You already know this, but Kevin Kouzmanoff is quietly putting together a nice little season. His overall numbers are masked by a miserable start, but since May 1, he’s been hanging with some pretty decent company:
| Player | AB | BA | OBP | SLG | ISO | XB/H | AB/HR |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Stats are courtesy of Baseball-Reference. | |||||||
| Mike Lowell | 198 | .288 | .339 | .500 | .212 | .404 | 22.0 |
| Troy Glaus | 174 | .264 | .359 | .471 | .207 | .435 | 21.8 |
| Kevin Kouzmanoff | 150 | .273 | .335 | .473 | .200 | .415 | 25.0 |
| Garrett Atkins | 212 | .259 | .331 | .472 | .213 | .418 | 19.3 |
| Adrian Beltre | 187 | .267 | .313 | .471 | .204 | .480 | 26.7 |
| Ryan Zimmerman | 232 | .254 | .303 | .478 | .224 | .458 | 19.3 |
| Eric Chavez | 209 | .239 | .311 | .445 | .206 | .480 | 23.2 |
| Scott Rolen | 167 | .281 | .360 | .389 | .108 | .277 | 83.5 |
I still like Lowell as a long-term offensive comp for Kouz. I also like a win today. Go Padres!

Interesting… and alot of people have been saying Troy Glaus’ name recently.
July 5, 2007 at 11:49 am
I am cautiously optimistic on KK. Some splits that broaden the picture:
OPS by Month
Apr: 354
May: 951
Jun: 706
Jul: 606
The best case explanation of the numbers is that Apr = adjustment period, May = representative of what could come, Jun = injury, slowed him down; Jul = small sample size.
On the other side, he has not really been a strong hitter since May. So it would feel great to see him put together a solid July.
Also, his splits are bit troubling:
LHP: 841
RHP: 591
We don’t want a platoon guy, but an everyday guy, but it might suggest some more starts for Branyan against RHP, to get some of his confidence back.
July 5, 2007 at 12:01 pm
Branyan is 8 for his last 50. Almost all of his PA this year have come against RHP and he is hitting .187 against them; he is 3 for 9 versus LHP. Stick with Kouz.
July 5, 2007 at 12:10 pm
3: Agreed. Kouz is our best 3rd baseman, we are just going to have to deal with it. He will come around. Hotter months generally mean hotter bats.
July 5, 2007 at 12:24 pm
The thing that amazes me about Branyan is how many walks he still gets. This year, I’ve seen him swing at so many pitches out of the strike zone, and he has a huge hole inside, so why haven’t pitchers adjusted to that and keep pounding him on inside part of plate, middle up, and then complement that with some low and away soft stuff and fastballs way up? Very little reason to walk him.
July 5, 2007 at 12:30 pm
Branyan gets the start at third today
July 5, 2007 at 12:32 pm
Speaking of our favorite TTO posterboy, he’s starting today at third. It makes sense against the righty side-armer Kim.
July 5, 2007 at 12:39 pm
Jake with his first K. He’s handled the first two batters well, lets see how he does with Cabrera.
July 5, 2007 at 12:46 pm
Man, the Marlins’ ineptitude is simply astonishing. I’ll take it!
July 5, 2007 at 12:46 pm
BroBI!
July 5, 2007 at 12:47 pm
It’s hard to imagine this game getting off to a better start.
July 5, 2007 at 12:47 pm
come on Buddy call the squeeze play!
July 5, 2007 at 12:49 pm
bleh I really think that when ever the padres have a man on third and less than 2 outs they need to start squeezing people home this is just getting sad!
July 5, 2007 at 12:49 pm
I would have liked to see A-Gon get an RBI there, but oh well. We’ve gotta get that man in from third.
July 5, 2007 at 12:50 pm
Ugh. C’mon Khalil. Do what the two before you couldn’t.
July 5, 2007 at 12:50 pm
two straight strikeouts with a man standing on third!
July 5, 2007 at 12:51 pm
At least Khalil put the ball in play. Damn, you really would have liked to get 2 there, but I’ll take one.
July 5, 2007 at 12:52 pm
This is what is going to kill the padres in the post season, you have to capatalize, they wont be facing guys like Kim in October.
