53: Hey, Sean, as always, your mileage may vary. I agree losing game IGD's do have a different tone than winning game threads, but there was something very different to this one, at least to my perception, than even a "normal" losing game thread.

I'd hate to see DS overrun by negativity and ignorance, and there are plenty of people who fit that description out there with a computer and an internet connection. Perhaps I'm the one overreacting though. As I said, ymmv.
Current score: 0 (to vote for this comment, please visit the site)

54: I know you feel this way and I was probably a bit overboard myself, but it was truly striking the number of unrecognizable/unfamiliar names on the thread whose comments essentially consisted of, "We suck!"
Current score: 0 (to vote for this comment, please visit the site)

To put things into perspective, last year at this time the Padres were set to host the Giants for a four game series. A series that they got swept at home to fall below .500 (60-61) and drop to four games back. So, the 88 win Padres (2006) were under .500 in the middle of August last year.
Current score: 0 (to vote for this comment, please visit the site)

#49: Pat, thanks much for the suggestion. This is not something I'm looking to implement right now, but I appreciate the feedback. Although I share your frustration at the tone around here at times, I'd like to maintain as open a flow of communication as possible.
Current score: 0 (to vote for this comment, please visit the site)

49: I don't think this IGD is any more negative than any other losing game thread. Usually the negativity is directed at specific players during the game, though it has been known to be directed at the team as a whole on occasion.

The Cardinals weren't "hot" against us last year - we hit against them like we've hit all this year - very, very, very poorly.

As Geoff has pointed out, our lineup can make any pitcher look like Cy Young. I guess I'm not willing to delude myself that Peavy & Young will toss shut outs in their combined three starts of the Division Series.

Will I still root for them to win every day? Yes. Will I get my hopes up that they'll even make or go deep in the post season? No. Will I be happy if they do? You bet.
Current score: 0 (to vote for this comment, please visit the site)

From AP story / game notes ...

The Padres placed C Michael Barrett on the 15-day disabled list and optioned RHP Jack Cassel to Triple-A Portland. They also recalled RHP Mike Thompson from Portland and purchased the contract of C Pete Laforest.
Current score: 0 (to vote for this comment, please visit the site)

Wow! GY, may I suggest some sort of resgistration and/or screening for posting to DS hence forward? I can't believe the negativity around here. It used to be such a positive, and realistic, place. The level of pessimism, and unwarranted negativity, in this thread is stifling. I hope the whiners move on soon.

Hey, do y'all know MLB runs a Padres board? It's free.
Current score: 0 (to vote for this comment, please visit the site)

Those teams with better offenses than us also have worse pitching staffs. The fact is the Padres are currently ahead in both the XWL and actual record. They have played better than all those teams and deserve to be ahead of them. I'm really skeptical that these teams are suddenly better than the Padres.

If the Padres don't look like a playoff caliber team, it speaks really poorly of all those other teams that aren't currently trailing them. As for how they might do in the playoffs if they get there, they have the two best pitchers in the NL on their team. That seems to really stack the odds in their favor in a short series. And didn't last year with St. Louis teach us that it doesn't really matter how good you are as long as you make the playoffs and get hot at the right time? Jeff Weaver, Jeff Suppan, and Anthony Reyes were pitching for them in the playoffs. That's not having a good roster and getting hurt by injuries during the regular season. That's three mediocre pitchers getting hot at the right time.

Khalil: we haven't been able to hit up to this point, and we're still in line to make the playoffs.
Current score: 0 (to vote for this comment, please visit the site)
