This day in Padres history:
1976: Rookie right-hander Butch Metzger, in relief of Randy Jones, strikes out the only batter he faces and picks up the win thanks to a Dave Winfield double with one out in the bottom of the ninth. Metzger improves his record to 8-0 on the season and 10-0 for his career.
1979: Paul Dade singles home Ozzie Smith to beat the Expos, 4-3, in 14 innings. Six future Hall of Famers play in the game: Tony Perez, Gary Carter, Smith, Winfield, Gaylord Perry, and Rollie Fingers.
1988: The Padres beat the Cubs, 2-1, at Wrigley Field. Rookie second baseman Roberto Alomar singles home Marvell Wynne in the second inning to provide the margin of victory. Mark Davis saves the game for Jimmy Jones, who beats Rick Sutcliffe.
1990: Bruce Hurst spins a two-hit shutout over the visiting Reds, as the Padres roll to a 10-0 victory.
1993: The Padres, still reeling from the recent trades of Gary Sheffield and Fred McGriff, beat the Expos, 11-3. Derek Bell, Bob Geren, and Ricky Gutierrez all go deep for San Diego, while Tim Worrell notches his first big-league victory.
2001: All that stands between the Padres and a Randy Johnson no-hitter is Bubba Trammell’s first inning single to right-center. Arizona wins, 11-0; Johnson strikes out 16 batters.

Early runs! Way to go Mike!
Now let’s get CY to throw a complete game so no one has a chance to blow the lead.
July 24, 2007 at 6:18 pm
I just remembered there’s actually no hope of victory tonight, though, since Barrett is starting.
July 24, 2007 at 6:20 pm
1: 9 IP for CY would be just what we need
July 24, 2007 at 6:45 pm
Dude we jinxed it. CY out after 2 innings… i guess he is hurt
July 24, 2007 at 6:53 pm
OK, this game has taken on a bad aura. I hope Hampson can hold up.
July 24, 2007 at 6:54 pm
I blame this on Barrett. It was his GIDP that caused CY to get hurt.
July 24, 2007 at 6:59 pm
FWIW - Kouz’s numbers for the year are now above his career stats (230 vs 227 BA / 700 vs 699 OPS)
It’s all up from here…
July 24, 2007 at 7:00 pm
This is when our pen needs to rebound after last night
July 24, 2007 at 7:01 pm
7: 10 HRs is nice too
July 24, 2007 at 7:02 pm
I just got home. Any word on CY?
July 24, 2007 at 7:04 pm
Still waiting….
July 24, 2007 at 7:12 pm
For those not watching the broadcast on Ch 4, they just said CY has a left oblique strain, so not too serious.
July 24, 2007 at 7:22 pm
That’s good, I guess.
July 24, 2007 at 7:24 pm
In other news, Young lowered his league-leading ERA to 1.82.
July 24, 2007 at 7:39 pm
Not to be a buzzkill, but an oblique strain can actually be quite bothersome, especially for a pitcher. BTW, how many times this year has Justin Hampson come on in an emergency role and stepped up big time ! This is one pickup that KT should be congratulated for..
July 24, 2007 at 7:46 pm
GY didn’t see much of a Portland Beaver game tonight …
http://web.minorleaguebaseball.....p;did=milb
… a 6-1 loss
July 24, 2007 at 7:48 pm
Awesome … as advertised in comments in an earlier thread … Yefri (the Great) is in Eugene …
http://web.minorleaguebaseball.....x_eugasx_1
… and he’s hit a 2-run HR in his first AB at the new level … after finishing his Rookie-level career at .340/.404/.500!
July 24, 2007 at 7:50 pm
15: Almost all KT’s bullpen pick ups are good. A strain shouldnt be too bothersome, they just need to be careful with him. Pulling him early was the right thing to do. He should make his next start.
Blum isnt going to let Marcus get his job back. This is really how Blum should be used. He did well last year while KG was hurt and this year he is stepping up when Marcus is playing horribly.
July 24, 2007 at 7:50 pm
Now I have to worry through an inning of Brocail against the heart of the Rockies’ lineup.
July 24, 2007 at 7:50 pm
re: This is one of many he should be congratulated for.
July 24, 2007 at 7:51 pm
Do you suppose Colorado purposely let Blum get on so they could force Black to PH for Cameron, knowing that there aren’t many good options left in the pen to get to Trevor?
Bell, Linebrink and Meredith all pitched yesterday and only Bell did well.
Cameron for 1/3 of an inning was stupid.
July 24, 2007 at 7:52 pm
here come the Brocail breakdown
July 24, 2007 at 7:54 pm
21: I agree it seems like a wretched waste of resources, but his hands became tied as soon as Blum got on. If anything Blum should have swung at three pitches and sat down.
July 24, 2007 at 7:54 pm
Should he give up the go-ahead home run to the shortstop or the pinch hitter?