July 5, 2007 at 12:55 pm
Over his career Kim has allowed a .627 OPS to righties and an .809 OPS to lefties. Adrian has got to come through there.
July 5, 2007 at 12:55 pm
18: I’m not so sure. They still manage to win games, against good teams or bad teams. We don’t score a lot of runs, but we make the ones we score count. Our run differential clearly shows the value of the runs our team scores.
July 5, 2007 at 12:56 pm
Yeesh, can’t go 0-2 and then walk a guy.
July 5, 2007 at 12:57 pm
Re: 20 they beat the good teams 3, 4 and 5 guys but what aces have they beat this year? The guys who will be pitching in October dont make alot of mistakes so you have to take advantage of them when they do.
July 5, 2007 at 1:01 pm
Ugh. C’mon guys. This is why you have to score that run in the first. Christ.
July 5, 2007 at 1:01 pm
I don’t care if Agon says he needs to play everyday so his BP can pay off, or if Black thinks he does too. He looks tired, slow, and he seems to be guessing at the plate. All he had to do was meet the ball in that at-bat.
Jake, this isn’t the playoffs or a big game against Beckett, why are you flinging the ball all over the place? You’re not going to make it out of the 5th with this pitch count.
July 5, 2007 at 1:02 pm
Yikes, and a poor play by Marcus. Jake had that first guy 0-2 and let him get away. That’s what killed this inning.
July 5, 2007 at 1:03 pm
Yes, the offense needed to do more in the first, but Jake cannot be that wild and expect to succeed. 0-2 and walk a guy on 4 straight? Throwing balls that far outside to Treanor?
July 5, 2007 at 1:05 pm
26: I agree completely about Jake trying to be too cute at times. He’s got to trust his defense and he’s go to trust his stuff. He can’t put runners on like that. With the Marlins’ SLG %, you can’t give them opportunities to plate runners.
July 5, 2007 at 1:05 pm
Oh marcus, what the hell was that
July 5, 2007 at 1:07 pm
Geez, Jake. What the heck with you? Treanor getting RBIs off you. Stop that!
July 5, 2007 at 1:09 pm
24: Agreed. El Hombre is not looking good the last 3 weeks.
July 5, 2007 at 1:11 pm
Well those were 3 productive at bats
July 5, 2007 at 1:14 pm
Is Sledge healthy enough to start now? About a month ago the Giants’ blog mccoveychronicles was previewing a Padres-Giants series and said something about Cruz’s hot start. He sarcastically remarked that Black should definitely keep starting Cruz the rest of the year because of that hot start. It looks like that’s basically what Black has decided to do. It’s a good thing we got Bradley who can actually play everyday.
July 5, 2007 at 1:15 pm
Shocker of shockers, Branyan strikes out on a ball that is (a) inside in his hold and (b) off the plate.
July 5, 2007 at 1:16 pm
hole*
July 5, 2007 at 1:16 pm
Thats a nice quick inning for Jake.
July 5, 2007 at 1:21 pm
Wow this ump looks to be all over the place
July 5, 2007 at 1:22 pm
Nice quick inning for Kim too haha, geez we need to hit
July 5, 2007 at 1:22 pm
36: Are you following using Gameday or watching it?
July 5, 2007 at 1:23 pm
Gameday
July 5, 2007 at 1:23 pm
Man, this is a frustrating start to the game. It’s the freaking Marlins! We should pound them! Brian Giles keeps getting on base but nobody else wants to do something productive on offense. Stop grounding into double plays! Stop striking out!
That is all.
July 5, 2007 at 1:24 pm
Yeah, me too. It must be something about Kim’s delivery and the movement on his ball that messes up the cameras. There’s no way the ump could be this bad, right?
July 5, 2007 at 1:24 pm
dont know
July 5, 2007 at 1:25 pm
its been bad with peavy as well so im not sure.
July 5, 2007 at 1:25 pm
0-2 and you give up a gopherball? Jesus, c’mon Jake. You’ve got to pitch smarter than that.
July 5, 2007 at 1:26 pm
it must be game day there is no way a guy could hit one out that low.
July 5, 2007 at 1:27 pm
I think Anthony might have been onto something, because the Jake Peavy we’ve seen since June has not been then same we saw in April and May.
July 5, 2007 at 1:29 pm
46: he is still killer in away games. I dont know why he has trouble at home.
