Day game for the Padres. You know, so the big network can broadcast their game against the Braves, help those guys get a little national exposure…
David Wells looks to continue his success at home (.260/.305/.357, 2.56 ERA in eight starts), while Jo-Jo Reyes makes his big-league debut for Atlanta. Go Padres!
Picking up where last year's version left off, the Ducksnorts 2008 Baseball Annual provides in-depth analysis of and commentary on the San Diego Padres. Get your copy today.

Krasovic’s Notebook today says Milton Bradley is “probable” to start today … and I posted a few comments about recent draftees over here …
http://ducksnorts.com/blog/200.....l#comments
July 7, 2007 at 9:10 am
Krasovic also noted that the PaleHose want Khalil and Liney for Dye … “End of discussion”.
July 7, 2007 at 9:21 am
Greene and Linebrink for Dye? I want some of what the White Sox are smoking…
July 7, 2007 at 9:34 am
One of the fascinating points in the Krasovic article is something that I’ve been thinking about for a while: Barrett and Bradley both will return draft picks if they don’t re-sign. Seems plausible to me that those picks could be worth more than Andrew Brown and Kyler Burke. Plus we get a half-season of two fairly established offensive players whose former teams are flipping most of the bill.
Nice.
July 7, 2007 at 9:37 am
4: You’re absolutely right Geoff. I don’t think that every major league team thinks about compensatory picks the way that the Padres do. Barrett and Bradley might not have been bad trades even if they never played a game for us…
July 7, 2007 at 9:44 am
Matt and Tony mentioned something interseting last night in Andruw jones 47 PA’s at petco 9 of them have resulted in HR’s. Im not sure how much he will cost this off season but that mat be something the Pads want to look at.
July 7, 2007 at 9:52 am
oops sorry 57 PA’s but he is also has an OPS of 1.399
July 7, 2007 at 10:08 am
Speaking of Khalil, exactly one player from the 2002 draft has become a big-league starting shortstop:
http://www.baseball-reference......ype=junreg
July 7, 2007 at 11:00 am
Here are the top 10 performers from the first round of the ‘02 draft as measured by win shares:
1. Khalil Greene, 61 WS (13th pick)
2. Nick Swisher, 45 (16th)
3. Mark Teahen, 40 (39th)
4. Jeff Francoeur, 39 (23rd)
5. Scott Kazmir, 34 (15th)
6(t). Prince Fielder, 33 (7th)
6(t). Joe Blanton, 33 (24th)
8. Jeff Francis, 29 (9th)
9. Matt Cain, 23 (25th)
10. B.J. Upton, 18 (2nd)
Kinda interesting…
July 7, 2007 at 12:35 pm
Jenga is in the starting line-up, batting fifth and playing left field. I hope he is fully healed, I can’t see much of a downside in letting him rest through the break.
July 7, 2007 at 12:58 pm
I am angry. Our local FOX station (Denver) has apparently decided that I wanted to see the f&*$*& yankees and angels instead of the Padres…
July 7, 2007 at 1:03 pm
#11: Sucks being you BZ.
July 7, 2007 at 1:15 pm
RE 11: Same here. I’m in Oklahoma, and the Braves are the third closest National League team to here. Apparently, I’d rather watch the Yankees and Angels instead, two teams about as far away from here as a Major League team can be.
July 7, 2007 at 1:18 pm
KG just crushed that.
July 7, 2007 at 1:37 pm
13. man, I live in Temecula, about 400 yards away from the San Diego county line, and I’m getting the lame yankee game too.
July 7, 2007 at 1:38 pm
9: And Keith Law in reviewing the 2002 draft called Greene a borderline bust.
Marc Normandin of BPro yesterday made the excellent point that Greene has a .265 EQA (.260 is league average) and plays good to great defense at short, so he’s a really rare case of an above average player with an OBP under .300.
July 7, 2007 at 1:44 pm
Great. I guess it’s good that we have a 4 day break coming up because our bullpen is going to need it.
July 7, 2007 at 1:45 pm
Joe West’s crew is notorious for ejecting player.
July 7, 2007 at 1:46 pm
Brocail? CRAP.
July 7, 2007 at 1:47 pm
Nice going Wells. Neither pitch you could have been complaining about were strikes. Francouer hits a crappy pitch out, but is that a reason to get tossed out of the game? And instead of trying to win this game, we are going to insert Brocail, fresh off the DL. On a day we could use a Hampson, he’s no longer here. *sigh* This homestand is heading south.