July 24, 2007 at 7:54 pm
A commenter at MadFriars.com had this news …
Signed for about $300,000 this summer, Edinson Rincon, a third baseman, appeared in the Dominican Summer League’s All-Star Game yesterday and soon will report to the Arizona Summer League. Just 16 when he signed, Rincon is ahead of the curve for a first-year professional.
July 24, 2007 at 7:57 pm
23: His hands weren’t tied, unless they’ve added a new MLB rule saying that no reliever can bat.
You’ve burned one long reliever, have a three run lead, have a slow runner on 1st with two outs and a fresh arm on the mound. Why pinch hit? The odds of Sledge doing anything constructive were pretty low.
If you want Blum to swing at three pitches and sit down, he could have had Cameron do the same.
Stupid.
July 24, 2007 at 7:57 pm
I don’t know who is coming in now, but could we get Bell instead of Linebrink tonight?
July 24, 2007 at 7:58 pm
He’ll use Bell for 1/3 of an inning and then bring in Linebrink for the 8th to face the same guys that beat him to a pulp yesterday.
Bud’s playing this game by the book, remember?
July 24, 2007 at 7:59 pm
I’m ok with Brocail giving up a series of singles. Stuff like that happens. At least he struck a guy out to limit the damage and didn’t walk anyone or give up a home run. So the things that are mostly under his control he did well at.
July 24, 2007 at 7:59 pm
OK, it’s Bell. Let’s have him pitch 1.1 innings.
July 24, 2007 at 7:59 pm
28: I have a feeling after last night, Bell pitches this out and then the 8th as well.
July 24, 2007 at 8:01 pm
Wow, our pen just cannot hold it together.
July 24, 2007 at 8:02 pm
So much for that plan.
July 24, 2007 at 8:03 pm
I don’t think the bullpen likes preserving wins. It’s too much stress for them.
July 24, 2007 at 8:04 pm
I think we would have been fine had Brocail not come in the game, what does Bud keep expecting from him?
July 24, 2007 at 8:05 pm
35: ya isnt brocail only supposed to pitch when we are losing by 3+?
July 24, 2007 at 8:06 pm
This team really needs to win this game now. After blowing this lead, losing the game and possibly CY for a DL stint could be fatal to this team’s immediate ability to stay in the race.
July 24, 2007 at 8:06 pm
35: Everyone else pitched yesterday and sucked, except for Bell who was being held back to pitch the eighth (like everyone wants him to). And then Bell came in and gave up the double to blow the lead anyway.
July 24, 2007 at 8:08 pm
How sweet would it be to still have Joakim Soria in the bullpen for the Pads..
Can Trevor pitch 2 innings tonight?
July 24, 2007 at 8:09 pm
You just get the sense right now that the baseball gods are not on our side. We could throw Nolan Ryan in his prime right now and he’d cough up the lead.
And then OG does his part to get the offense going. OY.
July 24, 2007 at 8:09 pm
Some good news … Dogs lose …
July 24, 2007 at 8:09 pm
Brocail is constant trouble. Cameron really should be getting his innings now. It’d be nice if Hensley is healthy enough to pitch. They said on the radio today that he will be going to the ‘pen in AAA. That way we can bring him up to pitch out of the bullpen. But as bad as these guys are pitching, we probably need to get another reliever by the deadline.
July 24, 2007 at 8:09 pm
Is there anything more predictable than a nobody pitcher shutting down the Padres?
There’s that loser Barrett, messing things up again.
July 24, 2007 at 8:10 pm
43: Yeah, f’ing Barrett! Get him off the team!
July 24, 2007 at 8:11 pm
43: In fairness to Barrett (the bad kind of fairness this time), he had already grounded into a double play and struck out today. So he was doing his part to help the team lose.
July 24, 2007 at 8:12 pm
NO DOUBLE PLAYS! I REPEAT, NO F’ING DOUBLE PLAYS! PLEASE PRESERVE THE INTEGRITY OF THE ELECTRONICS IN MY HOUSE AND NOT HIT INTO A DOUBLE PLAY!!!
July 24, 2007 at 8:12 pm
And now he’s doing his part to help them win. I think they were commenting on all of the negative press and him being a clubhouse cancer, etc.
July 24, 2007 at 8:15 pm
38: they werent his runners though… for what its worth
July 24, 2007 at 8:15 pm
Whoa, we finally caught a break!
July 24, 2007 at 8:16 pm
That’s how we roll.
July 24, 2007 at 8:17 pm
I’ll take a second 3 run HR from Cameron here.
July 24, 2007 at 8:18 pm
That’s just what we need from 23.
July 24, 2007 at 8:19 pm
I’ll take anything that produces a run from Cameron here.
July 24, 2007 at 8:19 pm
Caught a break? The Padres made that inning happen.