July 5, 2007 at 1:33 pm
wow who would have thought that kim would have more strikeouts than jake at this point.
July 5, 2007 at 1:34 pm
It like the petco curse is back, they can’t generate offense in the least and poor Jake is out there trying to hold em in with no support. When was the last time the Padres had even a 300 hitter, when? Fire the hitting coach.
July 5, 2007 at 1:35 pm
adrian hit .300 last year.
July 5, 2007 at 1:35 pm
wow did kim really just strikout the side?
July 5, 2007 at 1:35 pm
Its OBVIOUS that Gonzo needs some time off Bud.
“He’s going to keep going out there,” said Black. “He wants to be out there. So unless we see any difference or anything necessitates a day off, then we’ll address it.”
His June average hasnt necessitated this? Or his strikeouts? Lack of power?
July 5, 2007 at 1:36 pm
49: It’s not like Jake is giving the team the best chance to win today. I’m sorry, but he’s pitching like **** right now. Yeah, our offense needs to get it going, but it’s not all on them. We did have a lead today.
July 5, 2007 at 1:36 pm
Fire the hitting coach hahaha
July 5, 2007 at 1:37 pm
Man it would be scary to see where this team might be with even an average pitching staff. Our bats are freaking horrible! Somewhere Dave Magadan is smiling.
July 5, 2007 at 1:37 pm
Re: 52 whats the point of giving him a day off at this point, 3 more games to the ASB.
July 5, 2007 at 1:37 pm
This is an abysmal, abysmal performance by this team. I’m embarrassed for them right now.
And we have got to find a way to limit Peavy’s exposure to day games. This is bordering on absurd. You don’t continue to construct lineups that can’t perform, day-in and day-out, why should we continue to send out a pitcher who has demonstrated considerably over the last 4 seasons that he pitches poorly in day games?
July 5, 2007 at 1:38 pm
Must have been a career year for him because he’s down to 266 now.
July 5, 2007 at 1:38 pm
53: a 1-0 lead. That wont win everyday. 4 or 5 wins with this team everyday. You gotta blame the offense if Jake pitches 6 or 7 with 3 ER. That should give your team the chance to win.
July 5, 2007 at 1:38 pm
Re: 57 if its his turn in the roation he has to go day game or not.
July 5, 2007 at 1:39 pm
Keith Law just “dissed” Chris Young. Dude never has anything nice to say about a Padre. Look at his splits last year, analyst sir.
July 5, 2007 at 1:39 pm
58.
Well it was basically his rookie year. What are you getting at?
July 5, 2007 at 1:40 pm
Keith Law is an Idiot
July 5, 2007 at 1:40 pm
57: jake has pitched just fine in day games this year. He has pitched the worst at home, do you want him to skip all his home starts the rest of this year?
July 5, 2007 at 1:40 pm
But when has the offense “picked up” the pitching staff this year, especially Jake, very few times.
July 5, 2007 at 1:41 pm
#60,
Pardon me, but that’s absolute nonsense. We have had a day off almost every week this season, there’s absolutely no way the rotation can’t be shuffled occasionally. Do you think Young has always pitched the day before Peavy?
July 5, 2007 at 1:41 pm
Pitches-strikes - B Kim 56-34; J Peavy 73-49
July 5, 2007 at 1:43 pm
Finally a second hit by a Padres.
July 5, 2007 at 1:44 pm
66: They arent going to mess with days of rest just because it is a day game
July 5, 2007 at 1:44 pm
Re: 66 you get your Ace out there as much as you can, you dont have him skip starts, Jake and C.Y. need to pitch every 5 days.
July 5, 2007 at 1:44 pm
Ok, a double, seems like Cruz at least has a clue.
July 5, 2007 at 1:44 pm
Might be time to start slapping Byung Hyun Kim around the yard like he’s…well…Byung Hyun Kim. Sure is getting old, seeing us make these mediocre pithcers look like the second coming of CY (Cy, not Chris).
July 5, 2007 at 1:45 pm
Well is you can’t hit the ball, guess you can always balk guys over.
July 5, 2007 at 1:46 pm
Ha with that double TW is smiling because of our conversation this morn.
