IGD: Padres vs Red Sox (23 Jun 07)
Sat, Jun 23, 2007by Geoff Young
| time: | 7:05 p.m. PT |
| tv: | 4SD |
| sp: | Chris Young (6-3, 2.26) vs Tim Wakefield (7-7, 4.18) |
| pre: | Padres.com, SI.com |
Tough loss Friday night. If you’re looking for a bright spot, it’s that the Padres’ #3 starter was able to largely neutralize a very powerful offense. No, that doesn’t make me feel much better either, but it’s something.
Tim Wakefield is pitching for the Red Sox on Saturday, which means everybody’s favorite ex-Padre Doug Mirabelli is catching. Be sure to give him your regards.
Go Padres!

I posted some interesting links here …

… #1 of which is a reminder that Matt Latos makes his pro debut in about 5 mins (for Eugene @ Spokane) … you can listen to the radio online (link in comment at link above).

Nice story about Canham in MILB.com.

I wasn’t upset at all about last night’s loss. I thought the Padres held their own pretty well against the #1 team in the MLB. Too many guys left on base. It is what it is. Dice K has a rubber arm. I’m looking forward to the next two games. Tonight should be very interesting. If we can get one out of this series, I’ll be happy.
M. Barrett has done a great job to impress his new team and fans. He truley looks happy to get away from Lou P. and all the bad press. I’m stoked he is on our team.
GO PADRES!!!
June 23, 2007 at 6:40 pm
Thanks for the links Lynch! Go Mat!
June 23, 2007 at 6:40 pm
A-Gone playing hurt isn’t good.
June 23, 2007 at 6:42 pm
1 … Eugene radio announcer says that Emeralds leadoff hitter Danny Payne, who just lead off the game with his 10th walk of the young season (game 4), just extended his consecutive games-reaching-base streak to *82* games … YOW!
June 23, 2007 at 6:42 pm
4: I don’t know if I’ll be happy with just one Rick. I’m looking for us to take the series. I think that we’ve got the edge in the pitching matchups the next two nights and I’m hoping that we can get more than 1 run.
During last night’s first inning I’m sure that we all felt like this, but I turned to my neighbor and said, “We’re going to regret just getting one here.” I didn’t realize how much. That was a tough one to lose, but I was encouraged. We can hang with those guys.
June 23, 2007 at 6:43 pm
I can be strong, but if Mirabelli has a good night against CY, it will be very, very hard to take. Watched some of the Giants/Yankees game today. Such an odd feeling; I hate both franchises, but actually found I hated the Giants more, unless a former Padre was involved. I found myself pulling for Klesko or Roberts to come through, but despising Vizquel or Feliz and especially Bonds immediately before and after. Kind of a schitzophrenic experience.
Bochy has been tossed 4 times this year, I learned. He got tossed on a bad call at first today. That cannot be an upgrade in work.
June 23, 2007 at 6:44 pm
Re: #3- LM, was there any doubt that OC would repeat?
Looking forward to tonights game. Our hitters (oxymoron?) need to stop striking out so much. We have no patience at the plate, in my humble opinion.
Go Padres!

Also at milb.com is a pic and write-up of Ramos’ 3-hitter last night …

#8: Paul, I don’t feel like we got ‘beat’ last night. We simply lost. That game could have gone either way. Fun game to watch. I was on the edge of my seat the whole time.
Happy was the wrong term. Satisfied best describes it. Hell yes, I would prefer a sweep from the git-go. But, I think we looked good.
June 23, 2007 at 6:50 pm
For anyone who was at the game last night, did it feel like a home game? Were the Red Sox fans as loud as they seemed on TV. I had heard that a lot of season ticket holders sold their tickets for this game. What do you all think? Or do we care?
June 23, 2007 at 6:50 pm
Dogs down 4-3 in Tampa in top of 8th …