July 24, 2007 at 8:19 pm
I’ll even take that walk.
July 24, 2007 at 8:20 pm
Caught a break = the bunt was foul (Barrett didn’t slip until after the bunt was foul but at most that’s one run and an out), and Taveras didn’t quite make it to the ball.
July 24, 2007 at 8:21 pm
Sac fly! Woot Khalil! Getting in the run from third with one out!
July 24, 2007 at 8:21 pm
Greene with a productive out??? We are rollin right now.
July 24, 2007 at 8:22 pm
I was debating the value of Russell Branyan earlier in the day and have another stat to back up my belief that he is really not of much value this year. Branyan is 8 for his last 53 (.170) with 28 strikeouts and 3 solo homeruns (but his OPS is high–who cares ?) .
Meanwhile, Sledge is 3 for his last 20. Bench help is needed folks !
July 24, 2007 at 8:24 pm
Not KK’s best night … now let’s get 6 more outs!
July 24, 2007 at 8:25 pm
59: So is bullpen help, the question is will the front office actually make a move and get help on either side. Anyone know how Todd Walker is doing haha?
July 24, 2007 at 8:28 pm
Good to see Bud stick with Bell to pitch to the middle of the order that Linebrink had trouble with yesterday
July 24, 2007 at 8:30 pm
Whew. a scoreless 8th.
July 24, 2007 at 8:32 pm
Hip-Hip-HoRay for Heath Bell …
July 24, 2007 at 8:37 pm
Nice to see our offense pick up CY and give us a chance to win this game.
July 24, 2007 at 8:41 pm
The bullpen situation is a puzzling one, it’s hard to say if the relievers are just going through a bad period/slump or if their weaknesses are being exposed. Thank god for the Heath Bell pickup….remember when KT pulled the trigger on this deal he said “you can never have enough bullpen help”….how prophetic.
I am sure however, if KT can get a reliever for a fair price he would do it .
July 24, 2007 at 8:42 pm
The offense picked up Brocail, Bell and Black. They’re the ones that did the most to try to lose the game.
July 24, 2007 at 8:45 pm
Bell did a fine job with the middle of the order in the 8th… Bud managed this game pretty well. I dont think you can blame them. Brocail essentially gave up all 3 runs.
July 24, 2007 at 8:45 pm
Groundout. Death.
July 24, 2007 at 8:45 pm
A-Gon, great play. Taxes.
July 24, 2007 at 8:47 pm
Pop up. Hoffman.
Hoffman: 510 saves.
July 24, 2007 at 8:52 pm
69/70/71 … well said, Kevin, well said!
July 24, 2007 at 8:54 pm
Kyle Blanks with HR #20 tonight …
http://web.minorleaguebaseball.....a_bakafa_1
… STORM up 4-3 in top of 3rd …
July 24, 2007 at 10:19 pm
Good to see Hoffman is immune to whatever is killing our bullpen.
Re: “who cares how good Branyan’s OPS is”
I do. You should. The team does. OPS is a rough measure of how often Branyan is getting on base, and how many bases he’s accumulating when he gets hits. A .300 hitter who never walks and only hits singles is way less valuable than Branyan hitting .202, getting on base at .327, and slugging .437. Even if he strikes out in a third of his plate appearances.
Also, judging people on their last 20 plate appearances is not a good evaluation tool. Sledge is hitting .252/.340/.441 against righties on the season, which is excellent for a bench bat.
If you want to talk about people struggling, Cruz has OPS-ed .336 for the month of July, and he hasn’t hit lefties or righties very well this year. Taking a bigger sample size and looking at his whole career lets us know he’ll probably start hitting lefties better, making him a useful bench bat.
For all the love for Bocachica, he hit .238/.294/.349 in 63 AB while here.
Our bench is actually pretty balanced and solid now, with 2 decent right-handed bats (Cruz and the catcher not starting) and 2 decent lefty bats (Sledge and Branyan).
July 24, 2007 at 10:41 pm
Kevin going old school; I love it! Stay classy, Kevin.
July 24, 2007 at 11:13 pm
Linebrink got “demoted” from pitching the 8th and 9th innings (see Padres.com)
How about we just do away with the whole “specialist” thing. The only spot that should be set in stone is Hoff’s
July 24, 2007 at 11:35 pm
Lose 4 of 5 and are only 1 game back; Riunite on ice, that’s nice. Stupid DBacks started winning again. Hate them, more than the Dogs.
July 25, 2007 at 3:02 am
74: Well said. OPS is a far, far more useful stat in determining a player’s offensive value than batting average.
July 25, 2007 at 8:23 am
77 … that’s not right, jay … i don’t think it’s allowed for any padre fan to hate *anything* more than the dogs … you’ve been warned!
the word for this is anathema …
http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/anathema
… as in ‘the dogs are anathema to us’!
