Edmonds put on DL … per TK @ UT

Opening day minus P-mac… more or less.
March 28, 2008 at 7:07 pm
3 … yup, that’s how I see the lineup … and Peavy, of course …
March 28, 2008 at 7:08 pm
3 … and I think the rational for playing Huber over McAnulty is to get as much of a look at him as possible … they’ve got a *big* decision to make when Edmonds is ready to come off the DL …
March 28, 2008 at 7:09 pm
Looks like Maddux mow’d ‘em down 1-2-3 in top of 1st …
March 28, 2008 at 7:10 pm
5: Also because Saunders is a lefty and Huber’s going to be starting against lefties. So I think Huber is going to start the second game of the season when Wandy Rodriguez starts for Houston.
March 28, 2008 at 7:11 pm
OT … Esteban Loaiza is the fifth starter for the Dogs …

8 pitch first inning for Maddux, 7 strikes… that’s just nasty…
March 28, 2008 at 7:18 pm
KOUZ!
March 28, 2008 at 7:20 pm
Anyone else holding their breath when they see Giles running so much?
March 28, 2008 at 7:23 pm
11 … why is he running so much?
March 28, 2008 at 7:27 pm
12. Chasing two fly balls.. both nice plays (that he made).
I’m just terrified of seeing Jody Gerut in right field on Opening Day.
March 28, 2008 at 7:30 pm
13 … thanks … seems like OG has done well on his rehab … not rushed it … not had any “setbacks” … I’m past being worried about him … I’ll bet he doesn’t play the full game tonight and we’ll see McAnulty out there … and I’m not terrified about seeing either McAnulty or Gerut in RF … not that I think they are “good”, but I’m looking forward to seeing both of them get ample playing time, especially early in the season so that it becomes easier to disposition one of them when Edmonds is ready to play.
March 28, 2008 at 7:31 pm
That’s kind of a scary defensive outfield out there tonight — Huber (a converted catcher and 1B), Hairston (originally 2B) and Giles (coming off major knee surgery and having one of the weakest arms in the majors). Doesn’t matter that much with Maddux on the mound but it will be scary with CY pitching.
Of course, as I write that Huber makes a nice play going to the wall in LF.
March 28, 2008 at 7:32 pm
Nice play by Huber tracking down a line drive fly ball onto the warning track and then running into the wall.
March 28, 2008 at 7:35 pm
Since this is an excibition game and not a cactus leage game, if the occasion arises, would they play extra innings?
March 28, 2008 at 7:38 pm
Maddux very effective tonight…
Good to see only a week before his start in game 3 of the year.
March 28, 2008 at 7:42 pm
Maddux 3 and out … whassup?
March 28, 2008 at 7:43 pm
19 … never mind … I just remember Jake only went 3 and CY only went 3 … I’ll bet that’s “the plan” … sounds OK to me …
March 28, 2008 at 7:44 pm
20 … which, I s’pose, aligns with having a 12-man pitching staff … not that I agree with that, but that appears to be the decision that’s been made …
March 28, 2008 at 7:47 pm
Towers was on the Channel 4 telecast, he mentioned something about Maddux was only going to pitch 3 innings. He also talked about how Huber was “a right-handed Paul McAnulty” and how he’s been interested in Huber since he was a catcher in the Mets system. Since the Padres don’t really need a backup 1B (AGon doesn’t need to missed too many games) I wonder if Huber is a better fit for the roster then Tony Clark — although it’s nice to have his power bat coming off the bench. I wish that they reconsider the decision to carry 12 pitchers — they don’t seem to have enough flexibility on the bench, especially defensively.
March 28, 2008 at 7:50 pm
#22: He also talked alot about Chase Headley and how good the kid is and he’ll probably be a fixture in a couple of months.
March 28, 2008 at 7:50 pm
is it just me or does Mud look exactly like the swinging friar…
March 28, 2008 at 7:51 pm
22. I think you have to carry 12 pitchers… Maddux and Young can’t get you past 6 very often…. Jake throws too many pitches to be considered “efficient”… and Wolf is a question mark after his injury. Gotta have that extra “innings eater”.
March 28, 2008 at 7:53 pm
#24: Mud is a 12 year old in a 40 year old’s body.
March 28, 2008 at 7:59 pm
Nice out for Igi
March 28, 2008 at 8:00 pm
Rusch blows the perfect game
March 28, 2008 at 8:03 pm
#28: LOL
March 28, 2008 at 8:03 pm
22 … wow, very interesting idea to consider Huber taking Clark’s spot on the roster rather than Gerut or McAnulty … i like the idea … but it doesn’t seem to be the direction the Padres are headed … they seem to like Clark … more than i do, but, again, the FO knows more/better … my gut still says that McAnulty will find a home in the AL “soon” …
March 28, 2008 at 8:05 pm
Again I’m noticing Padre hitters are not drawing walks … for an org that talks about the value of hitters taking walks and pitchers throwing strikes, it sure doesn’t seem to manifest as much as i’d like it to onto in-game performance …
March 28, 2008 at 8:09 pm
#31: Look up Walley Joyners BB record (I’m too lazy), that might give some insight (?).
