IGD: Padres @ Diamondbacks (20 Apr 08)

Randy Wolf vs Randy Johnson

I love Greg Maddux’s attitude. Dude took one for the team on Friday, throwing 113 pitches to give a beleaguered bullpen some rest following the 22-inning contest that finished earlier in the morning, in a different city. Not that you want to see a guy surrender nine runs in a game, and not that Maddux needs my approval, but that was solid.

Padres try to avoid the sweep in Phoenix on Sunday. Insert your own “Randy” joke here…

Hey everyone…a little rain here in VA won’t stop baseball in AZ…wooohooo

Randy Johnson would be the #1 starter on my All Ugly team…with or without facial hair.

Kouz really is having a nice start…he looks good at the plate and is putting good wood on the ball. Still want to see more power, but I really think that will come.

And SDSU, my mom thinks he is “brutally ugly” and should definately be a starter. I don’t go that far b/c so many women in SD seem to like him.

Back to IGD, how bad is it that we are talking about this during the game and so little talk about the game itself?

Besides CoJack, Wolf has been dealing with this good line up very well. I have been pleasantly surprised with how good he has been.

Wolf has really been a nice addition so far this season. If we fall out of it, he might be a good trade candidate in July…or a 3 year deal…

  24. Posted April 20, 2008 at 2:23 pm | Permalink

23: It might actually be preferable to fall out of the race early, since this is in essence a rebuilding year, and being out early would allow the FO to move players more easily.

Kouz is really driving that ball well…and Upton/Byrnes are lucky they are not hurt after that collision…

And despite what Grace is saying on the DBacks telecast, unless it is set up otherwise, the CF has the call and if he calls that ball, JUp needs to pull off.

  61. SDSUBaseball
    Posted April 20, 2008 at 3:15 pm | Permalink

why were we playing concede the run there? There was only one out and the game is close. We used up all our offense for the day.

  62. Posted April 20, 2008 at 3:15 pm | Permalink

    #55@Richard Wade:

They can have any 2 players that are not named Peavy but alas they wouldn’t have any use for anyone not named Peavy on our roster or in our system would they. This team is pretty well set for a long time guys with the studs they have at basically every position we are pretty well screwed for the next 10 years if we don’t make some serious moves in the coming years.

  63. SDSUBaseball
    Posted April 20, 2008 at 3:17 pm | Permalink

60: We get Ch. 4 when the Padres are at home. Otherwise it is gereally the home team. To be honest, the picture is better the the MLB extra innings package and I pay about $100 less so I am fine with putting up with the announcers.

  64. Mark O
    Posted April 20, 2008 at 3:17 pm | Permalink

#61@SDSUBaseball: I would still think that an out is more important than that run at this point. If you play the infield in, it’s easier for them to get a single to make it a 1 run game….this way we’re still up 2. I think we stayed with Wolf too long in that inning..the bullpen should’ve been on alert when the inning started.

  65. SDSUBaseball
    Posted April 20, 2008 at 3:20 pm | Permalink

62: I like he some Upton, but he is only one player. I dont know if I give away Adrian Gonzalez and CY (etc.) for one player. You fill one hole (CF) and open two others that were filled with very good players.

  70. SDSUBaseball

64: With our offense and our ‘pen I dont know if it is the right call in THIS situation. I am not saying its always wrong to concede the run, just not sure if I liked the decision just now.

  71. Posted April 20, 2008 at 3:23 pm | Permalink

#65@SDSUBaseball: You can make an argument for not making that deal, but I’m pretty sure I’d rather have Upton than Adrian and CY.

Allright, can we officially start the “Play Huber” mantra? After being buried on the bench for the whole season, he starts and goes 2 for five with a 3-run homer. Until the Pads can acquire a legitimate center fielder, why not platoon Hairston and Edmonds in center and play Huber for a couple weeks in left, just to see what they have. His minor league numbers suggest that he can hit a little bit – a .260 average and lots of Ks but legitimate power. San Diego doesn’t have another outfielder with legitimate power potential, so why not see if Huber is any kind of solution?
