This date in Padres history:
1972: For the second straight year, Clay Kirby goes the distance in beating the Reds on July 28. He wins this one, 3-1, with the only run coming on an eighth-inning Pete Rose homer. The previous season, Kirby and the Padres had prevailed, 4-2, with the only runs coming on a fourth-inning jack by Tony Perez.
1975: Dave Freisleben spins a five-hit shutout and drives in the deciding run as the Padres defeat the Astros in Houston, 2-0. Willie McCovey knocks his 13th homer of the season.
1976: Randy Jones and the Padres beat Joaquin Andujar and the Astros, 2-1, in 10 innings at the Astrodome. Both pitchers work the entire game, and all three runs are scored in the 10th.
1978: Gene Tenace homers twice, singles, walks, and drives in five runs to lead the Padres past John Denny and the Cardinals, 8-3, in San Diego. Oscar Gamble drives in the other three runs on a single and a double in four trips to the plate. Randy Jones scatters nine hits over nine innings for his eighth win.
1980: Tenace pounds a two-run walkoff homer in the bottom of the 11th to lead the Padres past the Cubs, 4-2. Rollie Fingers, in relief of John Curtis wins his ninth game of the season.
1984: In the second game of a doubleheader, Eric Show and Goose Gossage outpitch Nolan Ryan for a 1-0 victory. Gossage works the final 3 2/3 innings for his 19th save of the season.
1991: Fred McGriff drives in the game’s only runs and Andy Benes tosses eight scoreless innings, as the Padres beat the Mets, 2-0. Craig Lefferts works a perfect ninth for his 16th save.
2001: Phil Nevin homers twice and drives in five runs in support of Woody Williams en route to a 6-2 victory at Milwaukee. Nevin now has 29 home runs on the season. Bubba Trammell’s 17th homer of the year accounts for the Padres’ other run.

Hello, is there anybody out there. Clearly, the ump was squeezing Greg that first innings. Its beautiful here in SD, not surprised no one is around. Where is Geoff, at the Hall yet. Is he going to live blog the ceremony, because apparently, we will not see it here in SD.

At least we can actually say Barrett is helping cost us this game.

The press release announcing the release of Russell Branyan credited him with one home run this year, when he actually had 7. Weird. It got all his other stats right.

You know what would have been really nice in the ninth inning after Kouz got on base? If we had a left-handed bench bat with a ton of power who could offer us a realistic chance at a tie ball game with one swing. Or, maybe someone who could draw a walk to put the tying run on base. Probably that guy with a big bat would strike out, but obviously that’s not worse than what Blum did.

6: I dont get releasing Branyan… It makes no sense

Releasing Branyan is a poor choice.

It’s pretty sad state of affairs when fans are crying for the return of a guy who is hitting .197 and is hitting about a buck eighty since April. What is Branyan worth to other MLB clubs ? Well, I doubt if any other team will pick him up, especially when he has already played for nearly a quarter of them.

#7 Releasing Branyan makes NO sense….not one bit of sense ? If this is the case then there should be more than a few teams clamoring for his services. Remember our bet, the guy will not have 150 more PA’s in the majors.

I’m pretty sure someone will pick up Branyan. At least they’d be smart to. The guy is generally a bargain. He comes with a short term, cheap contract and he goes out and hits. He’d probably be best off in the AL where he can DH. His main problem, imo, is not his k’s or low average, it’s his defense (although it is probably better than advertised at 3b).
Anyway, I don’t really like the move. If the Padres made it because of his high k’s/low ball in play/low average offensive game .. I’d be pretty upset. If they made it more because of his defense, I think I’d be more understanding of the move. Still, I don’t think it’s a good one.
I don’t know….