July 7, 2007 at 1:47 pm
18: David Wells is also notorious for being an idiot and yelling at umpires.
July 7, 2007 at 1:47 pm
Im at the game today. Cant tell if boomer was getting sqeezed or not, but he was livid. I havent seen a guy blow like that in a while
July 7, 2007 at 1:49 pm
Boomer needs to stop complaining to the umps. He got away with showing them up a couple times on Monday, but ran into a guy with a shorter fuse today. It ain’t worth it.
July 7, 2007 at 1:49 pm
Thanks Fox.
We’re getting the lame Yankees game here in Pittsburgh as well.
I guess I should move to San Diego and be done with it.
July 7, 2007 at 1:49 pm
I’m not a Wells fan at all … I just don’t think he shoulda been yap’in to the ump in the first place … but as soon as I saw him wigglin’ his fingers at the ump, I thought he was gone …
July 7, 2007 at 1:50 pm
22: He wasn’t getting squeezed. There were a couple pitches to Andruw that could have gone as strikes, but technically they didn’t look close to the strike zone.
July 7, 2007 at 1:50 pm
20: We couldn’t really use the Hampson because he pitched three innings of relief last night. We could definitely use a Hampson, but Brocail probably fills that role well enough. Everyone gets four days off after tomorrow’s game, too. Still, yeah, Wells is an idiot.
July 7, 2007 at 1:51 pm
After seeing the replay over and over, the ump was unjustified in throwing out Wells. Reading Boomer’s lips, he didn’t say anything offensive. I think it’s about time to start ejecting umps and taking money from them. Again, I hate Joe West’s crew.
July 7, 2007 at 1:51 pm
It was not smart by Wells. It started out as a conversation, but then the umpire told him to get back on the mound and then Wells started wiggling his finger to him to get him to come back. Wells clearly showed him up by that point. Now we have to pray that Brocail can get us through the next inning or so without giving up more runs.
July 7, 2007 at 1:53 pm
Maybe Wells just wanted to start his All-Star break a little early. (Kudos to the dreaded Fox, by the way, for showing Wells sitting down on the padded wall next to the on-deck circle before his at-bat today. I noticed him doing that on Monday night. Very professional.)
July 7, 2007 at 1:56 pm
Anything Boomer did, didn’t warrent him getting tossed.
July 7, 2007 at 1:59 pm
Wells’ ejection could actually work to our advantage now. Our bullpen is definitely better than Wells, and eating it up isn’t much of a concern because we have the All-Star break in a day. Each time through the lineup we’ll pinch hit for the pitcher, improving the offense as well.
July 7, 2007 at 2:00 pm
Umpires need to remember that they are not the center of attention. Fans don’t pay to see them. But Wells isn’t the problem, our bats are. We HAVE to hit!! This is so anemic. I almost feel like the game is over. We rarely score more than a couple of runs.
July 7, 2007 at 2:00 pm
#32: I totally agree with that.
July 7, 2007 at 2:00 pm
31: The umpire clearly in effect told Boomer that he didn’t want to hear anymore of it, and told him to go get back on the mound, this conversation was over. He walked away from Boomer, Boomer then started yelling at him to come back and signaling with his finger to “come here.” That’s showing up an umpire that in effect told him that the conversation is over.
Boomer has been yelling at umpires for weeks now, and it wouldn’t surprise me that the umpires felt the need to run him to tell him who’s boss.
July 7, 2007 at 2:03 pm
Oh Cammmyyyyyyyyyyy!
July 7, 2007 at 2:03 pm
WOW! A hit with runners in scoring position and no outs! Nice shot Cammy!
July 7, 2007 at 2:03 pm
Cammy goes yard! The wind must be blowing out today boys and girls!
July 7, 2007 at 2:04 pm
CAMMMMMY!
July 7, 2007 at 2:04 pm
See. Boomer’s ejection made Reyes wild and inspired Cameron to hit the homer.
On a more serious note, c’mon Cameron, all we needed there was a productive out.
July 7, 2007 at 2:06 pm
Infield hit for Bradley, now Khalil’s up there. Keep making this guy look like he’s making his first start, Pads!
July 7, 2007 at 2:07 pm
Alright KG!!!!
July 7, 2007 at 2:08 pm
And a base hit for Khalil! Is it possible that we can play the death by singles game as well?
No, Cox, leave Jo-Jo in!
