IGD: Padres @ Reds (10 Aug 07)
Fri, Aug 10, 2007by Geoff Young
| time: | 4:10 p.m. PT |
| tv: | 4SD |
| sp: | Wil Ledezma (3-3, 5.06) vs Matt Belisle (6-8, 5.26) |
| pre: | Padres.com, SI.com, B-R.com |
The latest contestant in “Who Wants to Pitch Like Cy Young” is Matt Belisle. Friday night actually marks the fifth straight game the Padres will face a starting pitcher who entered the game with an ERA north of 5.00. Belisle follows Braden Looper, Anthony Reyes, Kip Wells, and Joel Pineiro.
Wil Ledezma counters for San Diego. He’ll be making his debut as a starter for the Padres. Ledezma’s track record over the years in that role isn’t especially promising:
| GS | IP/GS | ERA | H/9 | HR/9 | BB/9 | SO/9 | BA | OBP | SLG |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Statistics are through games of August 9, 2007, and are courtesy of Baseball-Reference. | |||||||||
| 33 | 4.91 | 5.56 | 10.44 | 1.22 | 3.50 | 5.11 | .291 | .356 | .464 |
Maybe the element of surprise will work in his favor? Go Padres!

So it looks like we just claimed Kei Igawa from the Yanks. We now have 48 hours to work out a trade with them. I like the move myself. Hopefully the Yanks will just unload him. If he can get his stuff together $4 mil a year is really decent.
August 10, 2007 at 3:52 pm
Can we trade Boomer for Igawa? This could potentially be a great pickup. How much of a posting fee did the Yankees pay for us?
August 10, 2007 at 3:53 pm
2.
Give or take something like $27 Million!!!
August 10, 2007 at 3:54 pm
Rotoworld is reporting that the Yanks would want part of the posting fee paid by the acquiring team but the Fox Sports link it provided doesn’t seem to mention that part.
August 10, 2007 at 3:55 pm
I was thinking the same thing actually about Boomer. I think the fact that NY paid that posting fee is going to be the only hold up in the deal. They may decide to hang on to him only to save face after spending that type of money. Then again they have so much of it they may not give a ****!
August 10, 2007 at 4:02 pm
Couple of bright spots about Ledezma’s numbers:
1: Those are better than Boomer’s!
2: He’s left handed, and the Reds are significantly worse against lefties than righties.
3: The numbers he compiled came in the much tougher league against lineups with DH’s.
All in all, I’m cautiously optimistic. Which is of course the kiss of death.
August 10, 2007 at 4:14 pm
God hates us. Lining into a double play?!?! Why?
August 10, 2007 at 4:18 pm
Now God turns to taunting us, with a two out double behind the lined into double play.
August 10, 2007 at 4:28 pm
I think we are going to find out real fast that Ledezma isnt a good option for starting pitcher.
August 10, 2007 at 4:28 pm
That was still a helluva throw by Cammy from center.
August 10, 2007 at 4:29 pm
And God puts the finishing touches on the taunt by having the Reds score on a double without another hit.
Hmm. Perhaps I am taking this game too seriously.
August 10, 2007 at 4:32 pm
The only difference in the quality of that inning between Belisle and Ledezma was the walk by Ledezma.
August 10, 2007 at 4:35 pm
It’s sad when you feel like the game is over after 2 runs in the 1st inning, but that’s what this offense has done to me.
August 10, 2007 at 4:37 pm
According to protrade live, we have a 23% chance of winning now. That’s assuming everything about the situation is average. So, yeah, the average team loses the game where they go down by 2 runs in the first inning more than 3 out of 4 times.
August 10, 2007 at 4:37 pm
13: I agree, its like I have already given up on this game
August 10, 2007 at 4:41 pm
I asked a while back what you “non-San Diegans” do to watch the games since i recently moved. I caved and got the MLB.tv package and hooked my laptop up to my LCD TV and it actually looks pretty good, probably as good as the regular extra innings package since the games arent in HD
August 10, 2007 at 4:43 pm
There’s that quality Barrett defense
August 10, 2007 at 4:44 pm
Watching Ledezma, I’m reminded of one of my favorite lines from Bochy: I had my outfielders get into a 3 point stance — facing the wall.
