Fri, Mar 14, 2008by Geoff Young
Can we please get more reverb on the lead vocal? Game starts at 10 p.m. PT. Channel 4SD, XM 178.
Picking up where last year's version left off, the Ducksnorts 2008 Baseball Annual provides in-depth analysis of and commentary on the San Diego Padres. Get your copy today.
March 14, 2008 at 9:54 pm
Who’s the home team in China?
March 14, 2008 at 10:03 pm
I think the Padres are home tonight, and Dodgers are home on Saturday.
March 14, 2008 at 10:06 pm
2: Nice. So much for watching this game on network TV in LA. It’s the 10 o’clock news instead.
March 14, 2008 at 10:07 pm
Whoa, that is not a good looking field.
March 14, 2008 at 10:12 pm
They ever gonna get this thing underway?
March 14, 2008 at 10:13 pm
Strike one from Germano. And away we go.
March 14, 2008 at 10:15 pm
Matt & Mud are in rare form. It’s like watching MST3K.
March 14, 2008 at 10:16 pm
KCAL decided to drop the feed at the last minute. I hate living outside of SD County - and only 5 miles from the county line at that. At least I overpay for MLB.TV…
March 14, 2008 at 10:16 pm
It’s not on gameday audio?!?
March 14, 2008 at 10:17 pm
8: Stupid ass KCAL.
I love they saved that first pitch. Is that first pitch the closest anyone other than Trevor and Torre ever get to the HOF?
March 14, 2008 at 10:18 pm
never mind, I found it. You have to look under the sat games.
March 14, 2008 at 10:18 pm
This coverage is friggin’ hilarious. Sorry to those who can’t watch on 4SD.
March 14, 2008 at 10:19 pm
12: Damn, I’ve got it muted right now. Watching Obama on Countdown from earlier today trumps first MLB game in China.
March 14, 2008 at 10:21 pm
Robles taps weakly back to the mound. Big roar from the crowd. WTF?
March 14, 2008 at 10:21 pm
I wonder what they think about Led Zepp playing as Kouz came to the plate.
March 14, 2008 at 10:22 pm
At least the spectators know to go after the foul ball.
March 14, 2008 at 10:23 pm
“Kashmir” plays on the PA before Kouz comes to bat. I’m thinking you don’t hear a lot of Zeppelin in China.
Kouz strikes out.
March 14, 2008 at 10:23 pm
Boo. Kouz with the first K ever in China.
March 14, 2008 at 10:23 pm
GY, are you still over in Peoria? And who won the state-side game tonight?
March 14, 2008 at 10:26 pm
This coverage reminds me of watching games as a kid in the early ’70s. Crappy color and only a couple of cameras. LOL
March 14, 2008 at 10:26 pm
Hairston stays with a tough ball off the bat of Andruw.
March 14, 2008 at 10:27 pm
This commentary, as others have pointed out, is worth the price of admission alone.
March 14, 2008 at 10:27 pm
I guess KCAL dying isn’t the worst thing, at least I get the lyrical stylings of Matt and Mud…
And a 15-year minor leaguer with the first hit in the ballgame. Whatever.
March 14, 2008 at 10:27 pm
#19: No, I’m back in SD. Don’t know who won the stateside game.
March 14, 2008 at 10:28 pm
Dear Padres,
Please don’t embarass yourself in another country.
Your pal, and devoted fan,
Robby
March 14, 2008 at 10:29 pm
Nice
March 14, 2008 at 10:29 pm
Heads-up play by Hundley.
March 14, 2008 at 10:30 pm
24:I’m pretty sure we lost.
Nice play by Hundley, even better confusion by Matt & Mud.
March 14, 2008 at 10:30 pm
The random cheering is pretty hilarious.
March 14, 2008 at 10:31 pm
cheerleaders??
haha
March 14, 2008 at 10:31 pm
Matt speaks for us all: “Cheerleaders, yes!”
March 14, 2008 at 10:31 pm
#29: I wonder how they will react to a home run?
March 14, 2008 at 10:31 pm
Cheerleaders!
March 14, 2008 at 10:32 pm
“Cheerleaders!!! Yes!!!”
Matty V. never fails to amaze me…
March 14, 2008 at 10:32 pm
OMG, cheerleaders.
March 14, 2008 at 10:38 pm
This is pretty ridiculous, and highly entertaining.
March 14, 2008 at 10:38 pm
Hu with the first error ever in China!
