My latest idea on “All-Star Voting” … I’m actually not opposed to fan balloting … and I have an idea to keep it and make it better … rather than the current ballot with a player from each team at each position, during the off-season, have fan voting on “All-Star nominees” … the fans will select the 3-5 players at each position who will be on the All-Star ballot the next season. That way, we end up of starters who earned the starting spot based on (at least) a full season of performance … and who ever is hottest at the time of the balloting gets some edge in the process … but a guy who has come out of nowhere to have a hot month or 2 will not impact the voting process … but instead will, rightfully, only be eligible to be selected for the All-Star team, thus building a resume worthy of nomination the following off-season.

What’s Bud’s address? I’m gonna write him a letter!

247 … we have one other strength that’s easy to overlook and that’s depth … as much as we rail on B(l)um, I wonder where he ranks amongst the “25th men”?

I know the Padres don’t have any non-pitching All-Star’s (Adrian is far-and-away the closest), but it made me feel good about the Padres to fill in an All-Star ballot … there are not many names on that ballot worthy of a vote!

Barrett’s dominance against lefties has been very consistent over the past three years, while historically, Bard’s splits haven’t been anywhere near as extreme as they have so far this season.

I know our strength is pitching, but it is noteworthy that none of our position players are even close to leading OPS in their position. Yet we win.

Yet another reason to hate the Dodgers … their fans are voting for Nomar to start at 1B in the All-Star game … thus preventing the best player in MLB, Albert Pujols, from his rightful position. Hey, I like Prince Fielder as much as the next guy, but Pujols is *the* All-Star. It actually makes me proud that Adrian is not in the top 5. I think he should and will make the team … and may, in the future, have seasons that warrent him a starting nod ahead of Pujols, but that time is not now, and I think Padre fans know that are voting well. Eh, I know the truth is that they are not voting much … I’m doing my 25 at mlb.com just now … a few of those ballots will have Khalil punch’d on them … Rollins is the only guy on the list that’s clearly better, imo.

243: I’m guessing the 11 strikeouts would have been strikeouts in any other park as well. CY is a stud.

I’m so happy I decided to watch this game from start to finish when I woke up this morning without looking at the box score. What a game! So much drama and a spectacular result for the Padres.

I also really, really, really wanted that shutout though. (Very happy that that is my one complaint though - you know you’re on top when you’re complaining about the difference between a shutout huge win and just a huge win.)

Can’t wait for today’s matchup.

One more thing, great to see Josh get some rips, but I had not been aware of his splits: vs. LHP: 1059 OPS vs. RHP: 550 OPS Barrett may be able to mash lefties, but man I want Bard in against LHP.

Also, I would like to kind of rub this in the face of some espn writer who dismissed SD's pitching as all Petco. If we were playing against Wakefield elsewhere, maybe some of those warning track shots go out. Lowell's shot would have made it, but none of CY's outs were close to out.

Re 239, 240: when these guys can accel at multiple positions or sports, it just reminds you how good they are. Antonio Gates: gee, never played football, maybe I will be one of the best TE's in the game; or Rick, great pitcher, meltdown, turns out he can hit That was such a nice game. Granted that was probably our best pitching mismatch, but, Josh Beckett or no, I am fired up to see Jake fired up tomorrow. I just wish the DBacks would notice that based on their run differential they ought to be a .500 team or so. Please stop winning.
