The chief export of Chuck Norris is Pain.
September 17, 2007 at 6:06 pm
Watch out, Geoff. Chuck Norris is out there.
September 17, 2007 at 6:06 pm
He does not tolerate insults. Chuck Norris doesn’t sleep, he waits.
September 17, 2007 at 6:12 pm
Phillies will win practically every day now. They may blow by the Mets - the Mets are getting beat late at DC. Can you imagine the Mets not making the playoffs ? They are only 4 behind the Pads for the last playoff spot !!! The NL Pennant race is wide open !!!
September 17, 2007 at 6:19 pm
of course, I meant 4 ahead for the last spot. The Mets are really struggling.
September 17, 2007 at 6:27 pm
Fricking Cardnals, a pathetic team, and to think those players are still pulling big paychecks. Christ on a crutch!
Phils 5
Cards 0 in the 5th
September 17, 2007 at 6:29 pm
6: I agree. The Phils are really starting to concern me.
September 17, 2007 at 6:32 pm
Phils 6
Cards 0 Didn’t they win the WS last year?
September 17, 2007 at 7:00 pm
Anyone else’s feed really quiet?
September 17, 2007 at 7:01 pm
Is it just me, or has Tony Gwynn put on a lot of weight recently?
September 17, 2007 at 7:05 pm
10 … not according to this …

September 17, 2007 at 7:07 pm
1,2,3 … When the Boogeyman goes to sleep every night, he checks his closet for Chuck Norris

September 17, 2007 at 7:13 pm
Charles “Friggin” Bronson rules all and kicks all @$$.
War OJ going to hell (errr the slammer), and the Padres winning the World Series. I’m out.
September 17, 2007 at 7:15 pm
Nice RBI DBL Cammy!!!!
September 17, 2007 at 7:16 pm
A sacrifice bunt in the first inning against a terrible pitcher (coming off a walk) with our own terrible pitcher on the mound? If you don’t think Blum can hit, Black, don’t bat him second.
September 17, 2007 at 7:17 pm
I liked KK in the 3-spot the other day … why not continue with that, I wonder?
September 17, 2007 at 7:18 pm
15 … agree’d … B(l)um in the 2-spot is *not* a good idea …
September 17, 2007 at 7:25 pm
Nice seeing X, but I’d like to see him GIDP even more.
September 17, 2007 at 7:25 pm
12: Darnit! I was in the process of collecting a few of my favorites before providing the link! Oh well, here are four of my favorites:
1: Four of my favorite:
-When Chuck Norris does a pushup, he isn’t lifting himself up, but pushing the world down….
-There is no chin under Chuck Norris’ Beard. There is only another fist.
-Chuck Norris did not “lose” his virginity, he stalked it and then destroyed it with extreme prejudice
- Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is based on a true story: Chuck Norris once swallowed a turtle whole, and when he crapped it out, the turtle was six feet tall and had learned karate
September 17, 2007 at 7:28 pm
Thru 1 …
Pitches-strikes - J Van Benschoten 17-9; J Cassel 9-6.
Ground balls-fly balls - J Van Benschoten 3-0; J Cassel 2-1.
Batters faced - J Van Benschoten 5; J Cassel 3.
… that 1st inning was a nice job of “pitching to contact” by Jack C.
September 17, 2007 at 7:32 pm
Cassel looks pretty bad right now. His control seems really off, and he keeps hanging his breaking pitches and leaving balls up. Fortunately, we’re in Petco and he’s pitching against the Pirates, so he can get away with these sort of things.
September 17, 2007 at 7:36 pm
After being down 11-0, the Cards are actually giving the Phils a bit of a scare, narrowing deficit to 3. One thing about the Phils, they have a horrible pen. They would be even closer to the Mets and to the Wild Card spot if they hadn’t blown an 8 or 9 run lead to the Braves a week or so ago.
September 17, 2007 at 7:36 pm
8 … Cards showing a bit o’ spunk …
http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/boxscore?gid=270917124
… the put up a 6-spot in bottom of 7th … now trail only 12-9 …
September 17, 2007 at 7:39 pm
Thru 2 …
Pitches-strikes - J Van Benschoten 29-17; J Cassel 31-19.
Ground balls-fly balls - J Van Benschoten 6-0; J Cassel 2-4.
Batters faced - J Van Benschoten 8; J Cassel 8.
September 17, 2007 at 7:40 pm
Anyone seen Jack Wilson’s September Stats?
48 AB
.521 Avg
5 HR
16 RBI
1.533 OPS
Wow.