March 14, 2008 at 10:38 pm
McFly
March 14, 2008 at 10:40 pm
#37: Hu made the error?
March 14, 2008 at 10:41 pm
And Venable strands the runner. Chan Ho looks pretty good, all things considered…
March 14, 2008 at 10:41 pm
Classic CBS Sports (circa 1972) with the camera behind the netting. #36, very entertaining.
March 14, 2008 at 10:42 pm
#41: It’s like Wide World of Sports. We just need the guy who totally eats it on the ski jump.
March 14, 2008 at 10:44 pm
George Lombard goes yard. A nation erupts.
March 14, 2008 at 10:44 pm
And it’s the groundball derby…
March 14, 2008 at 10:45 pm
George Lombard? WTF???
March 14, 2008 at 10:45 pm
#43 and splits the smog.
March 14, 2008 at 10:47 pm
How bout a replay?
How bout a Fresca?
March 14, 2008 at 10:47 pm
I can’t tell. Is that Joe West behind the plate?
March 14, 2008 at 10:49 pm
With that air quality, the Dodgers should feel right at home (no offense GY).
March 14, 2008 at 10:50 pm
48. I can’t find a gameday or a live box. Anyone?
March 14, 2008 at 10:51 pm
50: No help here, I’m watching SD4.
March 14, 2008 at 10:55 pm
I wonder how long Buddy will let Germano go…
March 14, 2008 at 10:57 pm
Man, I wish I could watch this one. Reading through this thread … it sounds quite hilarious.
March 14, 2008 at 10:57 pm
How the hell does Germano strike out three people in a row? I know its ST, but come on, its Justin Germano.
March 14, 2008 at 10:58 pm
54. He’s got the hook working tonight, and he’s getting the minor leaguers to chase it. That doesn’t explain Andruw or Kemp…maybe they just suck at life.
March 14, 2008 at 10:58 pm
Cheerleaders again! Woot!
March 14, 2008 at 10:59 pm
55: Good call.
March 14, 2008 at 10:59 pm
#50: Searching, not finding…
March 14, 2008 at 11:03 pm
Robby, I can lend you my daughter’s old pom-poms from high school.
March 14, 2008 at 11:03 pm
they have a box score on mlb.com but its listed as a 3/15 game because its 2 in ET
March 14, 2008 at 11:03 pm
Robby, I can lend you my daughter’s old pom-poms from high school.
March 14, 2008 at 11:05 pm
61: I’m not sure how much use I would have for them, but you are always more than welcome to make the donation.
March 14, 2008 at 11:06 pm
60. I looked there on the scoreboard page and it did not have a link or an updated linescore.
A-HA! It’s up not. Ted Barrett is behind the plate.
March 14, 2008 at 11:07 pm
63. *now
I’m an idiot.
March 14, 2008 at 11:07 pm
#60: Ah, good work. Here’s the box:
http://mlb.mlb.com/news/boxsco.....b_sdnmlb_1
March 14, 2008 at 11:08 pm
50: go look at the Sat scoreboard to listen to this game on gameday audio
March 14, 2008 at 11:09 pm
Wow! That’s was so little league.
March 14, 2008 at 11:09 pm
Padres score on a bad throw from catcher back to pitcher. Yeah, good luck explaining that to fans in China.
March 14, 2008 at 11:09 pm
Wow. Way to impress them with top-notch baseball guys.
March 14, 2008 at 11:09 pm
Oops! May shanked the throw. Shades of K-Rod in Oakland.
All square at 1.
March 14, 2008 at 11:10 pm
#63: Thanks Bryan.
March 14, 2008 at 11:11 pm
Just like Rube Baker in Major League 2.
March 14, 2008 at 11:12 pm
71. Thank Ian C., he found the box.
Don’t mind my late comments…looks like .TV is at least 15 seconds behind you guys.
March 14, 2008 at 11:13 pm
#72: Yeah, he should memorize the “Girls of Sptitzer” up-coming Playboy Edition! LOL.
March 14, 2008 at 11:16 pm
OT: Jim Wolf umpired the 7PM game today, the first time he’s been behind the plate with brother Randy on the hill:

March 14, 2008 at 11:16 pm
Come on Justin, settle down here. Get that ground ball.
March 14, 2008 at 11:18 pm
I admire Joe Torre for thumbing his nose at Geo. Steinbrenner.
March 14, 2008 at 11:22 pm
Bases loaded, no outs, not a good thing.
March 14, 2008 at 11:23 pm
Nice sequence to Lombard there.
