Re: “who cares how good Branyan’s OPS is”
I do. You should. The team does. OPS is a rough measure of how often Branyan is getting on base, and how many bases he’s accumulating when he gets hits. A .300 hitter who never walks and only hits singles is way less valuable than Branyan hitting .202, getting on base at .327, and slugging .437. Even if he strikes out in a third of his plate appearances.

Also, judging people on their last 20 plate appearances is not a good evaluation tool. Sledge is hitting .252/.340/.441 against righties on the season, which is excellent for a bench bat.

If you want to talk about people struggling, Cruz has OPS-ed .336 for the month of July, and he hasn’t hit lefties or righties very well this year. Taking a bigger sample size and looking at his whole career lets us know he’ll probably start hitting lefties better, making him a useful bench bat.

For all the love for Bocachica, he hit .238/.294/.349 in 63 AB while here.

Our bench is actually pretty balanced and solid now, with 2 decent right-handed bats (Cruz and the catcher not starting) and 2 decent lefty bats (Sledge and Branyan).