March 28, 2008 at 8:10 pm
Kouz has really developed over this past year.
March 28, 2008 at 8:16 pm
31. I do not believe you see the organizational philosophy in full bloom, until the major league squad starts filling in with players, who came up in the Padre farm system.
March 28, 2008 at 8:18 pm
Dudes, that looked like it hit the dirt first. Lucky on base.
March 28, 2008 at 8:19 pm
OG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
March 28, 2008 at 8:21 pm
OT … just noticed that the Rockies have off days scheduled for tomorrow and Sunday … seems very odd …
March 28, 2008 at 8:21 pm
35 … what’s that mean?
36 … what’s that mean?
March 28, 2008 at 8:24 pm
30: I think I read somewhere that Gerut has a minor league option. If that’s true, I’d bet he gets sent down when Edmonds comes back off the DL. If it’s not, well, it’s still probably going to be him or McAnulty out of luck.
OG certainly looks healthy with the way he’s running around tonight.
March 28, 2008 at 8:26 pm
#38:
#35: They called our batter hit by the ball. But looking at the replay it looked like as he was squaring to bunt, the ball hit the dirt before it hit his leg.
#36: OG nailed a nice shot to left center to drive in said hit batter.
March 28, 2008 at 8:29 pm
Not a good sign when you’re giving up home runs at Petco to Erick Aybar.
March 28, 2008 at 8:31 pm
28 … and Bass blows the shutout … send that guy down to AAA
March 28, 2008 at 8:32 pm
Did anyone happen to catch the pitching rotation for this up-comming week? I missed it while I was on the phone. All I know is that Jake has the opener.
March 28, 2008 at 8:32 pm
38:
Crabbe was hit in the foot on a pitch where he was at least thinking about a drag bunt. Giles split the gap in left center for a triple mostly because Robb Quinlan, the LF, looked like a beached whale running after the ball (seriously, he reminded me of Adam Dunn or Pat Burrell out there).
I was just saying that Huber might be a better fit since he can play multiple positions which would come in handy when your bench only has 5 players. But it would be hard to give up on Clark’s power bat. As far as carrying 12 pitchers goes, they did that last season and relievers, especially Cameron, went ages between appearances. Both Rusch and Gonzalez can pitch multiple innings and there are almost never blowouts in Petco so the extra pitcher isn’t needed like it is in Colorado, Arizona or Texas.
March 28, 2008 at 8:33 pm
42 … and the no-no, btw …
March 28, 2008 at 8:33 pm
A-Gone!!!!!!!!!!!! Nice dbl.
March 28, 2008 at 8:34 pm

March 28, 2008 at 8:35 pm
Thanks Lynch
March 28, 2008 at 8:36 pm
Hmmm … will McAnulty stay in the game and play 1B now?
March 28, 2008 at 8:40 pm
Nice offensive inning.
March 28, 2008 at 8:43 pm
McAnulty took over in LF and it looks like Huber moved over to 1B. I want to see a ball hit to SS to see how Crabbe looks there.
March 28, 2008 at 8:46 pm
OT … in case you didn’t already know it, the Dogs starting 3B-man on Opening Day looks like it will be Blake DeWitt …
http://www.latimes.com/sports/.....8021.story
… who was at least 4th on their depth chart at the start of Spring Training (LaRoche + Nomar + Abreau all on DL) … snif …
March 28, 2008 at 8:50 pm
Boo hoo
March 28, 2008 at 8:55 pm
52: I’m definitely ok with DeWitt as the starting 3B. That’s even better than Nomar as the starting 3B.
Enrique Gonzalez looked really good that inning. Good velocity on the fastball and a good slider.
March 28, 2008 at 8:55 pm
Mud and Quis were talking about the Giants and talking about now that they don’t have Bonds (although I think they didn’t mention his name) they won’t move station to station and will be able to hit and run and steal bases. Yeah, everyone hates a player that gets on base nearly half the time and hits about 25 more homers then the players they are throwing out there this season.
What a joke the Giants have become. Their opening day SS might be Brian Bocock http://minors.baseball-referen.....?pid=31087
I think it’s safe to say he’d be the worst player on a major league roster really belongs in Single A. That fact that Bochy would leave the Padres and take the Giants job makes you think that he wasn’t the right fit for the Padres, I’m not sure how you can trust someone with such poor judgement.