August 10, 2007 at 4:49 pm
Thanks Barrett. That run is on you.
August 10, 2007 at 4:49 pm
Why did anyone think Ledezma should be starting and not Hensley? I know they wanted fresh arms, but Ledezma’s track record speaks for itself.
August 10, 2007 at 4:51 pm
Man we have seen some ugly baseball lately!
August 10, 2007 at 4:52 pm
20: Hensley couldn’t start because he hadn’t been in the minors for 10 days. If you look at 6, I offered some reasons to think Ledezma was better than the numbers. Also, we’ve given him exactly 2 innings. In the last inning, he struck two guys out, but still gave up a run because of a passed ball and a bunt single. The opposing pitcher pitched equally as bad as him in the first inning, with the exception of a walk, and didn’t give up any runs.
August 10, 2007 at 4:54 pm
Learn to lay down a damn bunt!
August 10, 2007 at 4:55 pm
22.
I think Hensley could have come up because the the DL of Hairston and the Bereavment listing of Brocail. Normally they have to wait 10 days but if there is a DL situation i think that changes it.
August 10, 2007 at 4:55 pm
I am watching the Reds broadcast, anyone watching the Padres? How close was Kouz at 3rd? He looked safe to me.
August 10, 2007 at 4:56 pm
22: Good point.
August 10, 2007 at 4:57 pm
Damn it. I just responded good point to my own post. I meant
24: Good point.
August 10, 2007 at 4:57 pm
25.
He might have gotten a leg in there before the tag but channel 4 didn’t really show it in slow motion.
August 10, 2007 at 4:58 pm
OG!
August 10, 2007 at 4:58 pm
28: Ya they didnt show it in slow-mo either, but it looked like he was in there cause it was a pretty high tag.
August 10, 2007 at 5:03 pm
590 for Junior. I have always liked him, ever since I was in Little League
August 10, 2007 at 5:10 pm
22: His numbers have been bad in the NL with Atlanta as well. I knw the team needed fresh arms, but Hensley should have stayed up, Ledezma could have took Thompson’s spot in the Wells blow up, and I can’t help but feel we have a better start with Hensley out there.
Now it seems the wheels are really starting to come off.
August 10, 2007 at 5:10 pm
Another long night for the ‘pen…
August 10, 2007 at 5:16 pm
Cassel has decent movement on his pitches
August 10, 2007 at 5:19 pm
If you get tired of watching this game, Buffalo is playing @ New Orleans on CBS.
August 10, 2007 at 5:40 pm
Nice tie AGone
August 10, 2007 at 5:40 pm
And go ahead
August 10, 2007 at 5:40 pm
I JUST GOT HOME!!! ADRIAN MOTHER F**KING GONAZLEZ!!!!
August 10, 2007 at 5:40 pm
Wooooooo!!!!!
August 10, 2007 at 5:41 pm
That’s twice that failures by pitchers to get down sac bunts have “caused” home runs making those failures irrelevant. I think we should tell pitchers to intentionally screw up bunts from now on.
August 10, 2007 at 5:45 pm
Anyone else hoping that we can get through this inning and then have the heavens open up? Seriously, we could use a good rain-shortened victory at this point…
August 10, 2007 at 5:46 pm
40: Maybe it will apply to all players and we can have every other batter attempt a bunt, resulting in 2 HR per inning.
August 10, 2007 at 5:51 pm
Yo … just noticed that Brian Lawrence is pitching for Mets tonight …
http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/boxscore?gid=270810121
I’ve not seen Ledezma pitch, but it sure seems to me he’s gotta be better than Lawrence, doesn’t he?
