IGD: Padres vs Red Sox (23 Jun 07)

Game #73
time: 7:05 p.m. PT
tv: 4SD
sp: Chris Young (6-3, 2.26) vs Tim Wakefield (7-7, 4.18)
pre: Padres.com, SI.com

Tough loss Friday night. If you’re looking for a bright spot, it’s that the Padres’ #3 starter was able to largely neutralize a very powerful offense. No, that doesn’t make me feel much better either, but it’s something.

Tim Wakefield is pitching for the Red Sox on Saturday, which means everybody’s favorite ex-Padre Doug Mirabelli is catching. Be sure to give him your regards.

Go Padres!

I wasn’t upset at all about last night’s loss. I thought the Padres held their own pretty well against the #1 team in the MLB. Too many guys left on base. It is what it is. Dice K has a rubber arm. I’m looking forward to the next two games. Tonight should be very interesting. If we can get one out of this series, I’ll be happy.
    M. Barrett has done a great job to impress his new team and fans. He truley looks happy to get away from Lou P. and all the bad press. I’m stoked he is on our team.
    GO PADRES!!!

4: I don’t know if I’ll be happy with just one Rick. I’m looking for us to take the series. I think that we’ve got the edge in the pitching matchups the next two nights and I’m hoping that we can get more than 1 run.
During last night’s first inning I’m sure that we all felt like this, but I turned to my neighbor and said, “We’re going to regret just getting one here.” I didn’t realize how much. That was a tough one to lose, but I was encouraged. We can hang with those guys.

I can be strong, but if Mirabelli has a good night against CY, it will be very, very hard to take. Watched some of the Giants/Yankees game today. Such an odd feeling; I hate both franchises, but actually found I hated the Giants more, unless a former Padre was involved. I found myself pulling for Klesko or Roberts to come through, but despising Vizquel or Feliz and especially Bonds immediately before and after. Kind of a schitzophrenic experience.

Bochy has been tossed 4 times this year, I learned. He got tossed on a bad call at first today. That cannot be an upgrade in work.

Looking forward to tonights game. Our hitters (oxymoron?) need to stop striking out so much. We have no patience at the plate, in my humble opinion.

Happy was the wrong term. Satisfied best describes it. Hell yes, I would prefer a sweep from the git-go. But, I think we looked good.

My experience with Ch 4 at Petco, I think their field mic’s are placed down the thrid base line which happens to be where the visitors block of seats are located(think section 116-118) giving it the appearance there are more visiting fans then there actually are.

#13: I was there last night and thought the San Diego fans held their own. Everytime a “Let’s Go Red Sox” chant broke out, it was “Padre’d” out.

There were plenty of Red Sox jerseys in the crowd, though. At the end of the game, when we were down to our last strike, the Red Sox fans stood up and I would have guessed 50% were standing.

I heard tickets were going for 4 times face value for seats around mine. That’s a nice little cushion for buying your playoff seats, but I couldn’t do that to my team. I have 1/2 season ticket and was there Friday and I’ll be there tomorrow.

Did anyone figure out why Bard was hitting righty against Wakefield? I even looked up Wakefield’s platoon splits before the game and he limited righties to 90 points less of OPS, so I reasoned that was the reason Bard was catching instead of Barrett. Sure worked for Bard, though.

235 – Interesting point, I just checked Bard’s splits and what not. At first I thought maybe he had some success against Wakefield. No hits in 2 AB’s, 1BB in his career.

Maybe they decided it was best to give him a night off with a Day game tomorrow and Josh Beckett on the hill?

    Yo, here’s a note I hadn’t heard anyone mention … from an article at mlb.com … in reference to Friday’s game, I believe …

Gonzalez fouled a ball off the top of his right foot in the first inning and played on it for the remaining eight frames. Gonzalez’s foot swelled up considerably after the game, Padres manager Bud Black said. The foot was wrapped heavily in ice after the game, and Gonzalez was walking with a slight limp.

