of his old form. Just make it justifiable to take the spot in the rotation and I will feel like it was a good buy to bring him in. Of course his old form would be a bonus though but I want to be realistic
April 17, 2008 at 8:14 pm
Jake is filthy tonight. That was a wicked pitch to get Hawpe.
April 17, 2008 at 8:14 pm
Peavy is hot! We better get him some run support!
April 17, 2008 at 8:14 pm
45: At least Jake is fun to watch…
April 17, 2008 at 8:14 pm
I got a bad feeling I’m gonna be sleep walking at work tommorow…
April 17, 2008 at 8:16 pm
Justin Germano is fourth in the league: 1.35
Peavy is fifth (through the fourth): 1.38
Wolf is sixth: 1.42
Maddux is ninth: 2.00
Germano and Wolf are a combined 1-1 in six starts.
Peavy and Maddux are 5-0 in six starts.
April 17, 2008 at 8:17 pm
70 pitches through five for Peavy. Should get seven or eight innings out of him tonight
April 17, 2008 at 8:17 pm
#48@Jefe: The whole sequence was nasty. You don’t see Hawpe look that lost at the plate very often.
April 17, 2008 at 8:18 pm
#52@Kevin: I think I read that our starters have a 2.20 ERA (best in baseball) after yesterday’s game. Pretty good concidering CY got rough up in his last start
April 17, 2008 at 8:18 pm
#52@Kevin:
That’s ERA of course.
April 17, 2008 at 8:19 pm
#49@OkinawaPadres: OT: Just curious, are you fluent in Japanese?
April 17, 2008 at 8:19 pm
#55@OkinawaPadres:
Hoffman and the hitters — not so much.
April 17, 2008 at 8:20 pm
#57@Turbine Dude: Not yet, but I’m working on it. I can talk to my four year old and girls at a bar
April 17, 2008 at 8:22 pm
Actually, Matty. They jokingly call that the Nevin Eye. (talking about the batter’s eye at Petco).
April 17, 2008 at 8:24 pm
If they are going to play all these night games, at Petco. They might want to consider installing some lights and giving the hitters a chance.
April 17, 2008 at 8:28 pm
GY, how do you put your pic in that upper right corner of a post?
April 17, 2008 at 8:28 pm
Didn’t know the XML files were updated by mlb real-time … here’s Peavy’s pitch selection tonight, according to PITCHf/x:
FB: 38
Slider: 17
Curve: 5
Cutter: 3
Change: 1
FS: 3 - (I’m not sure what they are - maybe sinkers?)
3 unknown pitches — looks like the camera messed up there.
April 17, 2008 at 8:28 pm
Gooch got him!!!!
April 17, 2008 at 8:29 pm
Tremendous throw and tag on that…
April 17, 2008 at 8:29 pm
Nice throw Bardo! Nailed Taveras with room to spare.
April 17, 2008 at 8:29 pm
Looking at the replay, he got him on the shoulder.
April 17, 2008 at 8:29 pm
Holy crap. Beautiful throw by Bard and tag by Iguchi.
April 17, 2008 at 8:29 pm
another CS!! Sweet!
April 17, 2008 at 8:30 pm
Take that, NL baserunners.
April 17, 2008 at 8:30 pm
#62@Turbine Dude: Go to http://gravatar.com/ and upload a photo. It’s free.
April 17, 2008 at 8:31 pm
79 pitches through six. Peavy may be able to go the distance again. If we can score some runs…
April 17, 2008 at 8:31 pm
So Peavy completely ignores Holliday yet slide steps when Tavares is the baserunner.
The situations were much different though, one out and Tulowitzki up when Tavares ran and two out and Hawpe up when Holliday stole. It makes sense that you’d concentrate more on the runner and less on the batter in the first case and vice-versa in the second.
April 17, 2008 at 8:31 pm
#71@Geoff Young: Thanks
April 17, 2008 at 8:32 pm
OK, 2-3-4 coming up. If Francis is going to keep living on the outside corner tonight, let’s start taking him the other way. No more groundballs to Tulo or weak pop flies please.