September 17, 2007 at 7:45 pm
Great job by Cassel. I think the thing we have to get used to with him is that he is rarely going to toss up anything that even approaches the kinds of gems that CY or Peavy can toss up, even Maddog for that matter. He’s probably going to give up 2-4 runs per game and the offense is going to have to over come it.
September 17, 2007 at 7:48 pm
I’d be happy to get 6 innings out of Cassel…. so far, he’s halfway home.
September 17, 2007 at 7:51 pm
Gi’nts score 2 more on Webb in top of 4th … now up 3-1 …
September 17, 2007 at 7:53 pm
Phils bring on Alfonseca to put out the fire in St.Louis. He follows Jose Mesa and Clay Condrey in relief. Are you kidding me ? How bad could a bullpen be ? And look at some of the bums that the Mets have on their pitching staff.
September 17, 2007 at 7:53 pm
28: That’s not very Cy-Young-esque! Of course, I think that Webb is now a distant 3rd and the race, if you can still call it one, is between Penny and Peavy (frontrunner).
BTW: I could really use a string of 6 straight Padres wins to fill the void left in my life by the Chargers stink-fest last night.
September 17, 2007 at 7:55 pm
Storm down 2-1 thru 3 in Game 5 of the Cal League Championship Series (best-of-5) …
http://web.minorleaguebaseball.....a_sjgafa_1
September 17, 2007 at 7:56 pm
Paulino is now hitting .438 in September. Which gives the hottest hitter (Wilson) another chance at an RBI… of course, he’s averaging an RBI every three at bats in septembers, so this bodes well…
September 17, 2007 at 7:56 pm
Gwynn seems to stuck in a bit of a time warp. He just referred to Xavier Nady (who will turn 29 in two months) as a “good, young hitter”.
September 17, 2007 at 7:56 pm
But Cassel gets him again! WOHOO!
September 17, 2007 at 7:57 pm
Pitt 5 hits 0 runs
Pads 1 hit 1 run.
Sometimes its good to be lucky.
September 17, 2007 at 8:00 pm
Cards score anohter pair … now a 12-11 game … with a man on and Pujols up!
September 17, 2007 at 8:01 pm
35: Make that 3 runs on 3 hits!!!
September 17, 2007 at 8:02 pm
re: 30
How can it be between Peavy and anyone. He leads the league in the triple crown categories and he’s 0.38 better than Chris Young in ERA and 0.49 better than any non-Padres pitcher.
September 17, 2007 at 8:04 pm
In case no one noticed, Khalil hit a 2-run HR to make it 3-0
September 17, 2007 at 8:05 pm
Phillies should be o.k. They have Kane Davis on to close out the 8th. http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/players/6495
September 17, 2007 at 8:05 pm
38: I totally agree. My point was more that Webb cannot be considered. The nod to Penny is that someone has to be number 2.
September 17, 2007 at 8:06 pm
39: Man, he is absolutely on fire right now. Great to see Khalil and Kouz leading this team.
September 17, 2007 at 8:06 pm
St. Louis flew out to deeeeeep center with 2 on to end the inning…. man, it looks like it was close to going on on gameday…
September 17, 2007 at 8:06 pm
38 … I think that’s what Marsh meant when he said “if you can still call it one” … but for some reason, there’s still some media folks naming other names for NL CYA … I say we just lay low and let Jake earn the hardware in his last 2 starts and be happy …
September 17, 2007 at 8:07 pm
Tight strike zone for the most part tonight. Personally I like to see the bigger strike zones, but more up and down then side to side.
September 17, 2007 at 8:08 pm
Thru 4 …
Pitches-strikes - J Van Benschoten 42-24; J Cassel 55-38.
Ground balls-fly balls - J Van Benschoten 7-1; J Cassel 4-6.
Batters faced - J Van Benschoten 11; J Cassel 17.
… hmmm, do you think Bud considered a PH’er there? For sure that will be Jack’s last AB tonight …
September 17, 2007 at 8:10 pm
44: I guess I missed that part.
When Greene plays a full season, he puts up better numbers. Go figure.
September 17, 2007 at 8:11 pm
43 … gotta like the Cards throwin’ out Izzy for the 9th …
September 17, 2007 at 8:13 pm
46: Might not even be a question as Cassel might not even make it through this inning.
September 17, 2007 at 8:14 pm
48: or not
September 17, 2007 at 8:14 pm
48 … except that he just allowed a bomb to Rowand.
Nice job getting out of that inning by Cassel.
September 17, 2007 at 8:15 pm
Not so much on Izzy giving up a solo homer to Rowand, though.
