I love Greg Maddux’s attitude. Dude took one for the team on Friday, throwing 113 pitches to give a beleaguered bullpen some rest following the 22-inning contest that finished earlier in the morning, in a different city. Not that you want to see a guy surrender nine runs in a game, and not that Maddux needs my approval, but that was solid.
Padres try to avoid the sweep in Phoenix on Sunday. Insert your own “Randy” joke here…

Hey everyone…a little rain here in VA won’t stop baseball in AZ…wooohooo
Randy Johnson would be the #1 starter on my All Ugly team…with or without facial hair.
April 20, 2008 at 1:20 pm
Not a lot watching today or what?
April 20, 2008 at 1:21 pm
Kouz really is having a nice start…he looks good at the plate and is putting good wood on the ball. Still want to see more power, but I really think that will come.
April 20, 2008 at 1:22 pm
#3@Coronado Mike:
Nice Avatar Mike!
April 20, 2008 at 1:27 pm
#4@Jeremy: Thanks…that was a photo of me after eating some really spicy Thai food in Detroit
April 20, 2008 at 1:36 pm
There is a textbook KG K.
April 20, 2008 at 1:39 pm
#1@Coronado Mike: When it comes to ugly, there is Willie McGee, then there is everyone else.
April 20, 2008 at 1:43 pm
#7@Field39: Willie McGee did get slapped around a bit in the womb…
There is also the Captain of my All Ugly Team…Mickey Morandini
April 20, 2008 at 1:43 pm
That ball was stroked by Conner Jackson…he is 6-for-11 against us this weekend…wow.
April 20, 2008 at 1:44 pm
CoJack can hit thats for sure.
April 20, 2008 at 1:52 pm
#8@Coronado Mike: Discussing the all ugly team in late April, does not speak well of the 2008 season.
April 20, 2008 at 1:53 pm
Randy Wolf looks good so far today.
April 20, 2008 at 1:56 pm
Well, that was nice.
April 20, 2008 at 1:56 pm
AGon…way to go…and nice running Iggy
April 20, 2008 at 1:57 pm
#11@Field39: I talk about it regularly…I am fascinated with coming up with the best team of super ugly guys…
April 20, 2008 at 1:59 pm
15: Too bad Greg Oden doesnt play baseball…
April 20, 2008 at 2:01 pm
15: Actually KG could probably be an alternate on that team.
April 20, 2008 at 2:04 pm
#15@Coronado Mike:
I suppose it will take some clarification. Are we talking active players or the All Time Ugly Team?

April 20, 2008 at 2:11 pm
#18@KRS1: All-Time…
And SDSU, my mom thinks he is “brutally ugly” and should definately be a starter. I don’t go that far b/c so many women in SD seem to like him.
Back to IGD, how bad is it that we are talking about this during the game and so little talk about the game itself?
April 20, 2008 at 2:12 pm
Richard…that made me laugh…fantastic!
And nice play by Kouz!
April 20, 2008 at 2:15 pm
20: I probably agree with your mom… so does the girlfriend haha
Besides CoJack, Wolf has been dealing with this good line up very well. I have been pleasantly surprised with how good he has been.
April 20, 2008 at 2:19 pm
Wolf has really been a nice addition so far this season. If we fall out of it, he might be a good trade candidate in July…or a 3 year deal…
April 20, 2008 at 2:23 pm
23: It might actually be preferable to fall out of the race early, since this is in essence a rebuilding year, and being out early would allow the FO to move players more easily.
April 20, 2008 at 2:30 pm
KOOOOOZ
April 20, 2008 at 2:31 pm
Nice knock Kouz
April 20, 2008 at 2:31 pm
And the Pads take the lead on a tough play by Chris Burke…woohoo
April 20, 2008 at 2:31 pm
That was fortunate
April 20, 2008 at 2:33 pm
WHAT? A string of hits???