June 23, 2007 at 6:54 pm
SD, sorry I didn’t get back to you. I got tied up with work.
June 23, 2007 at 6:54 pm
Matt Latos is on the bump … first pitch was called Strike 1 … then Strike 2 … then a 93 mph fastball fouled back … fly out …
It’s begun …
June 23, 2007 at 6:56 pm
re: 15, TD, no worries. Not a problem.
June 23, 2007 at 7:02 pm
My experience with Ch 4 at Petco, I think their field mic’s are placed down the thrid base line which happens to be where the visitors block of seats are located(think section 116-118) giving it the appearance there are more visiting fans then there actually are.
Of course, TONS of chowda heads around downtown these past couple of days.
June 23, 2007 at 7:04 pm
16 … Latos with a rough 1st inning … 1 run on 2 hits …
http://web.minorleaguebaseball.....x_spoasx_1
… time to temper expectations
June 23, 2007 at 7:04 pm
A true die hard Padre/Charger fan is used to the fair weather fan and the transplants. We all know who we are as San Diegans.
June 23, 2007 at 7:08 pm
Coco Crisp is gonna make me want to take drugs watching his setup at the plate.
June 23, 2007 at 7:09 pm
Toasted Crisp!
June 23, 2007 at 7:10 pm
C. Crisp struck out swinging
… and we’re underway @ Petco … nice start … ‘cept the count ran to 3-2 …
June 23, 2007 at 7:10 pm
#13: I was there last night and thought the San Diego fans held their own. Everytime a “Let’s Go Red Sox” chant broke out, it was “Padre’d” out.
There were plenty of Red Sox jerseys in the crowd, though. At the end of the game, when we were down to our last strike, the Red Sox fans stood up and I would have guessed 50% were standing.
I heard tickets were going for 4 times face value for seats around mine. That’s a nice little cushion for buying your playoff seats, but I couldn’t do that to my team. I have 1/2 season ticket and was there Friday and I’ll be there tomorrow.
June 23, 2007 at 7:11 pm
Mud’s right: Michael Barrett does look like Adam Eaton.
June 23, 2007 at 7:12 pm
Fanned Ortiz!! Yeah, in his face!
June 23, 2007 at 7:15 pm
19 … Latos strikes out the side in bottom of 2nd (#7/#8/#9) …
June 23, 2007 at 7:15 pm
Sit ‘em down and give ‘em punch. CY is on his game. Let’s get these makers of farts!
June 23, 2007 at 7:16 pm
After top of 1st …
Pitches-strikes - C Young 17-9.
Ground balls-fly balls - C Young 0-1.
Batters faced - C Young 4.
… not as bad as I’d fear’d after 1st 2 hitters …
June 23, 2007 at 7:19 pm
67% humidity, everything is gonna drop tonight. The air is too dense.
June 23, 2007 at 7:19 pm
7 … check that … Payne didn’t get his 10th walk … he got a hit … and just got 2nd hit of the game … OK, this is probably too much detail for a Short-Season-A-ball game …
June 23, 2007 at 7:19 pm
I thought Manny Ramirez couldn’t play defense. That was a nice sliding catch.
June 23, 2007 at 7:20 pm
#31: Define “too much detail.”
June 23, 2007 at 7:21 pm
GY, I figured you would be at all three of these games. Always nice to have you around. LOL.
June 23, 2007 at 7:21 pm
Dogs lose …
June 23, 2007 at 7:21 pm
4x….I have left field lower box seats, the guy(from Boston via charter plane for Sox fans) paid $200 each for $27 face value tickets so he could be as close to Manny as possible
June 23, 2007 at 7:24 pm
CY is pitching like he wants some revenge. Grrrr. Smokin’ fast balls with movement.
June 23, 2007 at 7:25 pm
AWESOME - Mirabelli getting booed, roundly!
June 23, 2007 at 7:25 pm
Ump made the right call on that one!
June 23, 2007 at 7:25 pm
Mirabelli booed roundly. Calls time but it isn’t granted. Strike one from CY. You can’t write this stuff.
June 23, 2007 at 7:26 pm
BEST STRIKEOUT EVER IN THE HISTORY OF THE PADRES!!!!
June 23, 2007 at 7:26 pm
Three-pitch strikeout. Heh.
June 23, 2007 at 7:26 pm
#40: Geoff, you can write this stuff right into the next book.
June 23, 2007 at 7:27 pm