April 17, 2008 at 8:32 pm
#63@MB: How do you check the number and type of pitches?
April 17, 2008 at 8:32 pm
Peavy now with a team-leading 1.29 ERA. Third in the league.
April 17, 2008 at 8:34 pm
#72@OkinawaPadres:
Go. The. Distance.
April 17, 2008 at 8:37 pm
#76@Schlom: You have to load the PITCHf/x data into a spreadsheet. here’s a great explanation of how to do it, if you’re interested: http://webusers.npl.uiuc.edu/~.....acking.htm
Then mlb has a classification system that’s right in there. So you can just sort by pitch type and count ‘em up or do a number of things (avg. speed, location, etc.). It’s pretty simple once you get the hang of it, but let me know if you have any questions (if you ever decide to try it out, of course).
April 17, 2008 at 8:37 pm
DirecTV seems to be putting up the TV feeds from each city for Padres games. Good job, DirecTV.
April 17, 2008 at 8:38 pm
I love those one hit ABs…well when it’s the opponent doing it
April 17, 2008 at 8:39 pm
Another great sequence there by Jake! Gets Holliday who was WAY behind the fastball.
April 17, 2008 at 8:41 pm
I wish Jake would check up on Holliday once in a while.
April 17, 2008 at 8:42 pm
91 pitches through seven innings
April 17, 2008 at 8:42 pm
OK GY, I did the Avatar thing and put a photo on it. Now to get it to show up on my posts?
April 17, 2008 at 8:43 pm
Peavy ERA: 1.24
April 17, 2008 at 8:44 pm
The offense is wasting a great outing by Jake.
April 17, 2008 at 8:48 pm
OT: I sent Bob Scanllon (?) an e-mail and got this response:
Hey Rick,
There is no question that Chrissy would distract any bullpen in baseball. I
think you should email Padres, and I will talk with Chrissy.
Thanks for your email and for watching the show!

#87@Field39:
Of course, the Rockies are doing the same.
April 17, 2008 at 8:51 pm
Francis isn’t in Jake’s league, yet he looks like Cy Young tonight.
April 17, 2008 at 8:52 pm
We need a point.
April 17, 2008 at 8:53 pm
#88@Turbine Dude:
Is your name Rick Schroder? That’s awesome.
April 17, 2008 at 8:53 pm
I can’t believe how intense Jake is on the mound./src
April 17, 2008 at 8:54 pm
He had Barmes dead at second.
April 17, 2008 at 8:54 pm
#85@Turbine Dude: Should show up automagically.
April 17, 2008 at 8:54 pm
#94@Ben B.: Sure did. Let’s hope we don’t end up regretting that.
April 17, 2008 at 8:55 pm
#79@MB: Is there a list with pitcher ID’s anywhere?
April 17, 2008 at 8:56 pm
#92@Kevin: Not the one you are thinking of.
April 17, 2008 at 8:56 pm
That was strike three to Podsednik. Not a good time for a blown call by the ump.
April 17, 2008 at 8:56 pm
Wow, Scott Podsednik gets a call? Why?
April 17, 2008 at 8:57 pm
Walk withstanding, I’m glad our number one option off the bench isn’t Pods
April 17, 2008 at 8:57 pm
#95@Geoff Young: Just confirmed the photo. It may take a moment. Pic of me standing in front of the Tony G statue.
April 17, 2008 at 8:58 pm
May have to select a better photo for the blog.
April 17, 2008 at 8:58 pm
Clutch K!!!
April 17, 2008 at 8:59 pm
Is there some sort of rule that a pitch has to be caught cleanly to be a strike? Bard was crossed up on a fastball that he thought was going to be a slider so he muffed the catch but the pitch was pretty much down the middle yet was called a ball.
April 17, 2008 at 9:01 pm
#101@OkinawaPadres: I thought that too. People here complained about Geoff Blum but he’s a way better hitter then Scott Podsednik. It’s not good when a guy that should really be a pinch-runner is the first guy off the bench.
April 17, 2008 at 9:01 pm
Peavy’s gone seven or more innings in three of his first four starts this year.
April 17, 2008 at 9:01 pm