And perhaps the plan is to hold on to Headley until OG is ready to return? From the same mlb.com article …

Black indicated that outfielder Brian Giles (bone bruise and right knee) is close to leaving for a Minor League rehabilitation assignment, likely with Class A Lake Elsinore. Lake Elsinore is home through Wednesday, which at that time Giles will likely rejoin the team in Los Angeles for the start of a three-game series against the Dodgers on June 29.

OT … Rick Ankiel might be one of the better athletes of all-time …

I agree Lynch…he is very easy to root for.

Great win. CY is a stud.

#234: Yes, Oxspring did go to Japan. Came back this year. We saw him in the Brewers’ camp this ST:

Re 239, 240: when these guys can accel at multiple positions or sports, it just reminds you how good they are. Antonio Gates: gee, never played football, maybe I will be one of the best TE’s in the game; or Rick, great pitcher, meltdown, turns out he can hit

That was such a nice game. Granted that was probably our best pitching mismatch, but, Josh Beckett or no, I am fired up to see Jake fired up tomorrow.

I just wish the DBacks would notice that based on their run differential they ought to be a .500 team or so. Please stop winning.

Also, I would like to kind of rub this in the face of some espn writer who dismissed SD’s pitching as all Petco. If we were playing against Wakefield elsewhere, maybe some of those warning track shots go out. Lowell’s shot would have made it, but none of CY’s outs were close to out.

One more thing, great to see Josh get some rips, but I had not been aware of his splits:

    vs. LHP: 1059 OPS
    vs. RHP: 550 OPS

Barrett may be able to mash lefties, but man I want Bard in against LHP.

243: I’m guessing the 11 strikeouts would have been strikeouts in any other park as well. ;) CY is a stud.

I’m so happy I decided to watch this game from start to finish when I woke up this morning without looking at the box score. What a game! So much drama and a spectacular result for the Padres.

I also really, really, really wanted that shutout though. (Very happy that that is my one complaint though – you know you’re on top when you’re complaining about the difference between a shutout huge win and just a huge win.)

    Can’t wait for today’s matchup.

Yet another reason to hate the Dodgers … their fans are voting for Nomar to start at 1B in the All-Star game … thus preventing the best player in MLB, Albert Pujols, from his rightful position. Hey, I like Prince Fielder as much as the next guy, but Pujols is *the* All-Star. It actually makes me proud that Adrian is not in the top 5. I think he should and will make the team … and may, in the future, have seasons that warrent him a starting nod ahead of Pujols, but that time is not now, and I think Padre fans know that are voting well. Eh, I know the truth is that they are not voting much … I’m doing my 25 at mlb.com just now … a few of those ballots will have Khalil punch’d on them … Rollins is the only guy on the list that’s clearly better, imo.

I know our strength is pitching, but it is noteworthy that none of our position players are even close to leading OPS in their position. Yet we win.

#244: We touched on this earlier:

    http://ducksnorts.com/blog/2007/06/grin-and-barrett.html

Barrett’s dominance against lefties has been very consistent over the past three years, while historically, Bard’s splits haven’t been anywhere near as extreme as they have so far this season.

#246: J.J. Hardy at shortstop. Also, I won’t be voting for Pujols anytime soon, but that’s just me.

247 … we have one other strength that’s easy to overlook and that’s depth … as much as we rail on B(l)um, I wonder where he ranks amongst the “25th men”?

I know the Padres don’t have any non-pitching All-Star’s (Adrian is far-and-away the closest), but it made me feel good about the Padres to fill in an All-Star ballot … there are not many names on that ballot worthy of a vote!

My latest idea on “All-Star Voting” … I’m actually not opposed to fan balloting … and I have an idea to keep it and make it better … rather than the current ballot with a player from each team at each position, during the off-season, have fan voting on “All-Star nominees” … the fans will select the 3-5 players at each position who will be on the All-Star ballot the next season. That way, we end up of starters who earned the starting spot based on (at least) a full season of performance … and who ever is hottest at the time of the balloting gets some edge in the process … but a guy who has come out of nowhere to have a hot month or 2 will not impact the voting process … but instead will, rightfully, only be eligible to be selected for the All-Star team, thus building a resume worthy of nomination the following off-season.

    What’s Bud’s address? I’m gonna write him a letter!
