Great win Friday night (box score). Don’t believe me? Look at Saturday’s pitching matchup.
Five things:
- Certain promotions notwithstanding, the ’90s are not “retro,” although one day they will be.
- Chris Young is slowly returning to form, which is good because without him, the Padres are hosed.
- Khalil Greene and Kevin Kouzmanoff are carrying this team on offense right now. Khalil, Kouz, Brian Giles, and Adrian Gonzalez all have a SLG of .500 or better since August 1. Small sample, but nice.
- Extra mad props to USD alum and ex-Padre farmhand Dan Giese for serving up the walkoff homer to Khalil. Way to do right by your city.

Quis is killing me. I was preparing to celebrate Khalil’s walkoff, but Quis managed to ruin that moment for me. I can’t get my head around the idea of someone enjoying his broadcasts enough to have hired him. It boggles the mind.

San Antonio are 7-0 up after the second: looks quite promising given that they are already 2-1 in the TCL series. So, two groups of Padre farmhands, some serious prospects among them, are being successful playing post-season baseball. That can’t be bad experience. And it does look as though the farm system was not quite as poor at the start of the season as the experts claimed.
Let’s hope both they and Lake Elsinore can see it though today.

4 … I posted a comment at uniwatchblog.com asking about last night uni’s (which were advertised as 1997, the last year TG won a batting title) … asking if the ‘97 & ‘98 were the same (Based on the pics at Dressed To The Nines, the Padre unis from 95 thru 2000 where the same) … and got this reply …
Essentially the blue pinstripe jersey remained unchanged from its inception in 1991 through the early 2000s (aside from various shoulder patches). In 1999, the Padres introduced the white jersey with no pinstripes and no orange as a second alternate jersey (the local papers here hated them because they thought they looked like Dodgers south in them). Dressed to the Nines shows this jersey starting in 2002, which was probably the year it replaced the blue pinstripe as the offial home jersey. It was definitely around before then though, because it’s easy to find pictures of Gwynn (who retired in 2001) wearing it.
Beginning in the late 1990’s, Padres starting pitchers were given the choice of what jersey they wanted to wear (pinstripe, solid blue, or all white) and barely any of them chose to go with the blue pinstripes. Eventually, the blue pinstripe was just gone. I’ve always wondered what was the last date the Padres wore the blue pinstripes (aside from last night of course).
… any uni afficianados here who can add to and/or comment on this?

Tomko better have a short leash tonight. We have plenty of fresh arms in the bullpen.
Let’s Look at what’s in front of us, not behind. Play aggressive, keep the heat on the D’backs, instead of playing defensively and trying to hold off the Dogs and Phils. Control our fate, not depend on someone helping us out.

I just noticed that these comparisons make surprising reading:
Player 1 has hit .253, with an OBP of .331 and an SLG of .424; 24 doubles, 20 home runs.
Player 2 you’ll recognize: he has 39 doubles, 22 homers, and comes out at .255/.293/.461.
Player 3 will also be familiar: just 21 doubles and 11 homers, but he walks a lot: .282 /.371/.422.
So the trade of 1+ for 3 is not looking as one-sided this year as it has in the past; and the subsequent career paths are not now confirming the wisdom of the voters for the NL RoY 2004 as firmly as the last two years have. But of course it has been Jay Bay’s year to be injured.

22 … Ekstrom’s no-hitter has now reached the end of the sixth; but he’s thrown 91 pitches, so it’s not likely to go much further, even if he has just struck out bunting in the 7th. Dowdy’s added a homer to his earlier triple; so it’s now 8-0.