Great pitch by Cassel to induce the double play. Beautiful movement on the pitch to saw off Bautista.
September 17, 2007 at 8:15 pm
Wow, I’m glad we are playing the Pirates.
September 17, 2007 at 8:15 pm
Cassel is pitching phenomenally well. Love to see that.
September 17, 2007 at 8:15 pm
I’m just glad that we skipped Germano’s start….
September 17, 2007 at 8:17 pm
MLBTradeRumors gives the Pads some love for the Bell/Johnson trade…http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/
September 17, 2007 at 8:24 pm
On the late night shift in the dead of last Winter, I heard John Kentera on XEXX spend two or three minutes on Jack Cassel. Kentera told listeners that he “wouldn’t be surprised if Cassel was a factor this year because he had decent stuff & he knew how to battle”. As a Padre junky, I knew who Cassel was, but I never thought that someone on a sports talk show in SD would ever mention someone like Cassel. This is one example of Kentera’s baseball knowledge and instincts. Cassel was actually demoted to AA last year and had to resurrect himself as a starter. It’s quite a cinderella story. Though we are lacking in big time prospects at the higher levels, I think that it is a testimony to the leadership of this franchise that we work with players like this to foster development–guys like Germano or Cassel
September 17, 2007 at 8:29 pm
STL down 13-11, bottom of the ninth, two on, two outs, Branyan at the plate…
September 17, 2007 at 8:29 pm
57 … a bit anecdotal, but I like it …
BTW, Storm now down 5-1 in top of 5th …
September 17, 2007 at 8:30 pm
Thru 5 …
Pitches-strikes - J Van Benschoten 84-45; J Cassel 66-48.
Ground balls-fly balls - J Van Benschoten 9-4; J Cassel 7-6.
Batters faced - J Van Benschoten 23; J Cassel 21.
… I’d be happy going to the bully now …
September 17, 2007 at 8:30 pm
Down 2, 2 out 2 on for the Cards. Up comes Branyan, maybe he’ll help us this year yet…
September 17, 2007 at 8:30 pm
Branyan up with 2 on…..
September 17, 2007 at 8:31 pm
and he watches strike three zoom by…
September 17, 2007 at 8:32 pm
58,61,62 … Branyan worked the count to 3-2 … then K’d looking … woulda been fun to be at Busch Stadium tonight …
September 17, 2007 at 8:32 pm
and he takes what looks to be a clear strike for strike three…
September 17, 2007 at 8:34 pm
64 … Moving on SF still up 3-1 on ARI. Gotta love Sept baseball.
September 17, 2007 at 8:34 pm
This is almost exactly like Cassel’s last start. Gives up a bunch of baserunners, but leaves most of the runners on the base. Not pretty, but I’ll take it!
September 17, 2007 at 8:36 pm
*VERY* nice outing by Jack Cassel … well done!
Now let’s get a little rally goin’ and use his spot to get Myrow an AB with men on …
September 17, 2007 at 8:40 pm
Great outing by Cassel, now lets get those guys in and give us some breathing room.
September 17, 2007 at 8:42 pm
Wow, well a guess we should had just sent Cassel up to bat.
September 17, 2007 at 8:42 pm
He and Barrett are completely worthless
September 17, 2007 at 8:45 pm
I dont really like Brocail pitching in there higher leverage situations
September 17, 2007 at 8:45 pm
Thru 6 …
Pitches-strikes - J Van Benschoten 84-45; F Osoria 11-8; J Cassel 78-57.
Ground balls-fly balls - J Van Benschoten 9-4; F Osoria 3-0; J Cassel 8-7.
Batters faced - J Van Benschoten 23; F Osoria 4; J Cassel 25.
… obviously that wasn’t my first choice for a PH’er …
September 17, 2007 at 8:47 pm
Thats twice now in 3 games Buddy pulled a starter too early I think. Tomko only had 77 pitches through 6 and Cassel only had 78 pitches.
September 17, 2007 at 8:47 pm
#72 Yeah, but I certainly don’t want Cla in there. Brocail has been one of the more effective reliever on this staff.
September 17, 2007 at 8:50 pm
man!!! no runs on ten hits. OUCH!
September 17, 2007 at 8:51 pm
76: Anyone know what the record is for hits in a game without a run?
September 17, 2007 at 8:54 pm
That would have been a good opportunity to get NOG’s superior defense in the field by PH for Blum against the lefty.
September 17, 2007 at 8:54 pm
77: no, put they put a couple more hits up w/o scoring and I bet we’ll find out what the record is in the game recap.