July 5, 2007 at 1:46 pm
If jake gets through the next inning then its a “quality start” you cant blame the loss on him. You have to look at our offense and it not being able to win unles we skunk a team.
July 5, 2007 at 1:46 pm
Well, that was close, come on guys keep it going.
July 5, 2007 at 1:49 pm
After 5 IP: Pitches-strikes - B Kim 65-41; J Peavy 73-49.
This is nuts. Kim threw 9 pitches in the bottom of the fifth inning including a double and a balk. Is his stuff really that good on this day?
July 5, 2007 at 1:50 pm
77: No we are just that bad at hitting. Did you watch last nights game?
July 5, 2007 at 1:51 pm
75.
A quality starts are BS IMO. A 4.5 era is not very good.
July 5, 2007 at 1:53 pm
wow this AB is dave roberts like
July 5, 2007 at 1:54 pm
After 13 pitches geeeeeez
July 5, 2007 at 1:55 pm
79: But only allowing 3 runs is keeping your team in the game and giving them a chance to win. What is BS is our pitchers get no support what so ever.
July 5, 2007 at 1:55 pm
78: Good thing CY kept the Padres in the game last night. I saw from 6th inning on.
Just checked the lineup. Our 3,4,5 hitters are Ks machine right now. Urgh!
July 5, 2007 at 1:55 pm
young drops appeal starts 5 game suspension.
http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/.....id=2927040
July 5, 2007 at 1:56 pm
82.
I agree with you on the run support 100%!
July 5, 2007 at 1:56 pm
Jake is just throwing way, way, way too many pitches. Yeah, our offense is furstrating, but our team lives and dies by our pitching. Nobody (at this point) should be surprised that our offense is less than stellar.
July 5, 2007 at 1:57 pm
Re: 86 I just dont see how the pads will win the the playoffs with this offence.
July 5, 2007 at 1:58 pm
84: So can he even play in the all star game?
86: We should be surprised when they make BAD pitchers look GOOD.
July 5, 2007 at 1:59 pm
After a LONG at bat by Jacobs, Jake gets out of the inning quickly and unharmed.
July 5, 2007 at 2:00 pm
86.
I think you are right but can you really expect the pitching to keep this up all season? At some point they have to start hitting. The pitching performances are almost certainly going to get a little worse as the season goes on because of fatigue and stuff. It’s hard to go out and expect out starters to throw shut outs every night.
July 5, 2007 at 2:00 pm
it seems like Gonzo has had 14 HRs and 50 RBIs for months…
July 5, 2007 at 2:00 pm
Hey Guys, work the count a little to at least give Jake a breather. There are many ways to help, even if you are clueless actually hitting the white thingy.
July 5, 2007 at 2:02 pm
We’ve got to get Adrian out of the lineup, or move him down. He’s killing our offense right now.
We always make bad teams (and bad pitchers) look good. Yet, we still own the best record in the NL. I really don’t understand all of this “woe is me” business on here today. We’re having an off day, it happens. Would you rather hit like the Marlins and pitch like them too?
We’ll do fine in the playoffs. We won’t blow anyone away, but we’ll get enough to get by.
July 5, 2007 at 2:04 pm
93: You arent aloud to complain about terrible hitting? This isnt exactly and off day, its 3-1. If we hit like this in the playoffs, we might win 2 games in the first round this year. Baby steps…
July 5, 2007 at 2:05 pm
93.
I think we’d be happy to just hit better than the worst team in the league. If we can’t get more than 2 hits off of B. Kim than that’s an issue because we definitely won’t get the chance to face a **** like him in the playoffs.
July 5, 2007 at 2:05 pm
6 pitches for Kim that inning. Six friggin’ pitches. Remember the book “Ball Four” where hitters got fined for not taking the first pitch? Kim’s gotta be nearing his season high in pitch count, it seems the Padres could try to make him work for it just a little, right?
This is an abhorrent performance today, as if y’all didn’t notice.
July 5, 2007 at 2:05 pm
Our offense hasn’t been this bad all year. For a while we were middle of the pack in runs scored despite playing in Petco. It’s been somewhat recently that it’s been so abysmally terrible.
July 5, 2007 at 2:06 pm
93 like we did last year and the year before with the same kind of offense, which is to say little or none.
July 5, 2007 at 2:06 pm
Also, hasn’t Kim been historically pretty tough on the Padres? We don’t do well against the funky-arm-angle types.