August 10, 2007 at 5:54 pm
Woooo!!!!
August 10, 2007 at 5:54 pm
Khalil and Adrian have quite the battle going on for team lead in homers.
August 10, 2007 at 5:55 pm
haha greeney HATES not being first in team HRs
August 10, 2007 at 5:57 pm
All right, Cassel, time to mess up a sac bunt.
August 10, 2007 at 5:58 pm
#47: Looks like he’s on his way of doing just that.
August 10, 2007 at 6:00 pm
#47: It didn’t work! Whaddup?
August 10, 2007 at 6:01 pm
Hmm, maybe the pitcher needs to actually get the bunt down and force the runner ahead of him, reaching base himself. Let’s try that next time, Cassel.
August 10, 2007 at 6:12 pm
Haha Mark Bellhorn!
August 10, 2007 at 6:13 pm
Yo … who is *THAT* PH’ing for the Reds???
August 10, 2007 at 6:13 pm
I —- HATE —- MARK —- BELLLLHOOORRRNNNN!
August 10, 2007 at 6:13 pm
OT: Saints look tough so far this year. As always, ignore the score in pre-season and looking at the players individual plays. They are going to be contenders. Buffalo is playing like crap.
August 10, 2007 at 6:14 pm
How wild was that wild pitch? Should Barrett have caught it? If he should have stopped it, that’s another run lost to his catching abilities.
August 10, 2007 at 6:15 pm
WTF WAS THAT?
August 10, 2007 at 6:15 pm
You gotta be kidding me!
August 10, 2007 at 6:16 pm
OK, I’m calling ‘do overs.’ Can I do that?
August 10, 2007 at 6:16 pm
Meredith has the worst luck ever.
August 10, 2007 at 6:16 pm
What does “singled to pitcher” mean (in the context of what Hopper just did)? Was it a squeeze bunt?
August 10, 2007 at 6:17 pm
60: Slow roller and Meredith couldnt make the play, it wasnt a hit
August 10, 2007 at 6:17 pm
60: Scratch that, it shouldnt had been a hit but it was scored one.
August 10, 2007 at 6:19 pm
Was it really a wild pitch? Would we have gotten 2 on the groundball otherwise??
August 10, 2007 at 6:21 pm
63: It was debateable, but Barrett makes alot of things look like a wild pitch. We would not had turned two, it was basically a bunt with Hopper hitting and he is quick.
August 10, 2007 at 6:21 pm
Adrian is hot tonight.
August 10, 2007 at 6:22 pm
Gonzo looks like he has his stroke back.
August 10, 2007 at 6:23 pm
64: The turning two might have happened on the Bellhorn grounder.
August 10, 2007 at 6:25 pm
67: You are right, I didnt realize which grounder he was talking about.
August 10, 2007 at 6:30 pm
I can only assume from Gameday that was the bloopiest hit ever. That is ok. We were due for some bloopy hits.
August 10, 2007 at 6:30 pm
THANK YOU KG! We needed that run bad.
August 10, 2007 at 6:30 pm
Is Bard really batting right-handed?
August 10, 2007 at 6:31 pm
We need a few insurance runs here.
August 10, 2007 at 6:31 pm
Wasnt much of a no mans land bloop. More of a “flair” if there is much of a difference
August 10, 2007 at 6:32 pm
72: Yup. no idea why.
August 10, 2007 at 6:32 pm
That punch out was the exact same pitch the ump called a ball on the previous pitch. WTF?
August 10, 2007 at 6:34 pm
75: They both looked like strikes to me, the called strike looked like it was up a little more.
August 10, 2007 at 6:35 pm
Seems like this would be a perfect opportunity to bring in Thatcher and let him face two lefties, broken up by a guy that isn’t a great hitter.
August 10, 2007 at 6:35 pm
I thought they were both down the middle low. What do we know. LOL.
August 10, 2007 at 6:37 pm
78: Exactly. They both were too close to take in my opinion. But ya, what do we know.