April 20, 2008 at 2:35 pm
#29@SDSUBaseball: Maybe don’t get used to it.
April 20, 2008 at 2:35 pm
#30@Richard Wade: Or maybe do?
April 20, 2008 at 2:35 pm
BOMB HUBER
April 20, 2008 at 2:35 pm
Justin says hello.
April 20, 2008 at 2:36 pm
Hey now! HUBER! 3 Run shot! I like this multi-hit inning stuff.
April 20, 2008 at 2:36 pm
I was just thinking that this would be a good time for his first bomb as a Padre
April 20, 2008 at 2:37 pm
#35@Coronado Mike: Good call.
April 20, 2008 at 2:37 pm
VIRGIN ISLANDS!!!
Stringing hits together like it ain’t noth’n.
April 20, 2008 at 2:38 pm
WE: 92%
And yet I don’t feel all that confident.
April 20, 2008 at 2:40 pm
What did that sign say? Our CY is better than your CY? I guess our LHP Randy is better than your LHP Randy?
April 20, 2008 at 2:41 pm
Nice to put up that crooked number…a 6 spot on the Big Ugly.
Nice job so far Pads.
April 20, 2008 at 2:41 pm
Nice Hairston… So this must be what hitting looks like?
April 20, 2008 at 2:42 pm
WE: 95%
Now, that’s a little more comfortable.
April 20, 2008 at 2:45 pm
42: Comfortable if Wolf can go 8 haha. 64 pitches so far…
April 20, 2008 at 2:50 pm
Dammit, my wife let me nap through most of this game. Glad to see we are up.
April 20, 2008 at 2:58 pm
“What we’ve got here…is a failure to communicate.”
April 20, 2008 at 2:58 pm
Kouz is really driving that ball well…and Upton/Byrnes are lucky they are not hurt after that collision…
And despite what Grace is saying on the DBacks telecast, unless it is set up otherwise, the CF has the call and if he calls that ball, JUp needs to pull off.
April 20, 2008 at 3:04 pm
46: You are right, but I would let Upton be the leader out there. Byrnes is too reckless.
April 20, 2008 at 3:05 pm
Ok…lets stop the bleeding here…We really don’t want to let AZ back in this game..
April 20, 2008 at 3:05 pm
#17@SDSUBaseball: Spicoli is dreamy.
April 20, 2008 at 3:07 pm
Oh crap.
April 20, 2008 at 3:07 pm
Why is Wolf still pitching? The first 2 balls that were smoked weren’t enough of a clue that he is finished?
April 20, 2008 at 3:07 pm
#46@Coronado Mike: If Grace calls one more thing “big league” I’m going to vomit.
April 20, 2008 at 3:08 pm
#47@SDSUBaseball:
To be honest with you I think if I was the D-Backs I would just nip any possible tension between Byrnes and Upton in the bud and ship Upton to the Padres in return for Glendon Rusch. Problem solved!
April 20, 2008 at 3:08 pm
I think letting Wolf pitch any more this inning is a huge mistake…
April 20, 2008 at 3:10 pm
#53@KRS1: Hell, they can have anybody who isn’t Peavy.
April 20, 2008 at 3:10 pm
53: Sounds like a fair deal haha.
51: Maybe no one is warmed up.
Good to se Owings K. As good of a hitter as he is, he is still a pitcher.
April 20, 2008 at 3:10 pm
#54@Mark O: I agree. He’s gonna screw up my h2h league team.
April 20, 2008 at 3:11 pm
#52@kj: Unless you’re in AZ you shouldn’t be stuck with the AZ announcers…
April 20, 2008 at 3:12 pm
#58@Mark O: Not in San Diego. So I’ve got to watch mlb.tv which only offers home TV
April 20, 2008 at 3:14 pm
#59@kj: Have they changed that? I used to get channel 4 on mlb.tv 2 seasons ago. It’s the best part of the mlb package on directv is that I get the channel 4 broadcasts..