March 28, 2008 at 8:56 pm
Ooh, there you go Lynch, a walk drawn by Crabbe. A nice 7 pitch one, too.
March 28, 2008 at 8:56 pm
51 … given that the box score shows that EnGonz got 3 Ks in his IP, i’m guessing you didn’t see a ball hit to SS … perhaps you will in the 9th …
March 28, 2008 at 8:57 pm
56 … whew … now let’s hope Crabbe doesn’t get thrown out on the bases somehow … my next pet peeve …
March 28, 2008 at 9:00 pm
With Barrett PH’ing now, all 13 “hitters” on our projected Opening Day roster have gotten into this game … nice …
March 28, 2008 at 9:00 pm
58: Well he’s looked pretty good thus far. He’s gotten good jumps back to first on pickoffs and good jumps toward second when he’s been running on the 3-2 counts.
March 28, 2008 at 9:01 pm
Crabbe gets a nice steal to 2nd there.
March 28, 2008 at 9:01 pm
And hey, he just stole second pretty easily.
March 28, 2008 at 9:05 pm
Speaking of Bonds, here’s a line from SI.com’s baseball writer John Donovan baseball column today:
“Barry Bonds will not get a job. And nobody will care, either.”
It’s too bad that Bonds is going to be the only one to take the brunt of the consequences for the steroid using players. As we all know he was far from the only one doing it, he just happened to be the most successful. I hope the reason for the scorn from the writers is because he was a jerk to them, not for another reason. It’s funny that behavior that we (the fans) would cheer (treating the writers like crap) will end his career.
March 28, 2008 at 9:10 pm
63 … not all of us (the fans) would cheer treating the writers like crap … but I understand the spirit of what you’re saying …
March 28, 2008 at 9:11 pm
Was there “entry music” for Heat (sic) Bell?
March 28, 2008 at 9:12 pm
Huber should be on the U.S. Olympic Gymnastic team in Bejing this year!!!!
Idiot. Good way to get one’s self hurt.
March 28, 2008 at 9:13 pm
66 … what’d he do?
March 28, 2008 at 9:14 pm
66: He can’t be an the U.S. Olympic team, he’s Australian.
March 28, 2008 at 9:14 pm
Went over the rail chasing a foul ball and ended up doing a hand stand in the stands!
March 28, 2008 at 9:16 pm
52 … an interesting note about the Dogs from the article … about them going with 11 or 12 pitchers …
Torre said that the need to carry extra infielders could force him to carry 11 pitchers instead of 12, making a situational pitcher like Myers a luxury the team couldn’t afford.
March 28, 2008 at 9:16 pm
Yeah, I guess that was a bit of an exaggeration but I think the way they have acted in the past few years about the steroid issue makes them deserve our scorn. They completely ignored it even though it was obvious at the time and now that the public has turned against it they’ve jumped in and become the biggest zealots trying to cover up their roll in the whole situation. I wonder if the football writers will act like that (if anyone ever cares about it)?
March 28, 2008 at 9:17 pm
69 … one way to be sure he sticks on the team is to be on the DL …. just sayin’ …
March 28, 2008 at 9:23 pm
Ballgame … wow, that seemed easy, didn’t it?
March 28, 2008 at 9:27 pm
I’m just glad to see baseball back in Petco Park. Can’t wait for this comming Thur. & Fri. I got tix!
March 28, 2008 at 11:01 pm
26: Grant is 44; who’s 40 year old body does he have?
March 29, 2008 at 4:02 am
71: It’s interesting you would cheer anyone treating anyone like crap.
It’s much more egregious that the owners and general managers and managers and players ignored the problem and did nothing than anything the media did or did not do.
Your point is akin to blaming the world’s problems (war, politics, finance, etc.) on the people who cover those problems.
Exactly when was the steroid issue obvious to you? Did you alert the authorities?
During the feel-good summer of 1998 with McGwire and Sosa, Steve Wilstein of The Associated Press questioned McGwire about the andro that was sitting in his locker. He was on top of the issue to some degree.
And for the rest of the summer, everyone — FANS included — shouted him down and said stop ruining our summer of distorted records. Wilstein was on top of it, and no one cared.
Major League Baseball took action only after Caminiti admitted to using steroids, after Canseco admitted to using steroids and wrote a book about it, after the San Francisco Chronicle writers (the MEDIA) blew the cover off BALCO and Barry Bonds and his head, after Congress held hearings because the incompotent Bud Selig closed his eyes to the problem for his entire tenure, after the cat was completely out of the bag, after everyone who could read a newspaper knew there was a performance-enhancing drug problem, then — and only then — did Major League Baseball take baby steps to clean up their house.
So yeah, it’s too bad that Barry Bonds, who has already a full Hall of Fame career, can’t find a job at the age of 43. It is really too bad.