March 14, 2008 at 11:24 pm
79. Word. Needs to do that again here.
March 14, 2008 at 11:24 pm
Nice DP to get out of that one!
March 14, 2008 at 11:24 pm
nice way to get out of that jam
March 14, 2008 at 11:24 pm
That worked out well. Line-drive double play to end the inning with a zero on the board.
March 14, 2008 at 11:25 pm
Nice DP! Justin gets (bailed) out of it.
March 14, 2008 at 11:25 pm
Nice work, Justin.
March 14, 2008 at 11:27 pm
Anybody else taking advantage of the ‘Business Man’s’ specials this season? I’ve scheduled my vacation days for them. 2 for 1 tix, nice.
March 14, 2008 at 11:28 pm
86: “Business Man’s Special”. That sounds like it should involve some Spitzer treatment.
March 14, 2008 at 11:29 pm
CHP’s been looking good all spring
March 14, 2008 at 11:29 pm
86. If only I didn’t have class on Thursdays…I might bail out, I never learn anything in college anyway.
March 14, 2008 at 11:31 pm
Same old Padres; even the minor leaguers aren’t hitting.
March 14, 2008 at 11:33 pm
I’m taking my father to the first one on the 3rd. Paid $47 for two Toyota Terrace 3rd base side. I get 3 weeks vac. a year and I think I’ve already devoted half of that to Padre games :).
March 14, 2008 at 11:34 pm
91: That’s a good call, sir.
I understand the sacrifice of vacation for baseball. I’ll be supporting our boys in both Seattle and Arizona this year.
March 14, 2008 at 11:34 pm
43 … Not many Eugene Emeralds actually make it to play in MLB … I moved to Oregon in late ‘94, so the ‘95 Ems were my first chance to watch Short-Season A-ball … the star of that team? George Lombard (it was a Braves farm team at the time) … just so you know …

March 14, 2008 at 11:35 pm
There’s my answer; Zarate in to start the 6th.
March 14, 2008 at 11:35 pm
Kemp gave that a ride.
March 14, 2008 at 11:36 pm
Fly ball pitchers do well at Petco.
March 14, 2008 at 11:36 pm
92. I feel that too. We did San Fran and Arizona last year, as well as the obligatory games in LA…we’re going up to see the Pads in the Giants’ home opener again this year, and I’m sure we’ll make it to Phoenix again this summer. Would be nice to go further out, but a student budget only allows so much when you try to hit 30 games a year…
March 14, 2008 at 11:40 pm
#97: This is a quagmier. I have the means, but lack the time and you have the time and lack the means. There has to be a happy median somewhere.
March 14, 2008 at 11:41 pm
Kouz needs to lay off of shit like that. We don’t need him hurt.
March 14, 2008 at 11:42 pm
Dodgers, still classless.
March 14, 2008 at 11:42 pm
Ugly rundown. 2-1 LA. I think I’m about done here…been up since 5AM…
March 14, 2008 at 11:42 pm
what happened?
March 14, 2008 at 11:42 pm
100. Word. That was unnecessary.
March 14, 2008 at 11:44 pm
Got him under that pitch. Zarate lucky to get out of that inning with just the 1 run.
March 14, 2008 at 11:44 pm
102: Ball hit to CF with men on 1st and 2nd. Pitcher cut the ball coming in from CF and went to third to trap the guy in a rundown. Kouz has him dead to rights and guy ducks down, causing Kouz to barrell roll over him.
March 14, 2008 at 11:48 pm
The Padres have a manger in this game as well. Love it.
March 14, 2008 at 11:48 pm
I love the utter disdain Matty has for this concept. It’s just brilliant.
March 14, 2008 at 11:49 pm
106 … manger?
March 14, 2008 at 11:50 pm
108: I’m several pittchers of Leninkugels in. Some slack please, monsieur.
March 14, 2008 at 11:50 pm
Mudcat imitating Hawk Harrelson. Priceless.
You can put it on the boooooooard…YES!!!
March 14, 2008 at 11:54 pm
OK guys, I’m over it. Gotta get up early and bounce down to San Marcos to work on a school project. Good night, and go minor league-type Padres! Except that Trev just came in, so go minor leaguers + Trev…
March 14, 2008 at 11:56 pm
#105: Slight correction: Adrian actually took the throw from the outfield.
March 14, 2008 at 11:56 pm
112: Doh. Hard to make out these things without the benefit of replay.