April 20, 2008 at 3:15 pm
why were we playing concede the run there? There was only one out and the game is close. We used up all our offense for the day.
April 20, 2008 at 3:15 pm
#55@Richard Wade:
They can have any 2 players that are not named Peavy but alas they wouldn’t have any use for anyone not named Peavy on our roster or in our system would they. This team is pretty well set for a long time guys with the studs they have at basically every position we are pretty well screwed for the next 10 years if we don’t make some serious moves in the coming years.
April 20, 2008 at 3:17 pm
60: We get Ch. 4 when the Padres are at home. Otherwise it is gereally the home team. To be honest, the picture is better the the MLB extra innings package and I pay about $100 less so I am fine with putting up with the announcers.
April 20, 2008 at 3:17 pm
#61@SDSUBaseball: I would still think that an out is more important than that run at this point. If you play the infield in, it’s easier for them to get a single to make it a 1 run game….this way we’re still up 2. I think we stayed with Wolf too long in that inning..the bullpen should’ve been on alert when the inning started.
April 20, 2008 at 3:20 pm
62: I like he some Upton, but he is only one player. I dont know if I give away Adrian Gonzalez and CY (etc.) for one player. You fill one hole (CF) and open two others that were filled with very good players.
April 20, 2008 at 3:20 pm
Bell is fully rested, yet they went with Clay?
April 20, 2008 at 3:21 pm
How bout that moron picking up the ball on KG’s hit?
April 20, 2008 at 3:21 pm
#62@KRS1: Yeah, we’re not better too many places. First, third, and… maybe somewhere else is arguable at best.
April 20, 2008 at 3:22 pm
#66@Field39: Bell for the 8th right?
April 20, 2008 at 3:23 pm
64: With our offense and our ‘pen I dont know if it is the right call in THIS situation. I am not saying its always wrong to concede the run, just not sure if I liked the decision just now.
April 20, 2008 at 3:23 pm
#65@SDSUBaseball: You can make an argument for not making that deal, but I’m pretty sure I’d rather have Upton than Adrian and CY.
April 20, 2008 at 3:23 pm
I seriously love Matt and Mud. I know they were taking some flack from you guys the other day but I think those guys are great together.
April 20, 2008 at 3:23 pm
Bell definitely in the 8th, unless we score a few more here in the top half..
April 20, 2008 at 3:24 pm
#72@KRS1: I’m with you…I think they do a great job on the game. I seriously missed listening to them when I first moved away from SD.
April 20, 2008 at 3:24 pm
#72@KRS1: They’re what first attracted me to the Padres.
April 20, 2008 at 3:25 pm
KRS1…I am with you. After hearing so many others, those two are usually very enjoyable!
April 20, 2008 at 3:25 pm
Gotta love getting that runner on third w/less than 2 outs in.
April 20, 2008 at 3:25 pm
Good sac fly. We needed another insurance run.
April 20, 2008 at 3:26 pm
4-Run lead would mean that we probably won’t see Trevor…When does Ledezma get another shot?
April 20, 2008 at 3:26 pm
#72@KRS1: They’re pretty great. It’s especially obvious after having to listen to Quis.
April 20, 2008 at 3:28 pm
#74@Mark O: Early 2008 Rankings:
Matt and Mud-Excellent
Scully-Excellent, not as much intentional humor, way more unintentional humor
SF guys-Pretty good I think
.
.
.
Sutton and Grace (AZ)-Hair raisingly obnoxious, big league style.
April 20, 2008 at 3:29 pm
65: Ya thats a gut call I guess. But if the Padres dont fill those holes, then they are a worse team after the trade. We dont really have a #2 starter or a .300/.350/.500 30HR/100RBI hitter waiting in the farm system to fill those holes.
72: Agreed. After listening to a lot of others on mlb.tv its always fun to hear them.
