It’s beginning to look a lot like Opening Day. What better time to bust out an esoteric table:

Jake Peavy: 2007 Starts by Percentage of Pitches for Strikes
Str/Pit GS IP/GS H/9 HR/9 BB/9 K/9 ERA W-L RS/G RA/G
Statistics are courtesy of Baseball-Reference.
>.66 10 6.80 5.16 0.40 2.51 11.25 1.72 8-1 6.70 2.60
.63-.66 15 6.60 7.64 0.45 2.36 9.00 2.36 6-4 3.73 2.87
<.63 9 6.30 7.31 0.79 3.65 8.89 3.81 5-1 6.44 3.78

Throwing strikes is good. Apparently so is having your teammates score lots of runs.

  1. Just kidding. Good decision to let him swing away.

  2. If P-Mac isn’t better then Khalil at home the Pads might be in some trouble the early part of the season.

I like the Bard-McAnulty combo back to back. Two guys that get on base and have some doubles power. That’s another reason to bat Khalil behind them on the chance that he runs into one.

Does Carlos Lee always run like that? He looks like he’s injured out there. He’s barely lifting his knees.

  3. Nice to see Kouz and Greene aren’t colliding this year on that play.

  4. I thought OG was going to trip into the warning track.

  5. #34:

It is what Coleman has been calling him all spring and it reminds me of Arnold’s bully in Diff’rent Strokes which is kind of cool. I vote for “The Gooch”. Of course it was given less than desirable connotations by the guys from “Jackass” show & movie.

Regardless, I am so freaking excited I can’t believe this day is finally here!

  6. Re: 23 – “B-Squad” is really a compliment to them..they are more like the X squad…they are terrible.

This East Coast thing sucks…it is bed time and it is only the 3rd inning. I need a coffee…or a scotch.

  7. 56: ESPN’s “A Squad” is plenty awful, too.

  8. Re: 45 – that was his second gear…he runs like me…

And is Arestis talking about the “1st half” in regards to KK not hitting? Dude, he did not hit in April…

  9. Richard…I like John Miller, but Joe Morgan is a tool.

  10. Peavy was throwing some heat this inning, but he was missing badly with his location. Nice work setting up the K on the heat with the changeup.

  11. I guess Bardo didn’t like that bat. LOL.

  12. The Bard-PMac-Peavy thing seems to be working tonight.

  13. Jake Peavy esta en fuego!

  14. P-Mac swinging the wood – and Peavy doubles his RBI total! Give him the Silver Slugger already!

  15. D.J. Gallo of ESPN.com’s Page 2 had his NL preview today, and his riff on the Padres seems appropriate tonight:

Like division rivals Arizona, Los Angeles and San Francisco, the Padres have difficulty scoring runs. But San Diego will still be competitive, thanks to a pitching staff led by Jake Peavy, who led the NL in wins, strikeouts and ERA last season. Peavy also led the Padres with 17 hits, a .233 batting average and seven RBIs.

  16. They just talked about how this was Jerry Coleman’s 63rd straight spring training — he hasn’t missed one since he signed as a professional in 1946. Pretty amazing.

  17. Every year since the big war.

  18. random thoughts…Isn’t Peavy like watching the 1970s pitchers. He can pitch, hit, and not afraid to slide.

What about bard back to middle of lineup, maybe 5th? Seems a better fit than Hairston.

  19. 68: Or Kevin Brown, during the 1998 playoffs.

Candace Wiggins, son of Alan, just scored 41 points to lead Stanford to the Final Four.

  20. Adriaaaaaaan!!!!!!!!!

  21. ‘Bout time Greene got something going.

  22. Oswalt throws one in the dirt. Grant say “they never swung at them when I threw it down there”. Gwynn replies, “You always showed your pitches. Grant’s reply, “Now you tell me. Gwynn, without missing a beat, “I told you then, too”
It’s fun to listen to Tony taking about hitting. So simple. So matter of fact.

  23. 69: I’m a St. Louis area guy. Gibson was what I was thinking about, but Kevin Brown is a good call.

I’ve been reading the Ducksnorts for the last couple years, finally posting. Looks like I’m hooked.

  24. The ESPN guys just praised Hairston, correctly, for going from first to third on Greene’s dinker to left. Smart heads-up play.

  25. Suppose to rain Wednesday. If a rain out will they play a double header on Thursday? If so, how does that work out for ticket holders?

  26. 68:

Moving Hairston down in the order against RHP is probably a good idea. Certainly he should be in the middle of the order against lefties though.

Wild game in Atlanta tonight. The Pirates blew a five run lead in the bottom of the ninth, got a 3 run HR from Nady (his 2nd of the game) in the 12th but then gave up 2 runs in the bottom of the inning before getting the 3rd out with the tying run on first. Some poor performances from closers so far this season.

  27. 73: Gibson, definitely. Great athlete. Played for the Globetrotters for a year. He is one of the all time home run leaders among pitchers.

  28. @72 – always a pleaseure to hear Gwynn shoot the BS

  29. #73: Jeff did you buy the 2008 Annual? Great read about GY’s trip to Cooperstown.

  30. 79: Haven’t bought it yet, need to though.

  31. Peavy causes Oswalt to get the hook. Sweet!

  32. I’m sure Jake will be rubbing this game in Oswalt’s face later at the bar

  33. Nice to see the Giles finally get on base tonight. He had some less than stellar ABs.

  34. 83: You have to assume he’ll be insufferable after wearing Roy out like that.

  35. 85: insufferable succotash

  36. Domo adigato Mr. Iguchi. Domo…domo

  37. The Gooch.

Kouz needs to take one for the team there…maybe…

  38. Bases loaded with Adrian up. Whew.

  39. DIPS and BABIP perspective: Peavy was 3 runs luckier than Oswalt today

  40. Astros just lucked out.

  41. Damn. Adrian smoked that one, and Petco claims another victim (with an assist from Bourn’s wheels). Park effects, indeed.

  42. A book a highly recommend for this season: The Bill James Gold Mine

  43. Waaaaaay off topic, but this has to be shared. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a Padre mentioned in a New York Times op-ed…let alone two of them in one column.

    http://www.nytimes.com/2008/04/01/opinion/01brooks.html

Must-read. Geoff, I nominate this for the Friday links.

  44. So, any 2nd guessing on Peavy not coming out?… 91 pitches after 6 IP… first game of the season. I can understand him batting in the bottom of the 6th… best stick on the club ;-) … but lift him for a pinch-runner after the walk.

  45. 95: There was no reason not to at least let him start the seventh.

  46. 95 – only question I’d have with that is, do we have a clear 7th inning guy in the bullpen yet; or would that choice be lineup/matchup-driven? I’m OK with letting Jake go the 7th, to set up Bell – Hoffman.

  47. Charachteristic hit by Silent L.

  48. i like the silent break on mlb this year… go pads

  49. There is a “hit” by Greene. Goes to show you not just anyone can play in the Petco OF.