August 10, 2007 at 6:38 pm
Well, Black, you’re one batter late, but good decision. I’d have preferred Thatcher, but Hampson works, I suppose.
August 10, 2007 at 6:38 pm
78: Nope instead they bring in Hampson?
August 10, 2007 at 6:44 pm
wow
August 10, 2007 at 6:44 pm
Adrian dropped an ‘f-bomb’ on that one. Could clearly read his lips.
August 10, 2007 at 6:44 pm
Time to bring in Bell.
August 10, 2007 at 6:46 pm
i dropped an f-bomb on that one as well
August 10, 2007 at 6:47 pm
So did I!!!
August 10, 2007 at 6:48 pm
98 MPH gas from the big horse
August 10, 2007 at 6:51 pm
97 MPH, Bell had the good stuff tonight
August 10, 2007 at 6:51 pm
87 … here’s what “98 MPH gas” looks like on yahoo …
- H. Bell relieved J. Hampson
- E. Encarnacion struck out swinging
- A. Gonzalez struck out swinging
… *very* nice!
August 10, 2007 at 6:52 pm
THAT WAS THE FREAKING SHIZNITZ!!!
August 10, 2007 at 6:52 pm
Dogs getting shutout thru 6 by Adam Wainwright …

August 10, 2007 at 6:53 pm
89: I feel your pain, thats why I caved and got MLB.tv
August 10, 2007 at 6:57 pm
91: 7 innings… Now the Card’s need to score…
August 10, 2007 at 7:00 pm
Our favorite “Jack” hit #18 and has 7 RsBI tonight …
http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/boxscore?gid=270810106
August 10, 2007 at 7:01 pm
Wow 16-10
August 10, 2007 at 7:02 pm
Cust is on my fantasy bench too… bummer
August 10, 2007 at 7:09 pm
OT: Bills up on the Saints 10-3 toward the end of the 3rd. However, the first quarter was all Saints. The first quarter is what really counts in looking at the suspected starters.
Another note: Chargers are ranked 2nd only because we got knocked out by them in the play-offs. Most would say we look like Super Bowl favorites this year.
OK, this is my favorite time of the year because I get Padres and Chargers at the same time. My wife thinks I’m nuts right now for owning 5 TVs.
August 10, 2007 at 7:11 pm
#97: “Knocked out by NE 24-21.”
August 10, 2007 at 7:14 pm
I cant wait for the season opener against the Bears. I am a huge Bears fan, but I love the Chargers too.
August 10, 2007 at 7:17 pm
I don’t like these one run games. Unfortunately, that’s how most of this season has been.
August 10, 2007 at 7:19 pm
#99: I used to live in the North Chicago area and was a Cubs and Bears fan until I moved to San Diego almost 25 years ago.
August 10, 2007 at 7:21 pm
Damn, I thought he crushed that.
August 10, 2007 at 7:21 pm
Matt V fans will enjoy this …
http://awfulannouncing.blogspo.....ashes.html
… be sure to find the link to his “response” … good stuff!
August 10, 2007 at 7:22 pm
102 … who “he”?
August 10, 2007 at 7:24 pm
LM forgive me, but the fly ball to left. I’m multi-tasking and didn’t see who hit it.
August 10, 2007 at 7:24 pm
101: My whole family are Northside transplants to Southern California. The love for the Bears and Cubs still runs in my blood, but because I have spent most my life here, I lose the Friars and the Chargers. I was really hoping for the Bears/Chargers Superbowl last year. Maybe this year…
August 10, 2007 at 7:31 pm
106 … “lose”? Methinks that’s an interesting typo
August 10, 2007 at 7:33 pm
Come on Hoff!
August 10, 2007 at 7:33 pm
#103: The comments in that link were interesting. I’m going to revisit when I have some time. Thanks.
August 10, 2007 at 7:34 pm
#106: Thank God they didn’t raise you as a White Sox fan!