Mirabelli’s K takes a bit of the sting out of last night. Like Matty said, put it on the highlight reel.
June 23, 2007 at 7:27 pm
After top of 2nd …
Pitches-strikes - T Wakefield 10-7; C Young 29-19.
Ground balls-fly balls - T Wakefield 1-1; C Young 0-2.
Batters faced - T Wakefield 3; C Young 7.
… s’pose they’ll have that “highlight” on padres.mlb.com?
June 23, 2007 at 7:28 pm
Where did that come from?
June 23, 2007 at 7:28 pm
BEST BUNT FOR A BASE HIT IN THE HISTORY OF THE PADRES!!!!
June 23, 2007 at 7:28 pm
Gotta love that K, guys…I’m just grinning ear to ear here. Then Cammy follows up with a bunt. Sweet.
June 23, 2007 at 7:29 pm
Bard batting right handed against Wakefield.
June 23, 2007 at 7:29 pm
47 … I vote for Steve for “most psych’d up Padre fan of the game” award … keep it up, Steve!!!
June 23, 2007 at 7:31 pm
Cameron swipes second on a pitchout. Heh.
June 23, 2007 at 7:31 pm
OT … I always like it when a clean-up hitter cleans up …
http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/boxscore?gid=270623112
June 23, 2007 at 7:31 pm
…and Cammy must be fired up. Stolen base on the pitch out.
June 23, 2007 at 7:31 pm
Bard doubles home Cammy! Nice.
June 23, 2007 at 7:32 pm
There we go!!!
June 23, 2007 at 7:32 pm
SHAKESPEARE!!!!!
June 23, 2007 at 7:32 pm
#50: I’d be right there except my has me putting away laundry.
OK, I’ll buy that for a dollar!
June 23, 2007 at 7:32 pm
Who needs to catch a knuckle ball when you can pound it for a double?
June 23, 2007 at 7:32 pm
Beavers win … 11-4 …
Go Beavs!
June 23, 2007 at 7:32 pm
50… BEST PADRES BLOG COMPLIMENTARY POST REGARDING A FAN WHO HAS CLEARLY LOST IT UNDER ALL THE PRESSURE FROM BEING A PADRES FAN IN BOSTON THIS WEEKEND *EVER*
Okay I’ll stop.
June 23, 2007 at 7:33 pm
#57: I’m too excited to type!
June 23, 2007 at 7:33 pm
I love that Mirabelli got beat on a pitch out and then had the best seat in the house for that double by the guy he got traded for… if he K’s against Meredith later the circle will be complete.
June 23, 2007 at 7:34 pm
I’m already sick of watching runners stranded at third base with less then 2 outs….too many this series
June 23, 2007 at 7:37 pm
Some good swings against Wakefield that inning. Kouz laid off some tough knucklers before putting one to the warning track in center.
June 23, 2007 at 7:37 pm
Latos only goes 2.1 IP … he didn’t get very far into the game … I’m pretty sure the “pitch limit” was by design … he’s already got a bunch of innings on his (valuable) arm this year …
June 23, 2007 at 7:39 pm
We really need to shut the fart makers down.
June 23, 2007 at 7:40 pm
Serious question: Do the Padres batters have anyone that can give them practice knuckle ball pitches before facing Wakefield?
June 23, 2007 at 7:40 pm
CY is looking outstanding tonight.
June 23, 2007 at 7:40 pm
That was a sweet pitch.
June 23, 2007 at 7:41 pm
CY has a nice breaking ball working tonight.
June 23, 2007 at 7:42 pm
#67: Good question. Anybody know?
June 23, 2007 at 7:42 pm
CY seems like he is just getting better and better since he got to San Diego…going to be fun to watch he and Peavy for the next 3-4 years at a min
June 23, 2007 at 7:42 pm
CY is pumped up. The third strike to Mirabelli was 93 mph out of the hand, I think that’s the fastest I’ve seen from him all year.
June 23, 2007 at 7:42 pm
#67: I’d rather doubt it. A knuckleballer is a bastard breed who was raised by hamsters in a bear’s den.
June 23, 2007 at 7:43 pm
RE: 67. I can’t speak for everyone, but I’ve caught a knuckleballer and batted against one. Seeing more of them never helped me as a hitter. I just went up and tried to swing hard on the hopes that if one stayed straight I would whack it.
June 23, 2007 at 7:43 pm
Teams typically don’t take knuckleball BP(or at least I know the Rangers don’t) but there is usually a high school coach or retired pitcher somewhere in the area that throws one if they want