July 5, 2007 at 2:08 pm
Jake is slowly turning this into a decent outing. 6.1 IP 3 ER 5 K’s
July 5, 2007 at 2:08 pm
Re: 99 hostorical team numbers are BS the last time the padres faced kim most of guys weren’t on the team.
July 5, 2007 at 2:09 pm
99: We dont do well against bad pitchers in general. it like we play down to their level. We have a problem with making BAD guys look like Cy Young candidates
July 5, 2007 at 2:09 pm
Jake has done ok this game we all expect him to go out and pitch a perfict game but its not going to heppen every time.
July 5, 2007 at 2:10 pm
98: Do you see Mark Bellhorn on this team? The Cardinals got hot at the right time and we got cold.
Our offense hasn’t been this bad all year. Anyone remember the Mariners series when we got swept? We put up pretty good offense in that series and had nothing to show for it.
Our team lives and dies by its pitching. The reason our offense has been so abysmal lately is because Adrian has been horrid. He’s the crux of our offense, in sickness and in health. Yeah, I’d love for us to produce better, but this team is capable of winning it all.
July 5, 2007 at 2:10 pm
Re: 99 the Padres dont do well against good pitching either.
July 5, 2007 at 2:10 pm
You see, that is how it is done. That guy is batting 320. Our best hitting is at 277. Mammia
July 5, 2007 at 2:10 pm
99.
Then I guess we face a lot of dudes with “funky arm angles”. When the rest of the world seems to hit him pretty well saying that he has historically pitched well against us doesn’t make me feel better.
July 5, 2007 at 2:12 pm
104: This team right now has no chance of winning it all, we need some consistant bats. Teams in the AL would murder us right now.
July 5, 2007 at 2:13 pm
Dodges another bullet, now come you idiots with bats, work the count, get on, get over or I’ll have to call my dead grandmother to pinch hit.
July 5, 2007 at 2:13 pm
I hope that the whole team is just tiered and the ASB will be the answer to our problems.
July 5, 2007 at 2:13 pm
Here’s a question:
Would you rather have M. Giles at second or Uggla? Giles is a good defensive 2B who runs well and hits reasonably well, current slump notwithstanding. He gets on base and has a tiny bit of pop, but will never hit for a high average.
Uggla is an absolute butcher in the field, will never hit for much average, but has 50 XBH this season, on pace for almost 100. What do you think? How much defense at 2nd do you sacrifice for offense?
July 5, 2007 at 2:13 pm
Way to get out of the jam Jake. 7 IP 3 ER 6 k’s is an outing alot of pitchers would like to have. Lets get some runs and get him some of the supports he deserves. Make him a 10 game winniner dammit
July 5, 2007 at 2:14 pm
there you go mike way to take opne for the team!
July 5, 2007 at 2:14 pm
Thats the way, balks and HBP. We can do it.
July 5, 2007 at 2:14 pm
108: I disagree. Boston didn’t “murder” us in their three game set, and even the Angels have serious problems in their line-up. This team CAN win it all, but they have to play smarter. People like Cameron and Khalil need to get more consistent and hit like they have these past few weeks.
I think Bradley will bring some consistency to this lineup. But I am not running for the door after one bad offensive outing.
July 5, 2007 at 2:15 pm
Re: 115 if Boston had a DH it would have been a different story.
July 5, 2007 at 2:16 pm
115: one?
July 5, 2007 at 2:16 pm
we also would have faced shilling and not wakfield if it was the playoffs
July 5, 2007 at 2:16 pm
Yeah Jake has done a nice job today to salvage a not so hot start!
July 5, 2007 at 2:16 pm
green, utterly worthless with a bat in his hands and MOB. Back to robo swinging. Great.
July 5, 2007 at 2:17 pm
Lets see some of Barret’s mysteriously missing pop
July 5, 2007 at 2:18 pm
116: If Khalil’s ball would have been fair we would have one the first game in that set, adn thus the series. Also, who’s to say that we wouldn’t have played better with a DH.
See, I can play the “if” game too. I would prefer to think about this team positively given their relative success this year.
I’m not trying to get all over people today, but I can’t stand how somber and cynical people get after one bad game. And we haven’t even lost yet!
