another point that i dont think anyone has mentioned is our flood of potential minor leaguers in AA etc. If they pan out, thats x amount of guys playing without major league salaries for at least several years. antonelli, headley, etc. etc.. I mean heck, if it means we can keep jake, i'd trade gonzales away for prospects and stick burke (assuming he stays on track) at first. Thats pretty much what the rockies are doing with helton's salary on the books.
Current score: 0 (to vote for this comment, please visit the site)

I think the Padres will make a play for an extension on Jake. I think they will offer a five year deal that includes buying out 2009 (essentially a four year extension) and will max out between 15-16 million a year.

Will Jake take that deal? I don't know... Can he get more? ABSOLUTELY. "The Boss" in NY is achin' to make Jake a $100M for five years offer...
Current score: 0 (to vote for this comment, please visit the site)

87: That was nice of Sandy not to point out the caller's all but certain error that the Padres had a $90 million payroll in 1998. A scan of baseball-reference.com. certainly wouldn't back up that figure.
Current score: 0 (to vote for this comment, please visit the site)

This afternoon on XX, Sandy Alderson talked about Peavy's comments, among other things. Gaslamp has a nice recap:

84: It may increase value, but how much does it increase revenue? Teams generally get a bump from the playoffs and the bump is bigger the deeper they go, but the Angels did not suddenly grab 50+ million in revenue as a result of the WS. A lot of their revenue increase can also be attributed to Moreno's successful marketing plan.

If the WS was really such a huge revenue boost, the team would be better able to deal with the later years of a contract that helped them get there.

Serious investing, if you're not going to go after big free agents, might be 8+ years of Matt Harvey or Rick Porcello. It might be signing Toledo, Colon, and Green (last year) for a little more than you wanted so you'd have trade depth in the minors.
Current score: 0 (to vote for this comment, please visit the site)

#71: Sure, I don't doubt Moreno's role. The point remains that a WS victory increases a franchise's value by a lot. See Chapter 3 of Vince Gennaro's Diamond Dollars for a detailed discussion.

As for going "full-bore," I agree as long as it doesn't hamstring the organization's ability to compete into the future. To use a recent example, if the Padres had signed Zito, it would have been met with great enthusiasm by fans but diminished our chances of remaining competitive going forward. Then the front office would get to spend the next several years trying to find someone to take him off their hands.

What represents "serious investing" -- seven years of Zito, six of Carlos Lee, five of J.D. Drew or Gil Meche, three of Jason Schmidt, two of Greg Maddux? Or maybe trading for Milton Bradley during the season? I dunno...
Current score: 0 (to vote for this comment, please visit the site)

Re 60: A lot of players would like to play in San Diego, but here are the dispositive questions: Which team has more available resources to sign free agents like Vlad Guerrero: the Angels or the Padres? Even if both owners decided to whip out their wallets to see whose was bigger, who is wealthier, Arte Moreno or John Moores?

If you honestly think the Padres had a legitimate chance at signing Vlad Guerrero once the Angels got involved, you need a perspective reorientation back towards objectivity.
Current score: 0 (to vote for this comment, please visit the site)