July 7, 2007 at 2:08 pm
Darn you, Bobby Cox! Give Jo Jo a chance to give up some more runs, er…a chance to work his way out of a jam. Yeah, that’s the ticket, work out of a jam.
July 7, 2007 at 2:09 pm
Quick hook from Cox. He must have figured if a crappy offense like the Pads are battering this kid around, I have to get him out of there.
July 7, 2007 at 2:10 pm
And Bard resorts to form, by weakly tapping it out to the SS.
July 7, 2007 at 2:11 pm
43: Nope, we can’t. Too many guys on the team that ground into double plays. Although Bard avoided it there.
July 7, 2007 at 2:13 pm
Nice shot by Kouz, too bad Andruw didn’t drop it.
July 7, 2007 at 2:13 pm
Nice sac for Kouz.
July 7, 2007 at 2:14 pm
Way to not strike out or ground into a double play, Kouz!
July 7, 2007 at 2:23 pm
That’s enough Brocail for me! Pinch hit time…
July 7, 2007 at 2:24 pm
Nice job working out of that jam, Brocail.
Let’s not press our luck and stretch him another inning though, mmkay?
July 7, 2007 at 2:25 pm
51: I hope we get to pinch hit for him this inning! That would mean we made it through almost the entire lineup.
July 7, 2007 at 2:26 pm
51: Sounds good to me. Of course, it would require batting around this inning, but hey, who said getting Brocail out of this game would be easy.
July 7, 2007 at 2:30 pm
Welcome to Petco, Bradley. You’re gonna have to hit it harder than that, I’m afraid.
July 7, 2007 at 2:37 pm
The Braves just did us a huge favor by turning in that Padres-esque inning there. 3 outs on 4 pitches, bailing out Brocail.
July 7, 2007 at 2:38 pm
Brocail turned into the WormBurner 3000. Every single out came via ground ball (except of his strikeout, obviously).
July 7, 2007 at 2:38 pm
Okay, never mind. Brocail with a very nice, quick inning there.
Now let’s get some more runs on the board and get to Brocail’s spot in the lineup.
July 7, 2007 at 2:40 pm
It will be very difficult to not get to Brocail’s spot in the lineup this inning, fortunately. He’s up third.
July 7, 2007 at 2:43 pm
Haha, didn’t realize that the pitcher’s spot was up 3rd. Even the worst Padres offense couldn’t prevent the 3rd batter from getting an AB.
July 7, 2007 at 2:45 pm
any word yet on who the all-star game starter is for the NL? watching the Angels/Yanks game (getting screwed like everyone else) and it seems that Lackey is the AL Starter…
July 7, 2007 at 2:48 pm
What’s up with the ump all of a sudden expanding the strike zone for a guy that threw four straight balls?
July 7, 2007 at 2:50 pm
61: Wow, Haren got screwed. He’s been easily the best pitcher in the league this year. Lackey’s been the 11th best in the AL, by VORP. Oh well, at least it’s not Josh Beckett (16th in the AL by VORP, but with a pretty 12 wins).
July 7, 2007 at 2:52 pm
63: You know, I might be wrong. I’m wasn’t paying close attention to the TV. You’re right, Lackey would make no sense over Harren or Beckett….
July 7, 2007 at 2:57 pm
Wow Gameday had that second pitch of Bell’s that was called a ball right down the middle. Too high?
July 7, 2007 at 2:58 pm
65: Looked good to me. A little bit below the belt.
Crap.
July 7, 2007 at 2:59 pm
Well, you can’t keep giving Andruw Jones chances with 2 runners on…. still, Gameday shows that that pitch was way off the plate…
July 7, 2007 at 3:01 pm
The Braves have scored 4 runs today on shots that were pitches well out of the zone. Francouer’s HR was at his shoes and Andruw swings at a slider a little up but well outside.
July 7, 2007 at 3:01 pm
It was outside, Andruw more or less flailed like the previous pitch, but this one was up a bit, he’s a big strong hitter and Petco has a real big outfield.
July 7, 2007 at 3:05 pm
ADRIAN!!!!! that looks like the Adrian we all know and love.
July 7, 2007 at 3:06 pm
Yup, Bud was right. A night off certainly did NO good for Adrian. 3 times on base? Worthless.
July 7, 2007 at 3:07 pm
We REALLY need to get the score in NOW.
July 7, 2007 at 3:08 pm
Come on Jenga!