September 17, 2007 at 8:56 pm
78: we know, you hate Blum
September 17, 2007 at 8:57 pm
#78 I agree with you. Why doesn’t BB do this more. It just makes sense. Giles could win a game with his glove.
September 17, 2007 at 8:59 pm
It is really the only value that Marcus can bring to the table and it’s not like Blum is an above average offensive player so it makes all the sense in the world to bring Marcus on late.
September 17, 2007 at 9:01 pm
74 … I disagree … you just can’t risk sending those guys out for another inning … they are not front-line starters … they are guys that have put together a good outing … take the innings an RUN … overall, I’m a bit down on BB … but getting Tomko and Cassel out before they turn back into pumpkins has been AOK with me …
OTOH, I too would have PH’d for Blum (ex. get Myrow an AB) and gotten NOGs glove in the game … we’ve got expanded rosters, use ‘em!
September 17, 2007 at 9:02 pm
82: I’d rather see stansberry, he has looked good and isnt an automatic out and a game thats still pretty close.
September 17, 2007 at 9:03 pm
That was one *nice* 8th inning by Bell … say “aye” if you’re missing Scott Linebrink … crickets …
September 17, 2007 at 9:04 pm
83: I agree. You take out a pitcher before he gives up runs, not when.
September 17, 2007 at 9:04 pm
Arizona and San Fran all knotted up at 3 now in the bottom of the 7th.
September 17, 2007 at 9:04 pm
84 … my point is that BB can run NOG out there for his defense, and still have a backup in Stansberry if we need to get offensive again …
September 17, 2007 at 9:05 pm
83: When it seems they are in a decent groove i dont see why you couldnt send them out for another inning after only 75 pitches.
September 17, 2007 at 9:06 pm
Anybody else in favor of sticking with Bell for the 9th? Just a thought …
September 17, 2007 at 9:07 pm
89: because we have one of the best bullpens in the league. If we have a lead through 6 with one of our back-end guys, you go to the pen.
September 17, 2007 at 9:08 pm
89 … so the phrase “ticking time bomb” means nothing to you?
September 17, 2007 at 9:08 pm
90: lol, i hope your kidding. Hoffy hasn’t pitched in a while, he should be automatic.
September 17, 2007 at 9:08 pm
#84 Stansberry simply hasn’t had enough reps at this level to know much - it would be risky dumping Marcus at this point for a couple of different reasons. As recently as yesterday I was on dump Marcus Giles train, I chickened out when I had a vision of Stansberry getting picked off second base in a playoff game -caught like a deer in the headlights.
You owe us one Marcus ! You have really sucked this year. Get a big hit in the playoffs or something would ya !
September 17, 2007 at 9:09 pm
86: There is no way of knowing that either Tomko or Cassel would had given up runs in the 7th (or any inning anyone pitches). When your 8th and 9th inning guys are your only consistant relievers, it makes sense to me to send the starter back out there when they are having a good outing.
September 17, 2007 at 9:11 pm
and the DBacks take the lead: 5-3, still bottom of the 7th.
September 17, 2007 at 9:11 pm
91: Our bullpen has been hit or miss since the ASB
92: I dont see either of them as ticking time bombs against terrible teams.
September 17, 2007 at 9:11 pm
and the DBacks take the lead: 5-3 in the bottom of the 7th. Stupid Giants!
September 17, 2007 at 9:12 pm
95: Not with undependable starters. You can’t trust only two relievers on the staff. If that’s the case, cut everyone else.
Showalter was fired in 1995 for trusting only Cone and McDowell.
September 17, 2007 at 9:12 pm
Kouz with a really nice DBL. This guy is on fire.
September 17, 2007 at 9:16 pm
It’s so nice to have a healthy Scott Hairston back which thankfully means no more Sledge. Double winner.
September 17, 2007 at 9:16 pm
Kouz has really turned it on since the ASB, his stats are beginning to measure up to the top NL rookies
September 17, 2007 at 9:18 pm
Not too much dropoff from Bradley to Hairston right now. Let Jenga come back 100% - give him another week.
September 17, 2007 at 9:20 pm
Giants have runners on 1st and 2nd in the top of the 8th with no outs.
September 17, 2007 at 9:20 pm
20th shutout of the year, thats pretty impressive.
September 17, 2007 at 9:21 pm
Another nice win boys!! Go Giants!!!
September 17, 2007 at 9:21 pm
103: The only real drop-off is protection for Adrian
September 17, 2007 at 9:21 pm
Nice win Pads! Go Giants!!!
105: I believe that is a franchise record.
