IGD: Padres @ Diamondbacks (14 Jul 07)

Sat, Jul 14, 2007Ballhype: hype it up!
by Geoff Young
Game #89
time: 6:40 p.m. PT
tv: 4SD
sp: Chris Young (8-3, 2.00) vs Livan Hernandez (5-5, 4.54)
pre: Padres.com, SI.com

I can’t stand watching Livan Hernandez pitch, but I have tremendous admiration for the guy. He has successfully taken Muhammad Ali’s rope-a-dope strategy and applied it to baseball. The results may be “aesthetically challenged,” but in the end, Hernandez has assembled a nice little career.

Chris Young, meanwhile, gets to pitch in a real game again, which hopefully means no more cheap-ass home runs. Go Padres!

Completely agree with you on watching Livan Hernandez pitch. It’s infuriating that he and Doug Davis have peripherals and WHIPs as poor as they do, and yet have respectable ERAs.

We are again treated to Cruz slicing balls left-handed again today, as he’s starting in left and batting 7th. I guess he earned it with his homer yesterday.

1: I really wish Bradley would be in there. He’s been immensely valuable thus far.

why in the world would Bradley not start today? If he’s healthy he should be out there.

And, lately, so is Adrian :-( I’m confident his situation is not long-term … but it sure is *bad* …

    #4: Since 5/1/07:

    NOG: .207/.288/.287
    Kouz: .291/.348/.515

One of these guys bats #2, the other #8.

Don’t like to see Tony Clark going against CY. Tall people hit CY better than the shorter ones.

  11. Phantom Says:

10: It sure is. Livan Hernandez frightens me as a Padre fan, because he seems to really give us problems.

C’mon CY, K the big guy!

  12. Phantom Says:

And I mean to add that the D’Backs broadcast is even worse than usual. Some guy is in for Mark Grace and he’s an asbolute annoying douche.

One of his brilliant lines thus far: “I’ve just figured out the next innovation in baseball. They’ll move the coaches boxes since nobody stands in them!”

Thank you sir for that stunning bit of crack commentary.

  13. Ben B. Says:

10: Surely Bradley’s 0-8 is counteracted by his .400/.500/.400 line as a Padre (in a similar sample size)? In a Padres uniform, Bradley is one of the greatest hitters ever! Clearly the sand and blue has magical powers on Bradley.

OK, post #4 was whining … and post #6 was headed that direction … now, trying to be serious … what do you think Bud’s waiting for before he does shuffle the lineup? At some point if NOG keeps makin’ a lot of out, it seems like Bud will move him down. And at some point, if KK keeps hitting the ball, Bud will move him up.

It sure seems like 2 months of ABs is enough data to make decisions on …

What do you think a healthy Khalil ends up with in dingers this year?

Hmmmm…maybe we SHOULD have signed him to an extension. But I have to admit, I thought we should wait and see if he could stay healthy.

  37. Ben B. Says:

Fortunately, only hitting solo home runs is completely unsustainable. Eventually, someone will have to be on base, and the hitter will completely space out and forget he’s there and accidentally hit a home run.

By the way, whats the most aggravating about the D’backs broadcast is the freaking buzzer they use for denying correct answers to trivia questions.

  39. Phantom Says:

36: I think that if Khalil ends up relatively healthy all year (he’s already out-produced previous years), they’ll sign him to a 2 or 3-year extension. There’s still no viable option for replacing him within the organization and he’s still clearly very valuable for the team.

Adrian better hit like a 5-run HR to make up for that gaffe. We could still have a lead here.

  87. Ben B. Says:

Once again looking at the boxscore I am at a complete loss how to explain how the score is the way it is. The Padres have three homers, the Diamondbacks one; those are the only extra base hits in the game. The D-Backs have struck out 9 times, with no walks. The Padres have struck out 5 times, with 3 walks. It is inexplicable.

  88. Geoff Young Says:

I still like our chances. Tie game, battle of the bullpens:

Pitchers have a limited amount of control over the outcome of at bats. It would be nice to see more strikeouts, but they haven’t killed themselves with walks or homers. Sometimes the balls just fall in, sometimes the opposing hitters do a good job hitting good pitches. Until the bullpen starts striking out every batter they face, games like this will happen.