June 23, 2007 at 7:43 pm
O’s up 3-0 on D-backs in top of 4th …
http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/boxscore?gid=270623129
June 23, 2007 at 7:44 pm
74: Maybe they get thrown wiffle balls before the game?
June 23, 2007 at 7:44 pm
Sorry, that didn’t really answer the question. I don’t believe we have anyone on the team or coaching staff that throws a good knuckler.
June 23, 2007 at 7:48 pm
67 - I don’t know, but it would not surprise me if someone on the team can throw a knuckler. I have to think that the bullpen guys or somebody learned to throw one while growing up…but I doubt they would throw it in actual BP.
June 23, 2007 at 7:49 pm
#79: When I was in HS, the knuckler was a goof pitch. I came up with a three fingered curve that would spin backwards and if the hitter made contact, it would pop straight up or foul. Never tried the knuckler.
June 23, 2007 at 7:50 pm
Good trivia Q - name the only two Red Sox to have hit 50+ home runs.
June 23, 2007 at 7:50 pm
Thru 3 full …
Pitches-strikes - T Wakefield 33-24; C Young 41-28.
Ground balls-fly balls - T Wakefield 2-5; C Young 0-3.
Batters faced - T Wakefield 11; C Young 10.
June 23, 2007 at 7:51 pm
82 … Babe Ruth? … oh, you mean while playing for the Red Sox?
June 23, 2007 at 7:52 pm
Who’s your Popi now?!
June 23, 2007 at 7:53 pm
82 … that is a nice trivia question … don’t look here if you don’t want to know the answer … http://www.baseball-reference......_bat.shtml …
June 23, 2007 at 7:53 pm
Nice sequence to Ortiz, but it looks like CY might have gotten a little help on the 1-1 pitch.
June 23, 2007 at 7:54 pm
#84: Nice one…
June 23, 2007 at 7:55 pm
Fan costs Adrian an out there. Way to go.
June 23, 2007 at 7:56 pm
86 - I liked that question a lot. One is fairly obvious, and I had no clue on the other guy.
June 23, 2007 at 7:56 pm
82 … that reminds me of my favorite trivia question … before Barry won back-to-back MVP’s there were 9 players in MLB history with back-to-back MVP’s … one at each position (ie. 3 OF’ers) … name ‘em? (hint: one of them is part of answer to 82)
June 23, 2007 at 7:57 pm
91 - that is a great one. Off to baseball-reference to figure it out…
June 23, 2007 at 7:58 pm
Spring Training favority Tim Brown with HR #11 for San Antonio tonight …
http://web.minorleaguebaseball.....x_sanaax_1
… plus decent start for Geer.
June 23, 2007 at 7:59 pm
82: Ortiz and Foxx?
June 23, 2007 at 8:00 pm
90. Tells how much I pay attention to the AL… I knew the old timer, not the other.
June 23, 2007 at 8:00 pm
94 - yup.
Wakefield just bounced a knuckler. Reminds me of one of Bob Uecker’s better quips:
“How do you catch a knuckleball? Wait until it stops rolling, then go pick it up.”
June 23, 2007 at 8:01 pm
The game @ Spokane is moving very slowly … the book just closed on Matt Latos as a runner he let on just scored … 2 ERs in 2.1 IP …
June 23, 2007 at 8:03 pm
96: My favorite (and maybe EVERYONE’s already heard it) is:
“For a knuckleballer, a pitch count of 150 is not a problem. Unless it’s the first inning.”
June 23, 2007 at 8:04 pm
#98: I just fell out of my chair!
June 23, 2007 at 8:04 pm
Ayala doing well for the STORM thru 4 …
http://web.minorleaguebaseball.....a_lesafa_1
June 23, 2007 at 8:04 pm
Thru 4 …
Pitches-strikes - T Wakefield 43-31; C Young 57-40.
Ground balls-fly balls - T Wakefield 4-5; C Young 0-5.
Batters faced - T Wakefield 14; C Young 13.
June 23, 2007 at 8:08 pm
I hope CY can get out of this one. Glad we dumped Doug M. when we did.
June 23, 2007 at 8:09 pm
Mirabelli has struck out twice on six pitches.
June 23, 2007 at 8:09 pm
Hell yah he went!
June 23, 2007 at 8:10 pm
It’s amazing how much worse the bottom of their lineup looks with Varitek sitting and no DH
