You already know this, but Kevin Kouzmanoff is quietly putting together a nice little season. His overall numbers are masked by a miserable start, but since May 1, he’s been hanging with some pretty decent company:

I still like Lowell as a long-term offensive comp for Kouz. I also like a win today. Go Padres!
Anybody think that with Adrian struggling, maybe its a better idea to let Marcus hit and not give away the out there? I know it’s second guessing, but any thoughts?
Dont we normally own benitez?
151: They are trying to spark something. Jump start something. I like seeing marcus sac bunt cause there is a chance he can beat it out and Adrian is still the best hitter on the team even if he has sucked that last month.
No, it’s absolutely impossible for Adrian to need a day off.
150: We dont have anyone that has been playing regularly that is batting .270+ its just sad right now. We can only hope the all star break is perfect timing for our guys.
C’mon Khalil. Your hitting streak is on the line. Just a single. Please get a base hit.
Here is Greene’s chance to not look worthless
Nice walk. Oh god, not roboswinger him self.
and on so it goes with robot swinger. Kahlil, a living nightmare at the plate. I would trade him for a better hitting, lesser shortstop. Shades of shawn bouorghs, there.
159: You say that now.
What are the Pads going to do when Brocail is ready Ring has shown that he is the better pitcher but you cant exactly option brocail to AAA.
allstar ballot is not closed.
161: Move him to DL60? Phantom DL?
159: You know, I can’t stand reactions like that. That’s completely out-of-line. Did you miss the top 10 MLB SS comparisons that GY posted the other day. The one where Khalil ranked like 6th or 7th in OPS+.
I’m sure that Khalil wants nothing but to strike out in that situation. I’m sure he loves stranding runners.
And if you’re gonna get on Khalil’s case for striking out with men on, you’d better be calling for the heads of Adrian and Cameron as well. I hate it when people act like Khalil is completely useless when he is completely not.
Re 162 now not not
161: I bet Hampson goes down. It’s too bad we can’t just have an 11 man staff without Hampson and Brocail when Bradley is activated.
Re: 166 that would mean 6.5 OF which is way to many.
Nice K-cam gets one pitch!
man Kouz needs to hit a HR here.
#159: LOL. Good luck finding one on the market.
Cruz did everything he could. Damn.
Poor day at the plate overall. We’ve got to find a way to get those runners in. But you can’t hang this loss on one member of the offense. Just about everyone struck out in a key situation today.
159: Furthermore, of everyone on the team, Khalil had a better series than almost everyone. In fact, other than Khalil, I’d say the series honors go to Brian Giles for his contributions.
I just really think it’s intellectually dishonest to call Khalil a “nightmare at the plate.” If you truly believe that, you clearly haven’t watched the team this past few weeks.
In fact, let me pose this question. If you could have any short stop in our division, who would it be, and why?
173: You cant go wrong with Khalil, Furcal or Tulowiski. We have some good SS in our division, all play different roles though.
173: Khalil can be a nightmare at the plate. We have all seen it. We he makes contact with the ball though he normally puts a pretty sweet swing on it.
173.
Well if i’m not paying for him… I’d go with Furcal. He is good defesively and he’s that leadoff annoying fast guy I’d like to have. I think i’d also rather have Stephen Drew and maybe Troy Tulowitski both for their long term potential. I’m not bagging on Khalil because I like him but I think Furcal is better all around now and the 2 young guys have superstar potential offensively.
Man, the hitters were just horrible at the plate today.
They saw a total of 125 pitches, 27 of which belong to Benitez, and 77 to Kim.
The Marlins, otoh, saw 142 pitches, 110 of which were Jake’s.
That’s just poor plate discipline by the Padres’ hitters. Of Kim’s 77 pitches, OG saw 14 of them, NOG saw 9 and had a GiDP. Even Jake got to see 10 pitches from Kim. That’s for a total of 33 of 77 pitches (43%) to 3 batters. What were the rest of the lineup doing?
It’s a good thing this is only one game and not a playoff variety at that.
Young Makes the All Star Game
CY in the ALL STAR GAME.
Dang it. I’ve got scooped.
NL West SS
Player AB Avg OBP SLG OPS xBH
Furcal 312 .277 .344 .363 .707 20
Tulowitzki 302 .285 .358 .437 .795 25
Greene 301 .243 .280 .472 .752 38
Drew 290 .245 .310 .369 .679 25
Vizquel 274 .230 .281 .292 .573 12
Given the comparison, I can see that only Tulo has a better OPS. However, Khalil has far outslugged all of the SS in the NL West and I think he’s arguably the best defender of the lot.
181: Like I said you cant go wrong with Furcal, Tulowiski or Greene. We have a good crop here in the NL west. I think Furcal or Tulo would fit out team a bit better and provide a bit more consistancy. For me its a tie for Furcal or Greene on defense, but I think i would take Tulo over all of them because he is young and very promising and a dirtbag. The only thing that scares me about Greene is injury and not hitting consistantly.
#159, etc. Greene is the team offensive (positive definition) leader where it seems to matter most this year.
An interesting read on all this talk about pitching to contact and fewer Ks.

The Padres are on course to score 695 runs, 3rd highest in the past 6 years (24> basic RC) despite having the lowest BA,OBP,2nd lowest BB/PA and minimal +SLG% in 6 years. Seems to be ISO which is 10pts higher than average. All #’s on BB Prospectus. WE project 11 more runs than 2005 despite -15 BA,-21 OBP, -1 SLG & 10% less BB/PA. ISO? 148in 07 to 134 in 05.