April 20, 2008 at 3:30 pm
#80@Richard Wade:
Listening to Quis Is like pulling teeth!
April 20, 2008 at 3:30 pm
I still can’t stand Mark Grant.
April 20, 2008 at 3:31 pm
81: Scully kills me, I have to mute him everytime.
April 20, 2008 at 3:32 pm
#80@Richard Wade: How does Quis have a job?
April 20, 2008 at 3:33 pm
#85@SDSUBaseball: You don’t like hearing the same anecdote in the 1st, 5th, bottom of the 8th and top of the 9th?
April 20, 2008 at 3:35 pm
Also: I’m glad Channel 4 doesn’t do the 3rd reporter roaming the stands set up. Doesn’t the TV contract expire soon?
April 20, 2008 at 3:35 pm
87: Not after I heard it yesterday and 5 years ago.
April 20, 2008 at 3:36 pm
#82@SDSUBaseball: I’m pretty sure you trade two above average players for a guy with Hall of Fame talent any chance you get, but it’s a moot point anyway because nobody’s going to trade you a guy like Upton for a couple above average players.
April 20, 2008 at 3:37 pm
#86@SDSUBaseball: No clue. He must have been better than whoever else they considered, I guess.
April 20, 2008 at 3:40 pm
88: Doesnt Wisebarf and Chrissy Russo roam around and report during the game?
90: I wouldnt, but thats my opinion I guess.
April 20, 2008 at 3:41 pm
How is down the heart of the plate, just above the knees not a strike? It didn’t matter, but c’mon.
April 20, 2008 at 3:42 pm
#92@SDSUBaseball: Chrissy Russo can roam wherever she wants.
April 20, 2008 at 3:44 pm
84: I used to think that too.
April 20, 2008 at 3:45 pm
Alright all…so far I have enjoyed the game, but I am off to see Ben Stein’s new movie.
See y’all soon…
April 20, 2008 at 3:48 pm
#95@SDSUBaseball: Me, too. He grows on you.
#94@Kevin: Second that.
#96@Coronado Mike: You gonna review it on your blog?
April 20, 2008 at 3:48 pm
Here’s hoping these guys head to Houston and San Francisco, not the team from Friday and Saturday
April 20, 2008 at 3:49 pm
#97@Richard Wade: I am sure there will be something up there on Monday.
April 20, 2008 at 3:51 pm
Greene is so dreamy.
April 20, 2008 at 3:52 pm
#99@Coronado Mike: Good stuff.
April 20, 2008 at 3:53 pm
#94@Kevin: I used to think that too haha. She is starting to look a bit “used up”
April 20, 2008 at 3:54 pm
Holy crap. What a play.
April 20, 2008 at 3:55 pm
Go padres! Nice to see the bats wake up?
April 20, 2008 at 3:58 pm
#103@Richard Wade: Looked almost identical to Stephen Drew’s last night, except I think Drew actually threw the runner out. I think Greeney got a call there but still a beautiful play.
April 20, 2008 at 4:22 pm
#102@SDSUBaseball: I think she could be entering her prime. Not sure what her VORP is.
April 20, 2008 at 4:26 pm
#85@SDSUBaseball: I completely agree. I hate when we play the Dodgers because that’s the only time i’m stuck with the visiting announcers.
April 20, 2008 at 6:18 pm
#107@Mark O: I still think Vin Scully is the best.

Got a win. Test Avatar.
April 21, 2008 at 6:09 am
Allright, can we officially start the “Play Huber” mantra? After being buried on the bench for the whole season, he starts and goes 2 for five with a 3-run homer. Until the Pads can acquire a legitimate center fielder, why not platoon Hairston and Edmonds in center and play Huber for a couple weeks in left, just to see what they have. His minor league numbers suggest that he can hit a little bit - a .260 average and lots of Ks but legitimate power. San Diego doesn’t have another outfielder with legitimate power potential, so why not see if Huber is any kind of solution?