July 7, 2007 at 3:08 pm
How about connecting for 3, Connect 4?
July 7, 2007 at 3:08 pm
Let’s go Jenga.. clap… clap. clap clap clap
Let’s go Jenga.. clap….clap. clap clap clap.
July 7, 2007 at 3:10 pm
Bradley connected four balls to draw the walk. We’ll take it.
July 7, 2007 at 3:11 pm
Okay KG - prove me wrong. Be Clutch!
July 7, 2007 at 3:11 pm
I just saw the replay of Bradley’s catch earlier where it was bobbled between him and Cameron…that’s pretty impressive. I like what i’m seeing from him already.
July 7, 2007 at 3:11 pm
Bases full of Padres for Greene - let’s hope Cox chooses the wrong arm from the ‘pen.
And let’s hope the Friar isn’t standing behind home plate when Fox gets back from commercial.
July 7, 2007 at 3:12 pm
Boot up that base hit program Khalilbot!
July 7, 2007 at 3:12 pm
80: LOL
July 7, 2007 at 3:15 pm
Thank you for that bad defense. That was the well placed ground ball we needed.
July 7, 2007 at 3:15 pm
Suh-weet! Gotta love gifts from the defense.
July 7, 2007 at 3:16 pm
Okay, not the best hitting, but we’ll take it.
July 7, 2007 at 3:16 pm
Wow. We’ll take it. Was it at least hit hard?
July 7, 2007 at 3:17 pm
85. No, if if were hit any harder it would have been a sure DP.
July 7, 2007 at 3:17 pm
Where was the force attempted?
July 7, 2007 at 3:18 pm
85: no, it was a weak grounder to second off of a breaking pitch that he hung with. If he had hit it harder it may have been a double play but since it was so weak that allowed bradley to get to 2nd.
July 7, 2007 at 3:18 pm
87: Second baseman awkwardly flipped to shortstop and pulled him away from the bag.
July 7, 2007 at 3:22 pm
Koooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!
July 7, 2007 at 3:23 pm
KOUZ!!!!!! Man he seems to hit well with the bases loaded.
July 7, 2007 at 3:23 pm
Kooouuuuzzzzzzzzzzz
July 7, 2007 at 3:23 pm
KOOOUUUUUZZZ!!!
July 7, 2007 at 3:23 pm
KOOOOOOOOOOUUUUZ!!!!
July 7, 2007 at 3:23 pm
KOUZ!!!
July 7, 2007 at 3:23 pm
That was a great AB by Kouz after fouling the previous pitch off his foot.
July 7, 2007 at 3:25 pm
I am convinced that Cruz should not bat from the left hand side of the plate any more this season. He looks terrible.
July 7, 2007 at 3:26 pm
And then there’s Cruz to strike out off the bench. Oh well, the lead is ours again!
July 7, 2007 at 3:29 pm
I don’t remember Scotty using his changeup that much the last few years. From what i’ve seen of it lately it looks pretty darn good. Maybe Trevor has been teaching him.
July 7, 2007 at 3:35 pm
Judging from Gameday, this umpire has been pretty terrible for both teams.
July 7, 2007 at 3:49 pm
DING!
July 7, 2007 at 3:49 pm
That was fun!
July 7, 2007 at 3:52 pm
Wow - Chevy player of the game = entire Padres offense. Not too often you could even think of that being the case.
I love wins. It’d be great to take the series tomorrow and end the first half on a high note.
July 7, 2007 at 3:53 pm
Victory! In which the offense scored a bunch of runs!
July 7, 2007 at 3:53 pm
Good show by the Padres. Wells’ ejection and a shaky outing by Bell get out-weighed by some timely hitting (and 3 innings by Brocail!). How nice would it be to win 50 games before the All-Star Break?! Here’s to a nice outing by Maddux and the ‘pen tomorrow.

July 7, 2007 at 9:52 pm
Fun game; we were in Sect. 316. A few quick notes:
–I’m amazed that today is the first time Wells has been tossed this year; he makes a pretty big show of his displeasure with the strike zone at least once a game and it finally cost him.
–Tremendous performance by Brocail coming off the DL and working three solid innings to keep the Pads close.
–The catch by Bradley was insane. It looked like Cameron’s ball, but for Bradley to grab that thing barehanded after it came loose — just wow…
–Khalil now leads the team in homers.
–Kouzmanoff’s at-bat in the seventh was great. He just kept battling until he got something he c
